Why nearly EVERY shonen anime follows this pattern

  • I've always wondered why so many of the most popular shonen anime, like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan, etc. all follow a similar concept: a teenager joins an organization to fight dangerous monsters. It's just like Bleach. Even though I'd argue Naruto and One Piece--the other members of the big three--are more popular and have made a larger cultural impact, Bleach is much more influential to how shonen manga and anime are written. This is the Bleach-ification of modern shonen anime.

people don't understand what big 3 means. it's a title given to them for breaking cultural barriers in a time when anime wasn't seen as a viable medium in the west. there is no universe where bleach isn't big 3.

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 Před 9 měsíci

I thought Pokemon, DBZ, & Sailor Moon broke those barriers! As for One Piece didn't it fail Stateside back in 2005? Naruto was Toonami's Golden Boy starting September 2005, although I remember Zatch Bell being quite popular before it. Yugioh was huge back in the early 2000s as well. Naruto, Bleach, & One Piece were late to show, the Anime Boom was during the latter half of the 90s. As for Bleach being part of the Big 3, I have a better question why was there a Big 3 to begin with & what decided them? 4 was an unlucky number, & I guess a Big 5 was considered too much.
There was a GameCube fighting game that featured DBZ, One Piece, & Naruto which was probably where the narrative of those being the Big 3 & Bleach being removed from the group started. Although Bleach may have been absent from that Game because it started later than Naruto & One Piece in Japan.
What Dragon Ball was for One Piece & Naruto, Bleach has been for many modern series & even then Bleach took much more from Yu Yu Hakusho & Saint Seiya. Naruto has some influence as seen with My Hero Academia as well. One Piece I think may be something that can't possibly ever get a successful successor, it's too different & looking back at its formula it was lucky to have started when it did as I don't think the early chapters could have succeeded in today's landscape. One Piece's Story just takes way too long to get started.

5:50 I do like the Fullbringer arc. It's so underrated because people don't understand how crucial it is. Ichigo literally learns to rely on his Hollow powers. You know, the thing he dreaded and almost got killed several times because he didn't want to use them after he first "turned" against Byakuya right after saving Rukia? The part of himself that he was scared shitless of? Yeah, he mastered using it during that arc. That's part of the reason why after he finally learned about his origins, all the Asauchis kneeled before him in the TYBW arc. The Shinigami-Asauchi relationship is mutual. When he was first dropped in the pit, he was still blaming himself for not protecting his mother, so the Asauchis were angry at him too. When he was dropped again 4 days later (72h in the pit + a day in the world of the living), he was at peace with himself and the Asauchi behavior reflected that. If he hadn't completed his Fullbring training, he never would've been at peace then. He'd still be scared of what White might do.
(As a bonus, he also learned to fight without relying on his eyes after Ginjo kindly slashed them for him 🥲.)

Maybe it's my limited knowledge of only around a 100 mangas total, so I missed a whole lot of earlier totally op posers, but to me it felt like ever since Aizen happened, it is almost mandatory to have at least one in every shounen like manga. So even if Bleach didn't invent this trope, I feel like at least contributed hugely to popularise it

Bleach has also taken inspiration from Saint Seiya more so than Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho was not the first to have a person fighting spirits, and the plot structure and captains come from Saint Seiya. This comes from the limited perspective that misses important manga like Ring ni Kakero, Kinnikuman and Saint Seiya don't have localizations or are failed localizations. But I do agree that Bleach is pretty influential as it brought it to a Post-DBZ manga landscape.

It is funny that while Bleach is the one that popularize the MC being a part of an organization while having the power of the monster said organization is fighting, it is also the first to divert from that very formula. Ichigo turns out to be a part of everything therefore act as a symbol that everyone can co-exist in harmony yet at the same time he doesn't really belong to any faction. He's quite aggressive in rejecting being a soul reaper in the beginning. Even by the end of series Renji still calls him an outsider of the soul society. He also doesn't take much pride in associating himself with the vizoreds nor the fullbringers and instead proclaimed to be "using" them in order to achieve his personal goal.

