- It's no secret, I have acquired quite the collection of cheap old digital cameras. They are an incredible value for money and offer new and seasoned photographers alike the opportunity to delve deep into photography on a budget. Here's my current lineup, minus a few cameras I sold off over the last few months (to fund new ones). It includes ten cameras from 2001 to 2016. Enjoy.

How old is YOUR camera?
7 year old sony a3500 still takes amazing images(under good lighting, whenever I can actually focus) but still amazing

You've seen my film collection, but oldest digital still functioning is my K-r from 2010.
Aaah what memories! my first digital camera was a Kyocera S5 compact with truly pathetic battery life. I remember sitting down one time with a full charge to go through the menu settings, by the time I had it set up the battery was dead. And my much-loved Pentax *st D, I was caught by a freak wave on holiday and no, they definitely weren't weather sealed. At all. Had later Pentax DSLRs but they never really felt the same. Switched to Sony e-mount, but I still love my little Pentax Q7 system for sheer fun and convenience.
Technically your E-450 is not micro four thirds, it's just four thirds. m43 was the designation of mirrorless cameras, not DSLRs. Same size sensor.

@@snappiness As a late digital adopter, four thirds passed me by. When I checked out Olympus DSLRs prices, they were too rich for my pocket as an experiment.

Up date to my previous comment, my collection has expanded, I now have three Sony digital cameras, the Sony F828, Sony R1 and the Sony H1, all three of these take amazing photos, and I'm amazed at the capabilities of the H1. The F828 and the R1 are, as we know, just amazing. Oh, and I've picked up an Olympus E20N, all of these additions are in mint condition, (I'm really fussy about condition).

I love your videos exploring the potential of older cameras. I started with the Pentax k100d and loved it so much. So much so that years later I went and got the 10d as I couldn’t afford it at the time. I am so torn with going back to Pentax from m4/3 Olympus.
Great review, my oldest camera is a Olympus E-1. With several lenses and is in use. Recently came across an Olympus E-30, as I was in the market for a few more pixels .

What a great video! Thank you. We share an 'open-hand' ethos in the appreciation of older equipment with the willingness to pass most along in due time. My workhorse is a K20D, but I value a K-m for reasons you note of your K10D. I recently sold off our 3 vintage 35 mm SLRs (Pentax Super Program, Ricoh XR-2s, Mamiya ZE) and lenses to fund a K-70, but in the end I decided that the pleasure of familiarity in the K20D outweighed the potential in a modern camera. An uncommon choice, I'm sure, but one you might share. It's like the Ringo Starr lyric, "grow old with me; the best is yet to be." I'll move on from the K20D when it breaks down, but until then I'm enjoying it and a little prime Pentax-M kit. Thank you again for your channel.

I went to the Grand Canyon a few years ago and brought only the GRII with the wide angle converter. Best decision I ever made.
Loved seeing some of these "blast from the past" cameras, the sensor on the E-20N is a 2/3" CCD just in case you wanted to know.
I collect cameras as well. I have many. I collect digital and film cameras. It’s a hobby - I love to play with different cameras! I bought my first camera in 1969! A Kodak Instanatic with the slot in film cartridge! Now I have a collection of point and shoots, super zoom, Leica 1 inch and micro 4 thirds cameras , Nikon DSLR, Sony RX100 and Sony A7 111.. next I’ll get a Nikon Z50 or maybe a Z7 mark 2.. I prefer Mirrorless hands down!!! They beat DSLRs by a million!

The ability to adapt pretty much any mount is what also makes me consider getting an Olympus M4/3 or maybe an old Sony E Mount camera as a secondary.
If I may suggest another quirky and not too expensive old digital camera, have a look at the Sony Mavica lineup. There are also a few good videos about them here on CZcams.

