- The opening aerial shots of Big Sur featuring the theme song The Shadow of Your Smile, written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster. One of the greatest movie songs of all time, and the footage is breathtaking.
BOY, I think we have a very nostalgic fan club going!!❤
Most Beautiful Opening Seqence of film history.
"You Only Live Twice" has entered the building.
A world that no longer exists. A love story of legend.
but as the movie implies..... it was great while it lasted...
Sadly very true!!!!♥️🇮🇹🇬🇧
Because a failed system and world. All we have is memories now
For regular working class .
The Sandpiper is one of a kind. The scenery, the score, the cast and the story line ... never to be recaptured again. It's one of my favorites.
Lovely movie
ok fight for love
Thank you, Jack
Trumpet, the great Jack Sheldon
RIP, sir
Goodbye, my friend. Johnny Mandel, Nov. 23, 1925-June 29, 2020.
HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL SCORE. THE TRUMPET IS MAGNIFICENT ! VERY FEW ARE AWARE THE TRUMPET SOLO WAS PLAYED BY JACK SHELDON FROM THE "MERV GRIFFIN SHOW". WHAT A TALENT ! FOR THIS, HE WON AN OSCAR FOR THE SONG ! HIS EMOTION ON THIS SONG IS WHAT MADE IT ALL COME TOGETHER. SIMPLY BRILLIANT JACK ! 💙
I am so glad that you pointed that out. Having seen him on Merv's show, where he played second to Merv's silly antics, it is easy to lose that he was an accomplished musician.
YA' GOTTA LOVE JACK SHELDON !!?
No matter how many times I see this opening cinematography, and hear Johnny Mandel's beautiful heartbreaking music, I am moved to tears. Images and music have found their perfect marriage in these three minutes and twenty five seconds of pure heaven on earth.
Wonderful tribute by you. Couldn't agree more.
I feel the same
I feel the same 🙏✨ 🥲
Beautiful comment!
There are angels in our midst, living as musicians, composers and creators of content that reaches the soul. There is no other explanation I can find.
Boy, they don't make movies like this anymore.
Hearing this opening score jets me back to such a beautiful time. The Carmel, Monterey area is breathtaking. So is this score. So was Elizabeth Taylor. It all just seemed to work. It was an Adult love story. Not a teen flick where all they care about is ripping their clothes off and doing it in the back seat of a car. It reflected everything that adults are faced with. To have Taylor and Burton be the stars was perfection. They were the icons of the day. Everyone wanted to see them and to see them together. We all wanted to peek into their lives, knowing we could never experience anything so momentous. I am so greatful for having them on film. We will always have, "The Shadow of their Smile".
FOB1XXL YOU HAVE A WAY WITH WORDS ❤😊
It doesn't get any more lovely or sophisticated than this
Rest In Peace Johnny Mandel 🤍 a legend will never be forgotten.
Beautiful trumpet solo and all the orchestration!! Just touches you in so many ways!! 🎵🎶🎼💋❤👍
JACK SHELDON !
Making it so smooth !
God bless !
Pure greatness .
Ah, Mr. Mandel, the music you created will live on in this man's heart and soul. Thank you, sir, and rest in peace.
R.I.P. Jack Sheldon 12/30/2019
As soon as I read of his death, I had to come here and listen to that matchless trumpet again.
I've just done the same . Jack would have liked that.
@@myjeevie Same. Here's to Jack, someone who made more of an impact on my life than I ever imagined. A great loss to our world of music but living on forever because of the art of recording. His work in children's television helped to educate a generation. He made the world a better place. Jack Sheldon RIP
@@mistyty8234 Beautiful tribute to him Misty. Thank you for sharing that.
You will notice here that the orchestra sets up the intro and then Jack comes in with the melody at the moment Liz Taylor’s name appears. That’s no accident.
I wanted to come here to watch this and remember too.
