    Small correction: There is no "Cult of The Dragon Below". From Exploring Eberron: "The title “Cult of the Dragon Below” is a blanket term used to describe any sect that serves a malevolent power or has bizarre beliefs that defy rational thought. But no member of such an organization would call themselves a “cultist of the Dragon Below.”
    The "Inner Sun" cult is just ONE of the "Cults of The Dragon Below", not THE Cult.

    The Underdark existed in Greyhawk before the Forgotten Realms was published -- 1978 module D3: Vault of the Drow. The World of Greyhawk has just as extensive of an underdark as the Forgotten Realms.

      I was surprised how much Oerth was used in the 3rd Edition core books. It makes sense when you think about it, the purchase of D&D from TSR which had used Oerth instead of Mystara when 2nd Edition was published.
      I just hope the teases from Ray Wininger about a new campaign setting is the new default for 6th Edition/ 5.5e.

      A difference I'd add in older editions. Oerth is a hollow world with an under dark like cave system in between. Toril's under dark eventually led to Abeir with the Faerzress radiation being a side effect.
      I think both concepts were eventually ditched or altered in Cannon, but I still liked them.

    My favourite description ever of Khyber is: What if the Underdark merged with the Abyss and the Far Realm, and was as easy to step in as the Feywild?
    Everything terrible is a possible to find there, as well as great wealth and opportunity. Find a stable connection between two tunnels, and House Orien might just try make a railway through there, explore the Realm Below of the Mror Holds and find both the treasures of Ancient Dwarves and the struggle of 'The War Below' - an active conflict taking place indeed, in Khyber. The question is, will you stay around long enough for a good find to turn into sour reality?

    Khyber is a great tool for DM’s to introduce other settings; a table that wants to integrate Curse of Strahd could easily find a path into Barovia via the depths of Khyber, or easily any of the other domains of dread

    Both the Underdark and Khyber are amazing settings, and I'm glad both the Forgotten Realms and Eberron were able to create distinct and interesting versions of the same basic idea: the terror below our feet.
    I'm also interested by Baker's word-choice. The Abyss doesn't exist in the 13 planes of Eberron. So, perhaps Khyber is a means of leaving Eberronspace and entering the Great Wheel and the larger DnD multiverse.

    How would YOU adapta Out of the Abyss into Eberron?
    Drows are different; Duergar are different; Khyber is different; even the demons and the Abyss are diferrent!
    This is a really coll challenge. I love this kind of challenges as a GM

    • @InquisitorThomas
      @InquisitorThomas Před 2 lety +3

      I haven’t played out of the Abyss so I can’t adapt the beat by beat because I simply don’t know how the adventure goes but I can give you some rough equivalents.
      One Drow Culture called the Umbragen lives in Kyber and they’re the closest equivalent to the standard Drow.
      Demon Lords and Arch Devils can be incorporated into Eberron in multiple ways: Demon Princes can be very powerful native fiends that rule over their own Demiplane while not quite being Overlords, they can be incredibly powerful unique fiends from one of the 13 planes like Orcus being from Mabar, or you can use the Demon Prince Stat blocks as a rough approximate for an Overlord/Dalkyr that doesn’t have an existing 5e Statblock or you just made up (Orcus as the Gatekeeper, Jubilex as Kyrzin, etc.)
      Duergar are slightly tricky since technically they’ve been pretty much solely mentioned in Lore as living in Sarlona, however there’s a couple things you can do with Duergar: The Sarlonan Duergar either branched off from a Duergar society that resides in a Demiplane in Kyber who do practice things like Slavery, maybe they’re the remnants of the Ancient pre-Mror civilization that managed to fend off the Dalkyr, maybe they’re intelligent/sane Derro, maybe they’re time traveling descendants of the One Mror clan that went missing 400 years ago.

    • @agentchaos9332
      @agentchaos9332 Před 2 lety +1

      That really depends, on how much you want to keep the Demon lords as written, or alter them to fit the setting, or create completely new characters. I could Feasibly see Demigorgon, or Orcus, being straight up overlords in their own right, they have the power to be comparable to them...the rest of the Demon lords aren't that strong, Lore-wise and Stat-wise. Khyber itself meanwhile, the only way you could tie that to the abyss is saying Khyber is an aspect, or different name for Tharizdun. Or perhaps Khyber in its slumber has reached into the abyss and has summoned Demon lords to free it, in exchange for promises of power. However the big 3 Demon lords have so much specific lore, and origin stories to them that making them fit in ebberon cosmology would require some tweaking. It would be easier to throw Zuggutmoy, Jubilex or Fraz-urb-lur into the story, if you want to portray them as children of Khyber, lore-wise. Again keeping in mind that those three aren't strong enough to be Overlords

    • @shinon748
      @shinon748 Před rokem +1

      Drow and still be Drow just read up on the Umbragen tribe of Drow. The demon lords would all be Overlords trapped in Khyber. Make the Umbragen Drow being manipulated by a secretive group of Rakshasa that are part of the Lords of Dust working to free the demon lords. You can replace Gauntlegrym with one of the many Dwarven strongholds in the Mror Holds. Instead of a Bruenor the Dwarf King replace him with a high ranking House Kundarak noble. This is to be a story where one of the Draconic Prophecies has been fulfilled and the demon Overlords are about to be free and this takes place on the short gap between the Prophecy being fulfilled and the Lords of Dust being able to break the prisons open. Replace the final demonlord v demonlord a fight of one Demonlord that was freed with an avatar of the Silver Flame. And the aftermath of this fight is the Silver Flame resealing the demonic Overlords. The Maze Engine McGuffin is the key to release the Overlords and the Rakshasa are pushing the Umbragen to get it for them by convincing the Umbragen that it could be a tool they could use in their endless war against the Daelkyr.

      @@gcampoverde I actually am in the midst of running a game adapted from Call of the Netherdeep. Made the Apotheon into a championship of the orcs during the war against the Daelkyr who got power from Dragons instead of Gods, set the first part of it in the Shadow Marches and replaced the Krynn soldiers with some House Tharashk employees former soldiers, so on and so forth. Actually working out pretty well so far.

There are a couple Eberron lore issus, and way things are phrased that might be misleading to people who don't know the lore well might be confused by, but still a good starting point for people brand new to the concept. Once I get around to doing my own video on Khyber - I know I won't be able to keep it so concise, and it will end up being 40 minutes or an hour long.

    Great video. While I understand why newcomers to Eberron would use the Underdark as a conceptual shorthand, but it really sells Khyber short. I have always thought that the key to understanding Khyber is that it is countless fractured nightmares of an imprisoned God-Dragon, all built from her desire that she escapes her imprisonment and achieve dominion over creation itself. I think this video does a great job bridging that gap for those that don't have experience with Eberron.

      Up to you, Eberron tends to nails such things down less than other settings because of KB's design philosophy.
      cool idea though.
      My understanding is that there ARE more conventional upper strata and entrances to Khyber that are just like the Underdark (making adaptations easy), but they butt up against the crazy demiplanes and nothing is guaranteed.
