  • Spot the differences in their technique? Play it a few times to catch them.
This video is a good demonstration of the fact that running technique is not unique to each runner. This is one of the most common misunderstandings about running - each runner has their own running technique that is unique to them. No, not really.
The way we move looks deceptively individual because of little individual habits and quirks, yet at the heart of it the mechanics of our movement have a common foundation, a standard.
We indeed are all unique individuals, but we are all subject to the same laws of nature that govern all of us the same way without exemptions. The function of our lungs, the way the blood flows, the way we digest, hear, smell etc are all the same for all, and that is normal. When something is not normal, when there are unique deviations from the normal - that's usually called a disease.
The level of perception is unique to each individual because it is comprised of our individual experiences, abilities and level of skill. Our level of skill is unique to each one of us. The way we move looks deceptively individual because of little individual habits and quirks, yet at the heart of it the mechanics of our movement have a common foundation, a standard.
It is important to understand which parts of you are unique and which ones are not so you don't suffer unnecessarily and prevent yourself from improving, but instead use everything available to you to advance yourself.