He played for Merv Griffin many years. One of Jack’s obits I read tonight had this -
“It’s a haunting trumpet he plays,” Griffin told the Los Angeles Times in 2002. “Henry Mancini once told me, ‘If I’ve got a couple making passionate love onscreen and I’m writing the score, it’s Jack Sheldon’s trumpet I want.’ ”
God bless you Jack Sheldon-we'll miss you....
One of the best lovestories ever and the music is gordious .
Probably the best opening credits of any movie, ever. This is one of those movies that will preempt any plans I've made for the day when it comes on TV.
I wonder if people who create beautiful things have a sense of just how deeply beautiful their creations will be...
Interesting and kind of daring choice of trumpet to play this melody. The trumpet player, Jack Sheldon, is a wonderful trumpet player.
For sure, my favorite opening sequence of any movie ever. The theme, Jack Sheldon's trumpet, the unspoiled scenery of Big Sur, the titles typeset in that rickety print remind me of driftwood. Liz was beautiful in the film and the chemistry between her and Richard made the movie better than were it a couple of performers that were not in love in real life (well, that's how I feel about it although some will disagree with me but that's ok). Oh, and the little sandpiper that Liz holds in her hand is so cute. She mends his broken wing and that is truly an act of compassion and and I'm all for that. I really do love this movie and have for decades.
yes beautiful. wish i lived at that time
Such a beautiful theme for a beautiful picture. Although over 50 years have gone by it is still good enough to hear and enjoy.
Truly great music holds up forever and is timeless.
And now there’s from Brazil, Daniel Boaventura, Pianist Bruno Alvarez......
See the Warner Brothers Archive version for the complete ending. Just indescribably lovely, all of it.
I have always been a huge Elizabeth Taylor fan. Saw The Sandpiper Movie, and bought the album, until I wore out grooves in the record. Loved "Shadow of Your Smile," which won an Academy Award for Best Song for Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster. !!@@!!
Please, does anybody sing The Shadow of Your Smile in the soundtrack or in the film?
we have lost both jack sheldon and johnny mandel. the world has become a mean, shabby, hopeless place.
This opening sequence really tears at me. I lived in the Bay Area in the 80's-90's, and Big Sur was my getaway spot. I really miss it.
Mine too. Carmel was my go to place.
I'm not from the US but isn't it still there?
@@AbcAbc-ox6pg my husband and I just spent a long weekend in Big Sur, it was glorious! Still just as magical.
back in 1990, my girlfriend at the time and I had dinner at The Big Sur Inn.. but did not have a place to stay overnight. The server's name was Clovis, and she offered a place for us to stay. A little place down the trail from her and her companion Grady's home which overlooked the ocean. Clovis & Grady lived there for many years.
Johnny Mandel's masterpiece
I watch this every year on my birthday. A little gift to myself. Glorious!
So fortunate to live in the Monterey Bay Area.
This brings back some bittersweet memories for me. A woman who lived in the same town I now do wanted to see this movie on TV. I remember she was being evasive about something. She was planning on breaking up with me, 3 months after she had proposed to me. Seeing where I'm at now, I lucked out.
Jack Sheldon’s trumpet on this is sublime.
For those who might not know, Jack was also the singer on Schoolhouse Rock’s “Conjunction Junction” and “I’m Just A Bill”…
and, he played trumpet on “The Munsters” theme!
RIP, Jack. 🙏❤️
Some credit should also go to the orchestrator Bill Byers for this wonderful orchestration.
YES!!! My arranging hero. Got to study with him long ago. Genius.
And to Gil Evans and Miles Davis, whose albums were the template.
Wistful, sophisticated, sexy, and so substantively romantic. Forever Mandel.
Just beautiful. There are also many flourishes throughout the movie with reiteration of this theme song. Perhaps even more beautiful than the opening music. It's the flutes that get me.
So, so beautiful!
This music is absolutely beautiful. I had to pause the movie to find this music. So glad I did.
The amazing Jack Sheldon + Big Sur.....cant be beat !