Yes I'm a camera nerd, a collector of vintage cameras of well mainly Canon and Konica Minolta, hunting An Olympus E20p at the moment. Great channel, lovin it.
Great video. I’m a little amazed the Pentax Q has went. I love that little beast. Feel like a Spy using it lol.
Picked up the Olympus em-1 with the 17mm 2.8. Sold the lens and the body ended up costing about £40. I put the 15mm body cap lens on it and call that my “digital disposal”. Just fun to play with now and then. Recommend you try out the body cap on the ep2

a great video once again like all the others! my oldest two cameras are from 2003: first one to complete my pentax collection the Pentax *ist D and the other one i really love and didn't sell is the Minolta Dimage A1. like to shoot with also because of the flexible EVF and the battery grip, lovely feature. :)

My oldest digital camera is also the first I bought back then, a Nikon Coolpix 885 from 2001, which I purchased new in 2002 for more than 600 euros and got drenched in a rainstorm three weeks after purchase. The camera kept working, but half the buttons became unresponsive pretty soon. I thought I could have it replaced under warranty but was told that warranty didn't cover accidental water damage. What a great entry to digital photography, huh!
So, the oldest WORKING digital cameras I have are both from 2004, the Nikon Coolpix 8800 and the Olympus E-300. Both great cameras that still give pretty amazing results. The Coolpix 8800 is bulky but I'm still impressed by its lens, a whopping 35-350mm f/2.8-5.0 10x zoom that takes sharp photos. The Olympus e-300 is a Four Thirds camera with a great CCD sensor. I use it with several adapters and vintage manual lenses, and I know it's a trite remark, but in several instances it really gives me film-looking results. Cheers! Rick

My oldest camera is 15 years old. The Nikon D80 from 2006. I got it used years ago and has been wonderful.
Great! I really liked my D80 while I had it. Feels way more modern than it's age suggests. Only sold it to fund more crazy old camera projects ;)

Awesome vid! Love the addition of the E-20 :) I picked up an E-10 a couple years back. 4mp and it still takes amazing pics. I was also surprised to see that it has live view considering the camera is 20+ years old.
Haha - I was reading the original DPreview article from when the e-20 was released, and they had a little line complaining about something with live view. The line concluded with something like, "but there's no other camera that offers it." It really is amazing the amount of tech in this old camera. I love it.
@@snappiness It is indeed pretty impressive. Can't speak to the E-20 but the E-10 reminds of shooting film since you really have to slow down and plan your shots in a similar way. Depending on the memory card you've got it fills up quickly limiting the number of shots you can take, though the dual memory cards slots can make up for this. Do you have any of the lens attachments for it? Mine came with the WCON-08B (gives a 28mm equiv view). Makes it looks pretty absurd. Love it! Also been trying to hunt down the TCON-300 telephoto attachment but no luck so far.
@@B9scrambler I have the wide angle attachment and love it. Agreed it makes it look like some old blunderbuss flared rifle, haha. The TC300 is on my watch list. I don't know if I'll pick it up but it would really complete the kit.

The first digital camera I ever bought was in 2001, the Toshiba PDR-M61. It was the filler camera between my Canon AE-1 and my Kodak Advantix C700 APS camera at the time. I sold it off around 2005 but was thinking of getting it again.
I use a Ricoh 8.1 megapixel GR digital camera which I love.
So funny story, I can't remember when I subscribed to this channel because of the Pentax related content (I shoot on a K1-II, Ricoh GR II, *ist 35mm, and converted K-01.) But as it turns out, watching this video at random I realized oh yeah! I bought your K-01 a few months ago. It works great by the way, and I hope you were able to find a more suitable full spectrum DSLR for your needs. I can imagine a full spectrum converted K1 could be a potential holy grail for astrophotography work while pumping out amazing monochrome shots and wild colors when out and about experimenting.

Hello! That's funny. I'm glad the camera worked out for you. I have my eyes on two potential full spectrum cameras I think would be sweet. We'll see how it turns out :)
Oldest digital camera owned is the 1998 Minolta Dimage EX zoom with both the 38-105 equivalent 7-21 and the wide lens unit 28mm equiv. 5.2. The lens units are interchangeable with the camera unit. Has a whooping 1.5 megapixels and was reviewed with raves at that time. There was also a 1.5 meter extension cord to use between the camera unit and the lens unit. Next oldest was the Nikon Coolpix 995 and like it so much I purchased three of them. Converted one one them to IR and really liked the results. The 995 was a 3.5 mp.
I have a slightly larger collection of old digital cameras as I can’t resist them if I see them at bargain prices!. My most used are both 6 mp dslrs, a Pentax K100 and Nikon D100. The Pentax I had from new together with the kit lenses and 35mm prime, the Nikon is a more recent buy and use it with old Sigma lenses. I also have a few fixed lenses cameras from Fuji S1000fd (cost me less than a McDonald’s coffee) to older 2 and 3mp Olympus camedia models like the C3020 and C2030. These are very slow but I’ve had some great images from them. Keep up the great work reviewing and using these old gems.
Fantastic. I also can't resist picking up a bargain camera when I see it. If it wasn't for my rule about selling them once I haven't used them for a few months I would have twice this number still :)
My first DSLR Pentax *istDL which I bought new and still ien and use . I got a Pentax K100D from my son as he upgraded to a Pentax K50. I have a Pentax K70 and a Pentax K3-11 in my collection
Wow, I have quite an extensive camera collection as well, both film and digital, including the Olympus E10, which I bought new way back when- it was featured in a photography magazine with the cover story "Olympus Goes Pro" Love to shoot with it now and then. The rubber surface has become sticky over time, trying to figure a way to deal with that and find a cheap source for compact flash cards- love your channel
Amazing. I am extremely impressed with my e20, so I'm sure the e10 that started it all is also quite good.
The grip surface of mine is very sticky as well! I have not found a good solution.
Strip it off and put a piece of 70s shag rug instead🤷

