Let's go to the Yesteryear farm show in Longmont, Colorado! 23, 24 & 25 August 2024.
We are finally ready to attend a tractor show. The 1939 Caterpillar D4 "Lil Lefty" is not quite ready. Let's take the 1937 Cat 22 agricultural crawler tractor, 2F9425 SP, "The old man." I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.

We have a WWII tank hauling trailer to haul crawlers on. Operators learn right quick about the practice of easy-does-it, or else they learn about the dreaded Cat-apult.
Someday if things work out I hope to have a rig like that. 😊👍
I've had my share of slipping off ramps, never flipped one though. I always remembered what one of my bosses told me when I was young, "Never jump, just hang on and ride it out!"
Me too, and at a certain point there's just nothing you can do. I remember watching my grandfather slide down a very steep metal ramp with a crawler. He sat there, calm as a cucumber. He was like that in any situation. He always said if you tense up, it just makes any potential impact that much worse. 😊
8:05 thats the grease point of pivot bearing ( inner side bearing) of that side of the track frame, this grease fitting with long line to bearing is a big upgrade to the grease fitting underneath of the Cat Fifteen...
It sounds like that grease point is just like the pillow block on the back of our D4 frame. It's interesting that so many things are much further forward on the 22 and smaller tractors. 👍
@@lifeafterourloss i think the trackframe of D4 pivot around the same axle as the sprocket. The 15/8c20/ 22 has the pivot point a bit ahead of the sprocket on a Axle, that is also the centre of gravity point, where the machine balances going over a bump, and where operator is, that is the best place for the seat... not have too bumpy ride. All other designs (the cabin more forward like for example some newer komatsu are in my opinion bad designs)

I have had one of those lock and lube grease gun ends on all my grease guns for the last 10 or so years and it works great even when it is not new.🙋♂😉
😂, Dad is a bit of a pessimist when it comes to any "new" thing. I am definitely sold on them. 👍
6:18 on the right side of the transmission case there is a small level plug with square head, Oil should just come out out if it is taken out.
Okay, 🤔. I suspected it was similar to the D4 but wasn't exactly sure. Thank you for the clarification. 😊

There was a fifteen at the show. I did a short walk around on it. Very neat little tractor I love the little flat head engine. Many things in common with the twenty two. I love the little tens too. In hindsight they would have been a lot easier to work on and haul around than a D4, 😉. 👍
@@lifeafterourloss yes thats why i bought the small ones, for easy transport and space in my workshop.
The transmission and most of trackframe and tracks are the same of a Fifteen, 8c Twenty, and Twenty two.( Interchangeable parts)
The back of the seat had rounded corners in later models than the Fifteen era , for easyer acces to drawbar i think.

Looks like you need to get some 1/4-1/2" square stock and weld it to the ramps for traction...that would keep the rubber mat from slipping off...and help with stuff that needs to be loaded up....

We were going to do just that. Loading up after the show I had the same experience.😬 We figured out that if the helper springs on the ramps are removed we could push them closer together. That put the grousers squarely in the middle of the ramp where they could bite. With the ramps so far apart it was only on the edge of the angle iron. Knowing my grandfather that things had plenty of Marvel in it already. You can bet it's going to have a few more sips shortly. 😁 👍
Spinning the crank like that is a good way to get a broken jaw and teeth knocked out of your face if it kicks back.

I love watching old Iron!!!!! Comment on cranking...... Always grip crank handle with fingers and thumb going around same direction so a backfire will allow handle to fly out of hand freely.... If you hold it like a screwdriver backfire may cause thumb to end up pointing at your elbow

You should not have to spin the crank to start. Two pulls with choke on full. It should start on the third pull, primed or not. I am having that problem with my 8C 20, I need to pull the intake and check for a leak.

I would like to know where you got the adapter for the grease fittings on the cat 22? looks like it works good I have the lock tight tip and i love it have it on my Milwaukee battery grease gun makes a one man job easy. love the video keep up the good work.
Thank you! To be honest the adapter came with the 7U toolbar tractor we bought. I didn't have the foresight to ask the gentleman where he got it. I've been looking for a spare ever since. If I'm able to find one I will let everybody know where I got it.
I just searched button-head grease fitting and there is some on Amazon and eBay. 👍

Do you mix stay bil in your gasoline?
We do off and on. Right now I'm fortunate that the gas station near me has an ethanol-free blend which lasts quite a bit longer.

Was the Cat 22 the cheapest model back in the day? We had these also in Estonia but none survived ww 2 cause they where blown up or deliberately destroyed to prevent others from using them. The ones that did survive ww 2 where later scrapped when they broke down. Very happy to see the old 22 running again. LOL 11:30 that would be a perfect thing for a late 50s dodge-plymouth dash.
I'm guessing it would have been but I'm not 100% sure on that. One thing I've had trouble pinning down was the actual new cost of caterpillars. It always amazes me how Global caterpillar became almost instantly. I suppose that would work for a Dodge Dash. 😁