There is one other aspect of Bleach that I think makes it very inspirational to new writers, and that's how it implants a ton of meaning into it's meta narrative. This is to say every main character we see brings up certain philosophical themes that are built upon by other characters as the story goes on. To better understand what I mean, let's look at Naruto.
In Naruto, the Pain arc serves as a clarification of themes that the show had been building in the background. From the very start, we had seen that this was a warring world, where children were trained as soldiers to fight and kill for their nations. But that was always in the background, just the circumstances in which the main plot would drive forward. But then Pain comes. This villain who explicitly confronts our MC about the blatant nature of the world. And our MC struggles to answer that confrontation. This is a moment considered by many Naruto fans to be the peak of the series, and rightly so. We have just had the entire meaning of the story recontextualised, and changed what our MC's goal is from now on. He doesn't just want to be hokage, he wants to change the world. And later on, Sasuke's story becomes a part of this theme.
That is one example of how Naruto constructs a meta narrative, and builds upon it with it's main characters and villians and their individual stories.
Bleach does all of this, but to an even greater extent, and with far more subtlety. From the very first arc, we are introduced to themes and concepts that are expanded upon, deconstructed and reconstructed throughout the entire series. Duty. Death. The Ego. The ID. Self-Acceptance. Fear. Courage. Vengeance. Justice. Addiction. Memories. Self-Identity. Love. Loneliness. Science. Nietzscheism. All these and more are represented as ideologies and philosophies of every character. Even more so, each characters story with their ideologies are built upon and / or opposed by other characters. Let's just look at 1 concept bleach explores: vengeance and justice.
Tosen and Gin both followed Aizen out of a desire for revenge. They both desired vengeance for a person they loved. Yet, Gin's love was still alive. He wanted to avenge the fact that she was forever hurt. So he abandoned her to pursue that vengeance. And so, he spent his entire life missing out on being with the person he loved, all the way up until the object of his vengeance killed him. But why would Gin throw away his entire life for this? What could compel a man to pursue something so relentlessly? As it turns out, we had been getting the answer from Tosen since the moment he was introduced: Justice.
Tosen himself desired revenge for a person who had been taken from him. Unlike Gin, there was no person he could choose to still continue on with. So he proceeded with his plan for vengeance, until most unexpectedly, a possible new life opened up before him: He realized he could actually feel content and peace in the organization that had killed his loved one. And we see how much self-hatred this creates in him. How could he leave the murder of his friend unanswered? So Tosen began to tell himself that what he was seeking wasn't vengeance, but justice. And in the pursuit of that justice, he lost everything.
This tradgedy is later repeated with Sajin. Sajin, who had previously reprimanded Tosen for his vengenace, now threw away his own life, all in the name of avenging Yamamoto. And it's only as Sajin lay on the cold ground, losing his literal humanity, that he fully understands what Tosen sought. They all truly sought justice.
These 3 characters provide us not with a story, but with a _discourse_ on the nature of vengence, and personal justice.... And where have we heard talk of justice before? Oh yes, between Yamamoto, Kyoraku and Ukitake, all the way back in the SS arc. And that leads into the fact that that entire arc was about our main MC looking to change the justice of the soul society - a justice that was literally being controlled by the main villian.
What all of this shows, is that nearly every single ideology in Bleach is interconnected. We aren't taught lessons, we are given explorations of what it means to be human. This makes Bleach deeply rewatchable as you gain a better understanding of what drives it's characters. One Piece is also amazing with this, but I think Bleach simply has more variety of themes. And it's in no small part due to how it's got so many well written characters. I believe it is this depth of meaning that attracts new writers to Bleach.
TLDR: Bleach is mad deep bro.

The thing about Bleach is that to really understand it you need to pay close attention, because Kubo drops hints that aren't very obvious which I think is pretty cool.
In the soul society arc we're introduced to the captains and lieutenants along with some other characters but most importantly old man zangetsu and hollow Ichigo.
Some key things about the soul society arc are Aizen and Ichigos powers. Some of the best writing I've seen is Ichigos character development and how he interacts with old man zangetsu and hollow Ichigo. Ichigo learns to obtain bankai by using a device created by Kisuke Urahara that draws out his zanpakuto spirit which we know is white(hollow Ichigo) but old man zangetsu appeared instead, interesting huh? Something more interesting that NOBODY questions is that we never really saw Ichigo learn bankai which is very important.
When hollow Ichigo appears for the first time while Ichigo fights Byakuya it doesn't make sense if you think about it. White is his zanpakuto spirit, he is the bankai so how is he using the bankai?Well that's because Ichigo was not using bankai but rather his quincy powers, even his outfit looks similar to old man zangetsu in 'bankai'.
When Ichigo wants to learn to control his hollow by having the visors help him the one that appears when he enters his inner world is not old man zangetsu but rather white, this is explained by white he says that him and old man zangetsu share the same body and that old man zangetsu was the one in control but ever since Ichigo started using his soul reaper powers (not rukias) when he did his training with Urahara white slowly became more powerful and started to become the one in control. This is proven by the fact that Ichigo had a hollow mask on when he finished his training to use his soul reaper powers with Urahara. In other words, Ichigos soul reaper powers and hollow powers are one in the same they're mixed together naturally unlike the visors for example, Shinji was a soul reaper that got hollow powers while Ichigo always had both from the beginning. Also, remember that white tells Ichigo directly that he is zangetsu more than once.
After Ichigo becomes the king and white the horse, white tells him that if he senses weakness he will take over. Now verses Ulquiorra Ichigo never showed weakness in that entire fight so white never appeared, even before Ulquiorra ran his hand through Ichigos chest, Ichigo still had the strength and will to get back up. However, when Ichigo fights Ulquiorra a second time things are different, we can see even before Ulquiorra shots a cero through his chest Ichigo wasn't moving at all and white took over not long after that and even healed Ichigo afterwards because white has high speed regeneration being a product of one of Aizen's experiments.
In the TYBW Ichigos learns white is actually his zanpakuto spirit, and old man zangetsu is his quincy powers. Now the interesting part here is that white never lied to Ichigo while old man zangetsu did. Kubo not only told us the truth and fooled not only Ichigo, but us as well but even revealed everything to Ichigo and us at the same time which dropping small hints along the way.

