The pseudo solarization technique was discovered accidentally by his model/assistant, Lee Miller. She turned the light on in the darkroom while some prints were in the developer, she quickly turned them off again and this was the result. Man Ray liked the effect and utilised it. Lee Miller was a Vogue model who later became a war photographer, she was a very interesting person.
Thanks for sharing that story! He definitely elevated it to another level in his photos.
Man Ray and Lee Miller solarized the film during the development, not the print.
The effect of a film solarization pass isn't the same on mid tone Affecting them not too much only becomming a little darker and bright highlights that are reversed changing from black on film to white (from white on print to black).
A heavy rim-light on a face gives a black outlining when the film is solarized
