  • Winter 2021 #4 - A one way trip to the summit of East peak via South ridge.
Walking conditions : Tracks, footpads and interpretative navigation.
Walk length : About 9 km one way. 1000 metre height gain.
Notes : The path of least resistance to East peak. A marked footpad leads up South ridge to the rainforest saddle and hut site. East peak (200m higher), is then approached by various means, with footpads and open rock scrambling to choose from. The 2019 fires have cleared the scrub out considerably, so navigation is mostly visual. After passing many false summits, the East peak summit is approached beyond a short cliff line at 1300 metres. The summit area is recovering from the fires and 360 degree views are plentiful. To return along the inward path is the most gentle route. Many people descend South East ridge, but be careful of the false trails.
