Jonty Hall: Kielder's in my blood

  • As a nine-year-old boy living on the patch of Northumberland where the North Tyne rises, Jonty Hall was asked to be a part of history as work to create Kielder Water was completed.
    Years later, he works as part of our team at Kielder, with part of his role being to oversee the flow of water at Kielder Dam.
    Here, he tells the story of how Kielder is "in his blood".

      Yes, I think people would pay to be taken into the tunnel's too.

      Having had the luck of being taken round the dam and tower, sadly there's little to no chance of a video tour being allowed. We were under very strict instructions as to what little we could photograph because so much of it is critical infrastructure of great potential interest to terrorists.

      This was shot in the tunnel that leads to the Valve Tower. If you walk across the dam and look down the grassed hill, you can see the tunnel entrance.
