  • In this video, I (former Bain & Company Manager) will share the benefits of using Executive Summaries in business presentations and how to craft effective Exec Sums for your own presentations. The Executive Summary is the most important slide in business presentations. It synthesizes the presentation's key messages on one slide. A practical and effective approach is to write 3-5 concise and insightful bullet points on a slide and start your presentation with the Executive Summary.

    Thanks Felix, great content. I'm about to start making videos for CZcams and my company website for customers. Therefore it would be great if you could make some similar instructional videos about creating well-structured presentations for customers. I will be presenting technical information. I basically want to be able to get my vids to down 5 minutes or less, concluding with 3-5 take home points that resonate with non-experts. I'll be following the principles you've outlined brilliantly for corporate presentations, simplified for general viewing. Thanks again!

      Hi, thanks for your comment! I'll look into creating more customer focused presentation videos. In general the same principles apply. Be crystal clear about the 3-5 takeaways you want your customers to leave with and then structure your presentation to achieve that goal.

    Hi Felix, I am a student studying business administration in college and this video provided me with a lot of clarity. However, a lot of times, my professor would want executive summaries in a word document and I am not sure about how much details I should actually put because as you said, it should be concise and summarise key messages but my professors would give us a max capacity of 2 pages in arial 12 font which is honestly a lot of space. So much that I could fit my entire presentation into the 2 pages even if I list out every small detail. In this case, what should I actually put in the summary?

    • @felix_haller
      @felix_haller  Pƙed 2 lety +3

      Hmm, the length and detail of exec sums depends a lot on the situation/ context. I'd say the exec sum shouldn't be more than 10-20% of the overall document and the longer the document the smaller the percentage. For instance If your presentations has only 5 slides, your exec shouldn't be more than 1 page in a big font size. On the other hand of your presentation or document is 100 pages, like an extensive study or report, you could have exec sums over a few pages. Try to think about your audience and what is most effective is also helpful to consider

      That does seem like a bit too much for an executive summary, my tutor has allocated at least 200 to 300 words for it so this is a bit strange

    Thank you for the video, A question i have is. when you write your executive summary how does this differ if they would like a presentation of the summary without using the likes of power point slides, either by video call (Due to pandemic) or in person because they want it that way?

    • @felix_haller
      @felix_haller  Pƙed rokem

      Hey David, the biggest question would be whether you can use any supporting materials, be it a PowerPoint slide, an email that you send to your audience in advance or something else. If it isn't possible for your audience to see the Exec Summary while you present it, it will be a bit harder. If it is over the phone or in person without any slides, I'd recommend keeping the Exec Summary shorter and being very intentional about the structure. For instance, focusing on only 3 points, or themes, introducing the themes or main points fist, and then diving into each of them. Key will be to go slow and have a simple structure to avoid losing your audience. I made another video about the "rule of three" which might be helpful

    My PPT is on sales analysis in Asia.
    So what should I mention in the exec summary slide?
    I think I should mention different slicer options,is it so?

    • @felix_haller
      @felix_haller  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      It depends on what the messages of your sales analysis are since sales snalysis is a very broad term. I would probably say something about current state of sales, like where are we winning, what are the growth rates, where are we overperforming/ underperforming and then say something about the outlook/ next steps of what we should do to improve.

  • @wwtsssportsmanagement2458

    The Executive Summary should be written last after the remainder of the plan has been finished or before start?

    • @felix_haller
      @felix_haller  Pƙed rokem

      It depends, there isn't a perfect time. In general I'd say it is very effective to create a 50-80% version of the exec summary right at the beginning and then refining it from time to time as you build the presentation. At the end once all slides are completed, I'd go back to the exec summary to finalize and wordsmith.

      It is the same slide. You can either start with it, which I prefer, or end with it to recap what has been said.
