Hiya Andrew, just found this flicking through youtube. I had the pleasure of working with Rowen twice on his UK tours. This was originally in his show in 1984 long before IEM. Howard Goodhall his Musical Director operated a reel to reel revox machine behind and up above on a platform. Once the main couple of small stings played as individual tracks the main track would play and Rowen would keep up as its so well rehearsed. Later on during his MR Bean tour we had him at our theatre for a 2 week period. 1st week a production week where there was a rough idea of a basic show and they would rehearse for about 8 - 10 hours a day. 2 week was a split week with open production shows, with rehearsals and note calls the next day to see what the audience reacted to well and would be changed, cut or stayed the same. A lovely guy to work with and very interesting to see the planing phase of his mind. In the 84 tour he used to even drive the 40ft tour truck from venue to venue until he got to famous and the insurance was too much. Will try and find the pictures and share to your social media.
Andrew!
I did receive your email also!
Thank you so much for sharing these insights.
As you would know in your role. Far beyond talent and just 'funny guy' I would picture Rowan as methodical, thoroughly researched and diligent beyond belief.
Thanks again. Please share those pics!
You, my good sir, just made my day. I've been watching this sketch and the one about the first date with my family so many times over the past decade. This reaction just popped in my feed for some reason. Reading your comment and getting some insight about how it was pulled off just amazes me. Thank you very much
Rowan*
@@leeschofield488 Not to mention *Goodall :-)
@@PlatypusPerspective I wouldn't know, never heard of the person so no idea how to spell it.
He also plays the keyboard in the 2012 Olympics opening ceremoni.
YES!
No in ear he created and practiced this sketch until it was as clean as you just watched.
Dude, I’m 43, I grew up in the UK watching this stuff. There’s no “in ear” anything going on here. What you have is good old fashion rehearsing and copying. Old school 80/90’s sand up. R.A. was and always will be a genius.
What i learned from this Video:
- Rowan Atkinson is a Legend.
- I have no clue about drumming
It’s quite obvious that Rowan Atkinson is a perfectionist. This was a very well rehearsed and orchestrated performance, absolutely amazing.
No in ear stuff (this is a decade or two before that), just a professional being very good at his job.
I believe this, too. Practice it enough, you get skilled at something. He could have been practicing for months just for this bit 😆 And would an ear piece really be an advantage? If it's prerecorded sound, muscle memory should be sufficient with practice.
The whole thing was blocked out and thoroughly rehearsed by Rowan Atkinson. In ears were a rarity back then.
Yeah, I'd betcha. Remember thinking a lot about this back then and I don't have the answer, but it is at least partially rehearsed and performed to the track - most of which seems sensible, especially considering that there is a good bit of leeway - I mean, the video here is heavily desynced and I enjoyed myself somehow. Getting it right after diligent practice is definitely something people and especially actors do; just consider intricate one-takes with cues being yelled in a very specific rhythm... many actors pretty much need to be musicians and develop a good feel for consistency and pace. Even aligning themselves perfectly to the camera (see Brad Pitt and the underwater shot in Snatch's BTS footage) is something they have to deal with while a bunch of stuff is happening around them - and then you look at the physicality required, getting ripped, running for scenes (especially old men, jeez), having to sweat and pant and scream and what-have-you...
This is actually surprisingly tame, all things considered, despite never failing to impress. No way he doesn't play drums in his spare time either, I bet he is a beast with that kick technique, lol. Relatable sweet-spot quadruple kick one-foot jitter action too.
Yeah, it's just rehearsing. Any good actor rehearses their part for months before a performance. Same with any artist. In ears did exist back then but where really expensive and mostly for artists and bands that toured a lot.
I'd be very surprised if it was in ear. Most actors can recreate almost the same performance night after night. Having worked on many shows, it's surprising how the run time can be eerily consistent
My brother is a percussionist and did this skit for some local comedy shows and talent shows. He just memorized the timing of the audio after listening to it and rehearsing over and over again. Classic sketch.
I have always thought it was pre-recorded and Atkinson is such a master of physical comedy that this is timed to a pre-recorded tape it has to be
I was in a bar once & Mr. Bean was on the big-screen TV with the sound turned off. Didn't seem to make any difference ,it was still just as hilarious.
I was once on a flight, a long time ago, where you had to pay £2 for earphones to watch the in-flight videos. Two of the videos were Mr. Bean, so the people who had paid felt robbed!