I bought the Olympus E-20N new in 2001 for my pro use before moving to an Olympus E300. The E-20N was around £1000 as a kit with large screw on adapters to convert to 28mm and around 250mm coverage. I lost the Tele adapter lens on a job but still have the camera and Wide adapter. Two observations. The rubber grips do go very tacky and just start disintegrating and the lens is indeed f2 at wide setting but due to the semi silvered mirror that it uses to provide a mirror less optical viewfinder I am sure that one will in effect only have the light of an f2.8 or f3.5 for the actual exposure. I think the lowest iso is 80ASA so the chip is being driven to an effective 200ASA it is likely, to compensate and you are stuck with the shutter speed relevent to an 80ASA film. The D70s that came after the E300 starts at ISO200 so an f3.5 kit lens on that provided the same camera shake avoiding shutter speeds wide open. The Olympus lens was very good though and wide open shots were not a problem. Write speed however is painfully slow even with the fastest CF cards. It has TIFF raw file support and is 4:3 proportion aspect ratio. Uses AA batteries (Eneloop obviously preferable). Bear in mind that.. if used on a tripod you have to close the viewfinder blind as there is no flip up mirror to prevent light from the eyepiece fogging your shot due to the unique semi silvered mirror system. Enjoy.
I would like to suggest my favorite old DSLR the Nikon D300 with a 18-55mm GII non VR kit lens, a 55-200mm VR and a 28-80mm G. The cheap Nikkors are amassing. The best part is the image quality from the D300. Holy cow for a 12mp sensor it has become my favorite. I use it more often than my D600 24mp full frame. There are a lot of great older Nikon AF lenses that you can get a great deal on the 70-210mm f4 is one that comes to mind. The list goes on and on. Older higher end Nikons, like Pentax can use older lenses so this might be a new adventure for you.
I knew you had GAS 😂 at least its all really affordable gear for the most part, its pretty cool to see how some of the older stuff stands up these days. You should run some blind image tests to see if we can figure out which shots came from which cameras? I hear great things about those CCD sensors too!
That would be a fun test! I think it would be very difficult, even in a side by side where you were looking at the same subject. Unless maybe if you pixel peeped, then you'd be able to tell the difference between 5mp and 36mp really quickly. But if you just had a sampling of pictures of different subjects and displayed them at normal viewing, my hunch is no one could get it right.
My oldest digital camera is a 2000 vintage Canon D30 (not 30D). It is Canon's first commercial DSLR, a 3.2mp DSLR. Back then it sold new for (US) $3000. LOL. I bought mine in near mint condition about 10 years ago for $100. It still works great and I take it out on occasion to have fun with. It still makes a nice image, certainly more than suitable for most any on-line use.

