  • Have you ever heard of condor? In this video for kids, we will discuss interesting facts and characteristics of this large predator. Follow along with the high-interest reading lesson plan on our website! Condors are large black birds with triangular patches of white on the underside of its wings. They have the largest wingspan of any North American birds. In fact, sometimes they are mistaken for small, distant airplanes.
Usually, the males are smaller than females when it comes to birds of prey. But with condors, it's the opposite. The females a little smaller, but not by too much. These birds weigh about 20 pounds! The head and neck of a condor are bald, which is an adaptation for hygiene. When they're high in the sky, the UV rays of the sun disinfects their skin. This makes them resistant to disease and infection! Depending on the bird's mood, its skin color ranges in color. Plus, the changing skin color is a way for them to communicate with other condors.
Wild condors can travel up to 150 miles a day for food. They eat carrion, which is the decaying carcass of a dead animal. They prefer large animals like horses, cows, and mountain lions. But they aren't too picky. They will feast on smaller animals if they need to. Given that their meal is dead, you would think it would smell really bad. But condors have no sense of smell!