Rowan Atkinson is the master of physical comedy in my books! Just one expression can make one crack up.
that's the beauty in his performances
there is a invisible kit there, that's my guess
Really love this skit. Also love the king with a physical defect.
Ah that's a classic Glen
Would be really interesting to see him play an actual drum kit. The mime is too accurate to be completely imaginary.
I show this in my general music classes (middle school)... the kids are amazed....
I bet!
I think this skit is genius comedy - you begin to picture what the kit looks like based on what he's hitting / where it sits and what it sounds like. He gives you the opportunity to build something in your own mind and all he's doing it playing around on an empty stage with a backing track.
Hi Andrew..nice one..had to do a double-take when i saw the headline..thought i was familiar with most of Rowan's stuff and have seen him live but don't remember seeing this before(im sure i would've remembered).. couldn't see any in-ear stuff....comedy and drumming are connected...it's all about timing! :)
he has been known to actually play most instruments at one time or another. he is skilled in music in general more than likely played during his schooling musical arts type thing
Been a fan since the , 90s... I don't recall this. Excellent!!
Glad you caught it now!
My God! I love Rowan Atkinson! My dad actually once filled up his Aston Martin at a petrol station
Oh awesome Kieran!
I knew Rowan was/is a car fanatic
Thanks for doing this. I had no ideas this existed.
It was very impressive and funny as all get out. When he hit the cat I Lost IT!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Crazy clever guy
rowan fully memorized the piece... its how he did all of his comedies
this is a great example why air drumming is such a good way to learn drums. If you throw your arms in the right direction to music you'd be surprised how well you actually sound behind a real kit. my first drum kit was hi hat (pillow 1) and floor tom ( pillow 2), my snare (mattress) and kick drum (good old carpeted floor). Everything else I just imagined was there. Didn't touch a real kit till about a year into being a drummer. First time I did it went pretty well IMHO.
Luke Holland said exactly the same. He practices with no drums all the time and he's incredible.
We all know how powerful visualization is. Perhaps it employs a bit of that into the imagination?
I remember watching a German? drummer that Chimaira hired sometime around 2004-2005 and he said he'd been rehearsing all their songs in his mind for months. Then he got on the kit and just fucking killed it.
Impressive.
Totally know what you mean, I just used my hands, stomach and thighs. 😄
Mr. BEAN is hilarious. I remember seeing this many years ago. It's great.
I really enjoyed your reaction. Yes, this piece was brilliant and although I'm not a drummer, I have enough music sensibility that I too thought this was, as the Brits would say, Brilliant! I just did a quick search on the question "Does Rowan Atkinson play drums?" I can't say whether the on-line article is accurate or not, but on the web page "music instruments air dot calm"
(put it all together and spell the last word correctly and you get the idea 😉) they said...
"The answer is yes! Rowan Atkinson has been playing drums since the early 80s and he even has a drum set at his home in Oxfordshire. He has performed with some of the world’s top musicians, including Eric Clapton and Phil Collins. He is also an accomplished jazz drummer and often plays with his own jazz band."
I've looked for any such videos on CZcams and cannot find them. It could be that Mr. Atkinson feels that if such videos were to surface publicly that they would steal away from the humor of his Mr. Bean character playing drums as well as other musical shenanigans, such as conducting an orchestra, that Mr. Bean has engaged in.
Among his many talents, Rowan Atkinson is actually a drummer - he didn't just learn the technique for this sketch.
No he isn't. First thing I checked myself. Top search, He is NOT a drummer.
@@JareddarArt I have seen lots of pages claim he is not a drummer. But none shows any reference to where that fact comes from. It's common that there is a reference to an interview etc.
Love this clip, a classic.
"Would you like the Colombian medium roast today?"
"No thanks I'll take the Mind Collapse"
He actually knows how to play the drum
Yes!
Cool Hoodie! Greetings from Chile!
Rowan has a Masters in electrical engineering from Oxford. Just a clever and funny person threw and threw. Have you’ve herd of Jost nickel Andrew? He’s just a brilliant drummer and worth a watch
Yes Jost is an absolute monster!!!