It's February 2020 and I'm back here again...wonderful soundtrack.
I come back too. A martini for the soul.
Me too. I revisit every couple of months or so.... Beautiful
Such great movies and soundtracks.
I've always loved the song "The Shadow of Your Smile" and played it on the organ in the early 70s.
Monterey Peninsula back in its heyday. As a San Franciscan I loved going down there. This and Clint Eastwood's Play Misty For Me which had a scene at the old Sardine Factory (one of the first "nice" restaurants my folks took me to as a kid) caught it as it was in the Sixties. As a little boy I remember thinking Burton a fool to prefer Taylor to Eve Marie Saint who I thought the prettiest film star of all except for Julie Christie in Dr Zhivago.
Big Sur, California....great place for a joyride....will be back soon....
Thank you, Mr. Sheldon....Fast Forward from 1965, to 2020: Chris Botti, now plays this same kind of crystalline, achingly beautiful horn...carrying on the tradition on.
I loved this movie. The scenes of the Big Sur, the music; magical. I didn't know that this song was created specifically for this movie. The Big Sur is breathtaking. I took a bus tour on it. Beautiful and frightening at the same time.
Beautiful movie.Fab locations. Shot beautifully.
America your best days are long gone
There is absolutely no other place in the US as beautiful as the west cost!!!!!!!!!!! Viewing this wonderful movie, listening to this moving score, watching the absolute most touching, gorgeous scenic openings ever, provides me with what I imagine a touch of blissful HEAVEN must feel like!!!!!! Thank you for the share!!!!!
Ahhhh that Mandel soundtrack, and that scenery, and, of course, the beauteous Elizabeth to look at.
Saw it during opening run in Radio City Music Hall in August 1965. Still brings a lump to my throat.
Beautiful theme and scenery! I've always loved the soundtrack of this film and you can't seem to get it on a CD. Thanks for this!
Favorite Richard Burton & Liz Taylor movie and The Shadow Of Your smile is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank You for posting this.
Timeless
I'm glad you asked me that Merv !!!
Jack Sheldon !
The best !
Johnny Mandel’s compositions are like classic composers who include all instruments at their certain use. Just beautiful & wonderful originals👏🎶♥️
Saw Sandpiper long ago, almost forgot the beautiful beach scenes, the haunting soundtrack, "Shadow of your smile'.. Liz Taylor in mid 30s back then
Eva Marie Saint still going October 2023 at 99 years of age
I've been to Miami Beach eight times in my life. And Carmel, not once. This scene and "Play Misty for Me" has me doing a serious rethink...

Breathtaking, sensational film, fell in love with the film first time I saw it, still long to see The Big Sur, one day perhaps. Dreamy romantic music, the best ever. Many thanks for this.
The music, the filmography of Bur Sur; what can be more relaxing. The Big Sur, so beautiful yet so frightening if you are driving on it.
Johnny Mandel does great seaside soundtracks; "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea" is another.
Two fabulous actors who loved each other very much BUT who, for whatever the reason, could not live together.
stunning and unforgettable. favorite film of all time
Fabulous Mandel. I miss the Burton Taylor phenomenon.
Let’s face it: The movie sucked, but the melody of this song lingers in the mind.
Yeah Jack Sheldon nailed it on the trumpet. One of the most beautiful melodies ever written; this and "Stardust"
Magnifique film interprété par deux acteurs inoubliables. Merveilleuse musique.
Still listen to this beautiful theme song it’s 2022now❣️🎵We used to camp down at Big Sur & visited Nepenthe, gallery where the beautiful wood sculpture of Elizabeth Taylor was 👏❣️
The best things about this film: Elizabeth Taylor is very attractive (so-so acting job though); the photography, especially of California's Big Sur and the Central Coast; Eva Marie Saint's performance; the song "The Shadow of Your Smile" (listen to Tony Bennett's version)
Great movie
We used to camp in the Big Sur area during the ‘60s . Saw that beautiful wooden hand carved bust of Liz Taylor that was in the film in the artists gallery.❣️
I appreciate for sharing beautiful music and video.