i get that there are a lot of similarities between hueco mundo and soul society arc but to me it still felt like its own thing. Soul society was ichigo diving into his soul reaper power (although it was actually his quincy power) and then discovering his hollow power which leads to him learning hollow power in arrancar arc. Personally i think espada like grimmjow, ulquiorra and stark are still very amazing characters and we have known them for quite a while. stark we have known a bit less but he is still a good character imo and his death + ulquiorra's made me quite emotional.
Also fullbring arc is not that bad in the manga, i think its good. The anime drags a bit so the psychological mystery/horror aspect doesnt stay all the way, but ginji's betrayal and tsukishima playing with ichigo's family are still amazing moments. and its also pretty important for ichigo's character as well as how he gets his power back

Worth noting that there's a VERY high chance that most of these manga artists grew up on some iteration of Kamen Rider, a half century old superhero franchise where the main heroes always derive their abilities from the same monsters they fight.
Or even the nearly as old Gundam franchise. The 'Captain" power scaling, even down to their often very unique powersets, is ostensibly an adaptation of how ace and high ranking pilots often have exclusive access to high-end and/or specialized mechs.
Point is, while I've a somewhat hard time believing so many rising creators are somehow all directly inspired by Bleach, the tropes and structures have been around so long that there's no way they could've avoided running into some version of them at some point.

Great video, but I'm actually gonna rep for Fullbring here rq. Fullbring imo is one of the better arcs in the series, and the Bleach community has slowly been warming up to it too. It really gives us the chance to explore Ichigo's character, while expanding upon Chad and Orihime's powers that had always kind of just been shrugged off as Ichigo's spiritual power rubbing off on them in the form of the fullbringers, who unlike a lot of the Espada, had most of the arc to actually get to know and maybe care about. Not only that, while it does slow down immensely compared to the rest of the series, it uses this slower pace to build up mystery and suspense, such as the morality of Xcution or even what suspicious things Isshin and Urahara seem to be colluding to do. And Tsukishima was a great villain to the arc, with how he truly pushed Ichigo to his limit, for the first time ever making him want to kill out of actual anger, rather than by obligation or to protect. And the finale to the arc with Ginjo, the only person Ichigo had been relying on this entire arc to help him gain the power to protect his loved ones, betrays him and takes said power was written amazingly, and made Rukia stabbing him in order to reawaken his powers all the more impactful, and after the rest of the Gotei 13 show up, it doesn’t bother pretending the Fullbringers are stronger than they are and focuses on the actual main threats among them, being Ginjo and Tsukishima. The arc also ended on a good note, with Ichigo, despite what Ginjo had done, wanting to give him a proper burial in the world of the living thanks to their shared role. The only real part if the arc i'd criticize is the middle portion, since while it does let us get to know the fullbringers, at the same time it isn't exactly very memorable, unlike the more beginning and end parts of the arc.

Like I said before, great video, while i knew about the parallels Demon Slayer and JJK that they have to Bleach, with tons of them in the latter, i didn't realize just how much of an impact Bleach has had on many other modern shonen, even ones that felt like they had at best coincidences with it such as CSM.