@@snappiness Indeed. The D30 looks nearly identical to all the subsequent Canon DSLRs such as the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, etc. There was also a D60 that bumped the MP count up to 6mp before they reversed the numbering scheme to 10D, 20D, etc.
Pentax with an Olympus strap? I’m an all in Olympus guy with 6 Olympus digital and 2 Olympus film cameras. My favorite Olympus XZ-2. I’m thinking about buying the Pentax K-1. I like your channel. Looking forward to more old cameras and photos.
If you are still looking to get a lens for the canon 40d get the 50 1.4 STM version, and not the mark ii. If you are looking to get a bright zoom, get the Tamron 17 50 2.8 None VC. Probably best crop zoom with sharp images. A couple nice primes, Canon 24 2.8 and 40mm 2.8 both pan cake lens.
Great recommendations! Those pancake primes have always intrigued me. And the nifty fifty would be cheap and practical. That's a good starting point with any old camera system I buy into.
@@snappiness I like those pancake lens a lot. I recently got myself a Canon XT1 (10mp) silver edition, cheap looking, and cheap feeling, but so small, light, and great images for its time; just the way I like it, and I love it! The 24mm pancake is perfect combination because of the size and weight. By the way this combination is almost the same size as my Oly OMD EM1 with battery grip MFT. A Canon DSLR from mid 2000s as small as a mirrorless micro 43.
Please to a tips and tricks video on where and how to buy old used cameras. What to look out for, etc. This may sound weird but I’ve never bought anything used in my entire 45 years of existence. The thought of it scares me (i.e what if it has issues the seller didn’t disclose) but I want to conquer that fear and get comfortable buying used coz there are obvious benefits.
I really hope we are in for an updated version of this very soon, please?

@@snappiness The Fujifilm S5 Pro is based on the Nikon D200 iirc,same F mount too so it would be easy to grab some old Nikon AI-s or even AF-D lens(which imo were some of the best lenses made in the late 90s-early 2000s like the 50 1.8D and the 85 1.8D and the 80-200 2.8 af-d).Yeah overall a solid choice for CCD enthusiats

I stayed through the video :-) I would like to try the GR-II, but so many scammers in the used market. You have access to outstanding prices. I regret selling my K-7. I bought old 28mm glass for it, set it up for Black and White, and texture and details on images were stunning! ...hope to acquire another one. My oldest camera is a 1980's ME-Super. I bought it on layaway as a poor Army Private First Class (you're probably too young to know about layaway...smile). I have older Sony and Fuji mirrorless rigs and a Canon DSLR, but importantly I'm happy with my gear. Just an old soldier grateful for life and his family. Be well. Peace.

I have the Pentax *istDS. Great camera. Takes good photos. However, I rarely use it. I have it on Ebay but for probably too much. Oh well.
My first Pentax DSLR was the K20D, I was just bit late and missed the CCD model, I heard a lot of good things about CCD so want to get the K10D to try. As far as I remember when I played with my friend's *1st DL I got "tunnel version" on the OVF, where the K20D one looked quite normal and comfortable, wonder how good or bad the OVF of the K10D was ?
Olympus E-20 has 2/3'' sensor. That's a bit larger than the bigger Pentax Q series sensors.

Search for the Olympus 50mm f2 macro lens for your E450. I had tht lens, which is razor sharp. And it's a macro lens on top of that...
I got pentax k200d (why not k10d? - i prefer AA batteries) recently and I'm looking to buy fuji e-x1. My daily is ricoh gr mk 1. These older cameras are really something. Similar to cars from around year 2000 - old, but soooo god I want try them all :D

I think the 20n was the same as the panny fz7 or fz5.

@@snappiness Yeah! It works really really well and paired with the pro lenses (12-60, 50-200 and 50mm Macro) it produces pictures that put some modern cameras to shame... Especially colour sensitive images, in which case Olympus can flex its magic muscles!
The ergonomics are really good to. I can walk around with the E-5 and 50-200 for much longer than with my Nikon D750 and Tamron 35 SP 1.8 before my hand and wrists start to hurt...
Looks like you got rid of that pentax mx1. Looking for something old with character to pickup. Those mx1s are pretty expensive
They are pricey. I only sold mine because after the novelty wore off, I would reach for my Ricoh GR instead when I needed a pocket camera. So I passed it on to someone else :) the GR looks more plain, doesn't have a Flippy screen, has a fixed focal length lens, but overall I like the images better.
Im still dreaming to own one with the canon 40d.

The whole forum is pretty much only old cameras, haha. A couple of us have newer cameras too, but we mostly just share the old ones. Would love to see your photos there.

Yeah that's really overpriced. A supply and demand price increase. You can buy one new (the mark II at least) for $1800. MPB.com has four used ones for sale for $1129, for example.
Why do I have all these cameras, some are for special situations, and others are just because I am a geek photographer, and love using all kinds of cameras. The only female in my house is my kitty, and she told me it's ok ... Cheers!