Big Sur is sooooo cool, and so is Johnny Mandel's music. I was born and raised in this. BTW, I also like this film.
Beautiful! Thank you very much, Chenarch, for posting this!
Thank you thank you this makes me happy- I’m watching the movie again but now I know I have this as a back up happy place
I once believe that I read somewhere that the only musical direction for Jack Sheldon on trumpet consisted of only one word - "MILES." Can anyone verify this for me. That soundtrack changed my life in 1965.
Top 10opening film score songs or music!
Hearing this through Liz's eyes❤
Beautiful music....💙💙💙
Great photography of BIG SUR.. once my favorite spot on earth-- the great music of Johnny Mandel. The movie a little dull. Would have been fun to party at Nepenthe with Liz... heaven knows I tied on one or two there -- it's that WINE!!!!
evocative and so endlessly chic Johnny Mandel? They broke the mould.
Beautiful
Minha trilha favorita!
Espero voce conhecer o melhor do Brasil agora: Daniel Boaventura e Bruno Alvarez (Pianista) ? Ola de Vancouver Canada.
Yes!!! Thank you!!!
magical . . . . . .
c est doux. beau..romantique..merveilleux💖💖💖
The only distinguished part of the film. Johnny Mandel was just the greatest. The cinematography (from a helicopter) by Milton Krasner was superb, as well.
classic beauty - & Music
Liz to Burton on the beach during their forbidden multi-day fling: "Is this what married love is like?" Burton: "Yes." Liz: "I hate her." Great line and great delivery and intonation/timbre by Liz.
Great theme and rather puzzling film which uses seascapes to tremendous effect.
Thanks heaps. :)
I had the please of flying over that bridge. I cry every time I play the music. Absolutely one of the best soundtracks that I heard. If you like movies soundtracks, opening movie music try these soundtracks: theme to Hawaian (starring Charleston Heston), my spelling is terrible, but here is another one, theme to the movie, the 7th Dawn (William Holden, and Capucin), apology if I spelled her name wrong.
great music,great Teylor&Burton
So nice of a movie.
Jennifer 86010: AGREE 🙋♀️😷. Imagine the luxury of having time to sit at the ocean and paint, with the feeling the Greeks call CHORIS THLIPSI. I live 3 blocks from Pacific but time to do more than walk by eludes. I love how you described the music & visual impact.
I can say the same. Thank you!
If only Big Sur and Carmel weren't so overpriced and overcrowded.. Love the Central Coast...
For sure! You should see prices in Vancouver BC. My land & house doubled in past 3 years..........but very few great neighbors and views elsewhere so all just stay......besides, money doesn’t hug you back. 🙋♀️😷
Fast fact ... back in the day ... many would have gone to see the Burtons read the telephone book ... remember ... many was the time, when the anticipation of the film/s overshadowed the finished production
but who cared .... !!
I've never seen the movie but this makes it very tempting.
Don't bother - it stinks!
Beautiful song, The Shadow of Your Smile known as Love Theme written by
Johnny Mandel. A cover sung also by Engelbert Humperdinck
this is a fabulous opening to a very fine but forgettable movie. love jack sheldon's trumpet.
+berger meister To you unforgettable..... for me timeless and unforetable.
Forgettable? Oh hardly -- indelible for its sheer awfulness. Compelling, even! Just love it. And do agree incredible opening sequence, which makes what's to follow all the more, I don't know, words fail me ...
The film is forgettable but music, scenery and Taylor's beauty absolute perfection!
I recall sleeping in my car at Pheiffer (SP?) Beach and cleaning up in the ocean... that's back when you could do it.. I'd walk to Nepenthe and waddle back to the Beach at night ----
Those days are gone.
And Jack Sheldon.