While I agree with the sentiment of the second sentence, it's spelt through not threw :)
@@jimdigriz2923 c'mon you knew what he meant........ sorry........ come on !!!! lol
@@leightonwestbury92 Whilst I agree that it is often difficult to tell in a purely textual medium like a comments section, it never ceases to disappoint me that most folks' first reaction to comments like Jim's is to interpret it as being derogatory criticism, when it is just as likely (if not more so) that it was intended as a polite attempt to educate. Many who engage in comments sections are not native English speakers (let alone writers), and many who are offering corrections are doing so with good intentions. This is especially true where the correction refers to homophones (as in this case), because in many cases the person being corrected has likely only ever HEARD the phrase in question, rather than having read it, and the resultant incorrect spellings easily understood. I see little, if any, evidence of any intent to offend the original commenter in Jim's reply (he specifically states that he agrees with the sentiment, for example, and ends with a "smiley" emoticon).
@@kevreeduk222 Thanks, it's nice to see that some people get it's not mean't as a criticism.
Amazing performance by Rowan as always!
The only scenario that makes sense is live playback - obviously very well rehearsed (acting bits, stage movement, rhythm patterns, repetition and choreograpy) together with an off scene musician/drummer on a keyboard or a sampling synthesizer following Rowan (via monitor or directly from a wing) as rehearsed.
I gotta feeling that Rowan is actually a decent drummer.
Me too.
Or an outrageously hard working, disciplined and attentive student of whatever he sets his brilliant mind too!
camoon u didnt know he has drummer background?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Since others have argued to and fro whether Rowan could play drums or not, I'd be interested to know your opinion of how likely it is for someone who doesn't play to adopt the left hand grip seen in the photo below that pops up on searches (although as you say, he may just be attentive, liked The Move and had watched Bev Bevan... :-) ) : imgur.com/gallery/92bbdBj
Ya this is a classic. I always assumed he was just that good, that he actually just rehearsed it a million times til he got it right. Who knows? It's still super entertaining, so who cares? Nice work man.
He'd figure out a way regardless. Absolute genius of a man Kayne
Agreed, just like any other drummer doing a cover or dancer learning specific steps. You learn the flow of the music what to hit and when, where to stand hand how far to move. It is well rehearsed.
I totally forgot about the Carl Palmer cymbal solo in the middle. 😆 Brooooooo, if you want to see the funniest percussion display ever, please react to literally any video by Spike Jones. No, not Spike Jonze the movie director who copped his name, but the musical/comic genius from American TV. The "Tchaikovsky Medley" is a great place to start. Pitched cowbells, gunshots as an instrument, and vaudeville craziness everywhere.
Oh right. Sounds amazing. Great idea
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I hope to see it! All silliness and comedy aside, that was an incredibly tight and diverse band, that had to shift gears from Benny Goodman to Brahms to Cole Porter to John Philip Sousa at the drop of a hat. Possibly the greatest band in television history - and absolutely the most ridiculous.
Funny thing is, I can do this now for REAL! I have *FREEDRUM* which is a virtual drumkit. It has 4x usb flash stick sized midi sensors that has a gyro, proximity sensor and bluetooth inside of it to allow you to use it like a regular drumkit and you look like Rowan in this video but for REAL!! I pack it in my bass case when I jam with the band, just in case the drummer forgets his cymbals (which he did once) so I played the FREEDRUM kit as a practice for the guitarist to warm up with, it confused a few people walking past me at the studio! lol Then 45 minutes later the drummer returned with his cymbals and we jammed like usual. I used the FREEDRUM app on my phone which syncs to the midi sensors then I plugged my phone into an amp so it was loud enough for the guitarist to hear and play to with his amp.
Sounds fun!
Rowan Atkinson is the best at physical comedy
Yes. Genius level
actually something you did miss the video feed is flipped so they can show it on youtube and not get in trouble, so what you see on the right is actually on the left
there is no other like it. ❤
👌
Rowan is the best rubber-faced fool. Remember his London 2012 Olympics...'Chariots of Fire'? :-))
Yes I do. Utterly brilliant Phil
@@AndrewRooneyDrums He's part of a generation of very intelligent, silly but smart, British comedians. Good channel...I appreciate it as an 'air drummer' :-)
Amazing performance
Yes Mani!
Have you reacted to Adam Rupp’s Drum Solo he’s one of the founding members of Home Free a A Capella group they call him a freak of nature.
Soooo very cool! Excellently excicuted!
Brilliant isn't it Mark!?
Yea...he plays the drums!
I studied this for my BA Hons in theatre management... there is an interview where the stage manager explains how it was and was not done....but lets not spoil the magic...
