PA Limestone Streams - Geology, Entomology, and Fly Fishing Tactics

- Central PA limestone streams are very unique in how they differ from a classic spring creek/limestone stream. The mountainous Pennsylvania geography and the geologic features allows them to support a wide variety of macro life which in turn, creates wonderful, yet challenging, fishing conditions. This video goes over the geology and entomology at a high level and provides some input to various tactics that can be used to overcome some of the challenges encountered on the many of the infamous PA streams. Enjoy the video!
This is a topic that we are very passionate about and always eager to learn more. If you feel that we may have missed anything or have an interesting fact on limestone streams or useful fly fishing tactic, please leave a comment below. We very much enjoy reading them.
Tight lines,

Very interesting, informative and educational, excellent job!!
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
I recognize a few of these little limestoners, true gems. Tight lines from a fellow western pa college fisherman
+Tom J so many great streams in central PA! Tight lines man! Hope to run into you on the water someday!
Tight lines my dude!

Love your channel. Kettle Creek is my home water as well
Great vid guys. Super informative, your editing is sick too!
+Nathan W. Thanks man! Really appreciate the support!
thanks guys! Ready for warm weather!
Agreed! Warm weather and some good hatches! Thanks for watching Craig!
Cool video guys! Really enjoyed it
Thanks fellas! Means a lot coming from you guys!
We will have to get together sometime and fish, would be a lot of fun!
Agreed! Do a little fishing, share some ideas, and shoot a sweet video
Well done. Very informative. Next time you do a video please include shots of your fly selection and how you rig your leaders for various stream conditions. Keep up the good work !!
Sure thing! Thanks for watching
Great video !
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Good stuff, guys. It did not occur to me to check under rocks in different types of water. I also did not know that scuds are more prevalent in slower moving water, although I've caught many fish on scuds in riffles, or that mayflies like the more oxygenated water. Good things to think about and keep in mind. I'll be up your way next month, hitting Spring and Penns. Can't wait!
+Tomas Y thanks for the great comments! This is a subject that we find very fun to learn about, plus it helps with fishing haha. You should be getting here just in time for some great fishing. Maybe we'll run into each other on the stream. Tight lines!
I know what you cats look like, so I'll keep my eye open for you on the water. Just don't high-hole me, or we'll have to scuffle! I'm kidding. I just like to say "high-hole." Peace.
Haha you know what we look like so you have the advantage lol
Good job fellas!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good stuff thanks
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the very professional and informative video. Could you tell me how you rig your leader and tippet when fishing small, unweighted scuds? Do you tie them as on dropper tags above a heavier fly, or do you trail them from a heavier fly?
I like to tie them on as a dropper above a heavy fly. Another good option is to drop shot rig them. I believe scuds are one of those flies that just fish better on a weightless hook
Love this vid. Do you find a lot of scuds on Penns Creek?
+Cory Cuje thanks Cory! As for your question, I'm not really sure. My brother and I do not have as much experience on Penns. I do think that Penns is considered freestone with limestone influence so I'm not sure how that would affect the abundance of crustaceans like scuds and cress bugs. Great question! Sorry I wasn't able to give a clear answer.
Penns creek does have a scud population but it is not as prolific as streams such as spring creek
Backyard Angling no worrie. Tight lines!
What is your college major?
+Noah Quattro my bachelors is in biology and I did undergraduate research on the effects of AMD reclamation on macro life so aquatic macros are a topic that I love learning about! I also did my Masters in bioengineering where I specialized a little more in materials and covered buffer systems a little more in depth. It is neat to be able to use what i learned in school and apply it to fishing. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

Backyard Angling ya I want to do a fisheries wildlife biology major this coming year.
+Noah Quattro I've heard that Mansfield university has a great program and they have an established internship every year with Trout Unlimited. Dan Collins who runs Hardway Outdoors CZcams channel goes there for some sort of fisheries biology. He's a great guy and I'm sure he'd answer any questions you might have.
I'm a nursing major of all things. Lol. Tight lines to ya and good luck in the future!

Great video!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