.
there were no in ear prompts. the routine was practised lots.
Brilliant, it wouldn't surprise me if he is a drummer,. he's coordination Is good
What if he had a visual prompt? Some kind of monitor or light system to prompt a rhythm, then practice like hell to get the hits down.
Hi Andrew, nice reaction. This guy is, surprinsingly, very accurate. I guess he actually plays drums but his air-drumming skills are outstanding. I have shared this video with other drummers in the last years, and they agree with me. The timing in his eyes when the "cat" is on the toms is incredible. Let alone the fact that he is brilliantly funny.
Suggestion for a reaction video: Benny Greb - Grebfruit (the Drumeo video of this song is probably the best recording of it in terms of seeing what he's playing)
One of my faves! I did a podcast episode with him and he dropped so many gold nuggets
You remember Mr Bean how I do. His Xmas special was an absolute ball tearer. Thank you for this! \m/ \m/
My daughter always looks forward to Christmas JUST so we can justify watching “Merry Christmas Mr. Bean”. We’ve even started buying Christmas crackers just because of that episode!!!
@@stringemup5941 That is so awesome!!
@@rowanthefirst148 Thanks! Now if I could just get her to watch the rest of the series. She does like the animated “Mr. Bean”-she’s 7….
Now that I’ve just said that, I guess there are a few episodes I might have to be vigilant about….
@@stringemup5941 Yeah from memory there may be a couple of scenes that could require explanation lol.
There's a good chance that the recording is mirrored to avoid copyright etc.
Thanks mister🙏🙏
Rowan Atkinson is the absolute master of physical comedy in my opinion! I'm not a drummer (but a guitarist) and I found it absolutely hilarious - especially the cymbal muting.
Takes a lot of skill to do this in time with no feedback - wonder if he had in-ears back then? Probably not, all just memorised.
As I've read from the comments - no IEMs... just major rehearsal/memorisation!
rowans actually took it from the comedian Michel Courtemanche just incredible
His facial expressions and nonchalant attitude behind the "kit" reminds me a little bit of Simon Phillips.
You're forgetting the crash cymbal. There's a ride and crash cymbal. The hi-hat was always on the left. I play drums to
Andrew, you gotta try Flo Mounier. From the band Cryptopsy.
Rowan is a national treasure
You can't beat that.
There may have been a timing light at the front of the stage, or even a few different coloured timing lights .......... just a guess
He is my favorit man.
4:15 check your privilege! As a lefty the kit only really worked left handed for me but every single gig there's pressure to use the house kit then complaining about having to switch up the mics... I'm sure plenty of lefties have put up with having to adapt everything to play a right handed kit for a peaceful life.
New Zealand I am from there two :D
Kia Ora!
In-ear monitors were only introduced in the mid-80's and this may have been from just before that. There's a transcription of the whole piece here: czcams.com/video/Xm08nJ4opac/video.html
Search for hellacopters ice drum, it's a funny thing but a really good drummer.
Done in the ice hotel where everything is done in ice, even the hotel itself
Looking at this my theory would be there is an actual drummer off stage playing the real notes. Totally agree that this whole performance was rehearsed until the cows come home which helps two people keep in sync, Rowan and the person on the actual instruments
Either that or he really has a set of invisable percussion.
That was waaaaay before in-ear pieces!
This was recorded in the early 80's. I don't think they had in ear pieces in those days.
Rowan 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
He is actually not a drummer, but is a comic genius and perfectionist . Although there are a couple of photos of him practicing on a real drum kit. I have no idea how he timed the act but don’t believe he had in-ears back then.
Perfectionist is clearly obvious Darryl.
The performance is wonderful. And dead accurate
He, actually, WAS a drummer years ago!
@@stefangolubek8219 He said he wasn’t. Where is your evidence to the contrary?
I haven't watched your video yet, but am familiar with the Mr Bean invisible drum set skit and as someone who played drums since 1962, I'd say he could probably play pretty well as soon as he got used to the physical "feel" of things. I noticed that he did at least two stick twirls too. To me, what he did here is actually harder than really playing and this video is not as well timed as the original in which every stroke was dead on. Let's see if we agree.
Tim Minchin's version of this idea is fantastic too, well worth a watch
Sounds awesome Joe!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I'm certain it's called So F**king Rock, starts off the same as this Rowan Atkinson one. Have fun!
Taking mime to another level
Rod Morgenstein dixie dreggs/Winger and Tony Reno of Europe are left handed and their kits are the other way
The answer is because i live in America ............. WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS B4 ????????????????????? I grew up on rerun Benny Hill, Monty Python, Doctor Who.... the Dr with the big nose and brown curly hair from the early 80's? on what we call the PBS channel. As you say they were CHEECKY tv shown for a wee lad to watched for sure. But thank you to the Brittish legends that Shaped an American Indians life outlook !! Cheers to my Neighbors wherever you are !!!!!!!!
Tom Baker is the Doctor in question. One of the best IMHO.
I remember the Not The Nine O'clock News series. In some of those episodes they all played as a band in the end and Rowan was sitting behind the drums. I don't know if it was all playback or not, but it looked real at least. I would guess that Rowan maybe was an amateur drummer in some band in his younger years or something, but I've never heard him mention it. Many years ago I bought a DVD with the best of that series, but unfortunately the band part was not included, so I have nothing to support my comment, just a vague memory. Just saying he MIGHT be an amateur drummer anyway, not that I actually know anything about it.
He was a percussionist (at least). I saw him play in a jazz rock band (can't remember the name) in the bar at Keble College, Oxford in probably October 1978 or 1979. It was after one of his successful Edinburgh fringe runs, which was why we went to see the band.
According to a Google search, Rowan Atkinson doesn't play drums. I guess he did his research. ; )
Jeez. He sure did Jake!
There are pictures of him sitting at a drumkit floating around the internet. Probably does actually play drums.
In late 90's I've met a british pianist/singer who claimed He was playing with Rowan Atkinson in the same band and, as He said, He was actually pretty good drummer!
Check out the 'Fatal Beatings' skit, it's the best
Michel Courtemanche played the ''Funny Invisible drum Kit'' in 1987 for the first time. This link's from 2009 See video here: czcams.com/video/5rXUS1keuv4/video.html
Not only can he play the drums. He also holds a HGV licence so can go trucking too.
Wow you sent me on a little rabbit hole to find out when in-ears were 1st used.To my surprise it was the mid 1980s and invented over a century ago 🤯🤯🤯
Wow! Nice Leon :)
This is pretty funny stuff. And, I will wager you on this: air drumming like this is actually more strenuous then playing it on a kit!
Wanna have another laugh?
Try Excrementory Grindfuckers : Grind it yourself
Just wondering if it is possibe the copy of the video you got was mirror flipped in order to try and fool the algorithm and not get a DCMA takedown. That may explain why the kit seemes reversed.
Rehearsed and performed with a live drummer off stage. Is what I think.
Tom Tom magazine along with others have confirmed he is NOT a drummer. This was a very well thought out and rehearsed skit.
This guy analyses comedy
Rehearsal, Rehearsal, Rehearsal 👍
looks like hes playing on Neil Peart's drum set lol
LOL yes!
😄😄😄
This is from the 80s or early 90s... I don't think they had in-ears that small back then. Could be visual cues in front of him (behind the audience).
100% rehearsed the hell of
Edit: Might be a drummer also

I might need another listen I mean :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I could ofcourse be wrong but it sounded like a ride to me !
No in ears , just a very well rehearsed routine as far as I can research . I'm not sure when this was recorded ? But I think I like the mystery . Like the magicians secrets. 👍🏻☮❤
No in ears would be very hard to believe. But I wouldn't put anything past Rowan Atkinson.
I was going to go on but then realised I would be speculating .
I bet someone knows how it was done . 👍🏻☮🤗
Maybe this is where George Kranz got some of his weirdness from.
so we can say he would the best drummer ever?
I don't know which one came first but there is also this excellent sketch from Canadian mime Michel Courtemanche:

:D
For a similar performance, you might want to check Michel Courtemanche - Drummer (le batteur).
/watch?v=NfeGWwUAvF4
Mr Bean also performs invisible piano also.. but drum routine is funnier
Oh right. I haven't seen that one.
I don't think that the first cymbal sound is the hi-hat. To me it sounds like one of the other cymbals.
That's what a hi hat from the time sounds like when wide open and tapped casually like that
That was my immediate reaction - I'm not sure why anyone would assume it was a hi hat. A drummer duplicates the routine on a kit in this video clip, the initial cymbal strike is at 1:20 : czcams.com/video/aEE759NVYgE/video.html