    >not liking the Fullbring arc
It's awesome. Basically doing what could have been a whole new series for an arc after the climax of Fake Karakura was insanely ballsy, especially with a whole new intuitive power system that the new yokai/monster fighting series in WSJ could take notes on instead of just finding a new cool word to stand in for "ki." I love all the Fullbringers and how they use stranger powers rather than bigger ones to differentiate themselves. I like that it focuses on the otherwise-neglected human cast a lot and has more stakes than just "save the world."
I like Tsukishima as a villain for feeling borderline unbeatable in a way that felt Aizenesque without just ripping him off. I love Ginjo for being clearly introduced as a villain with the most bizarre gag in the series, and yet managing to win over Ichigo and most of the readers before he finally does the big reveal. I love that Ichigo is brought lower in the Fullbring arc than in any other arc, even Aizen and Yhwach couldn't leave Ichigo completely friendless and hopeless, resolving himself to commit murder rather than just leaving it as a vague "save [x]/I'll defeat the enemy." And even its shortness is honestly very refreshing, even the filler arcs drag a bit but the Fullbring Arc flies by too smoothly for anything to get on my nerves.
Basically, the Fullbring Arc might not be the best Bleach arc, but I still like it and as an arc it thrashes many modern shonen arcs in comparison. Dope channel, glad the algorithm's hitting you the right way, hope someday you'll write a "OK, The Fullbring Arc Is Good Actually" video and make your best friend Tsukishima happy.

There are two main stories in the Fullbring arc, Ichigo's regaining his shinigami power after losing it during the previous arc, as well as Ginjo's personal grudge towards the Gotei. The latter gets more interesting after reading the Bleach light novel 'Can't Fear Your Own World' because it explains in detail the reason behind Ginjo's rebel, as well more details regarding the origin of Fullbringers.

Lost Agent is fantastic.

Bleach always felt that it was for more mature audiences, but instead it was a bunch of pre-teens watching it when it was new. Now that I have watched it mutiple times as an adult 15yrs later its general messege has held up better than Naruto and other anime of my youth. Its up there with Nana . You can watch Bleach at different stages of your life and understand the themes better. The story was also more intentionally than the other 2 from the Big Three. Its nice to have an anime that does not walk you through what you are supposed to feel. But rather lets you find your own meaning and have aha moments during rewatches.

Bleach got the best villains of the big 3, the best theme exploration, the best side characters, and best of all Yoruichi. In all seriousness though, it's my favourite of the big 3 just for the purpose and progression of the show. Luffy's driving force is becoming Pirate King and protecting his friends. Naruto's driving force is becoming Hokage and protecting/saving his friends (I say saving because of Sasuke). Ichigo's driving force is... protecting his friends? Is that it? Well it's not. People say his motivation is weak for that very reason, but that's because they didn't understand the show.
Bleach is about finding yourself. Life isn't easy and there are many hurdles and downward spirals. Things won't always be sunshine and roses. You can lose what's dear to you (his mother) become depressed, lose your only hope of protecting what dear to you (losing his powers) work to regain the strength to protect, fail (he lost a good amount of fights) find support from those around you to get back on your feet, lose to your inner demons (vs Ulqiorra), lose to anxiety and fear (fake karakura town arc), fall into despair (fullbring arc), fail to protect anything and feel the extent of your weakness (Quincy invasion), and struggle to get through all of these things.
It doesn't sugar coat the journey of life, but Ichigo gets stronger every time he does a deep dive into his soul and finds resolution in himself. He becomes stronger when he learns more about himself. This is true for us as well. Once Ichigo stops rejecting part of him and reaches a state of coexistence by accepting every part of himself, weak or strong, good or bad, he reaches a level of strength far beyond what he could ever imagine. Like what a beautiful message.
And don't get me started on the side characters and their character arcs and their own issues. Justice is one of my favourite, Tosen, Komamura, Yamamoto, Aizen and Jin all contribute heavily to this theme. Mayuri is one of my favourite characters, his speech about perfection genuinely changed me as a person, no joke. I stopped striving for perfection as perfection is despair for humans. Instead I focus on improving everyday. Speaking of speeches, I lift heavier and more reps with White Zangetsu's instinct speech. It's chilling and introspective as hell. He's such a good character. I could go on and on, Byakuya, Rukia, Unohana, Kenpachi, Kyoraku, Orihime, Ukitake, Urahara, the list goes on. I'm honestly happy I didn't grow up with Bleach and instead waited until I was turning 16 to start it, the wait was well worth my time as I could understand the themes and character motivations, and also notice the little and subtle things in the animanga so much better.
Bleach has flaws, but is one of my favourite anime, and paved the way for great new gen like AOT, Black clover, The Dark Triad (CSM, JJK, HP) etc. Yet it's still somehow one of the most underrated and hidden gem shonen I know. Heck, I didn't watch it for so long because I used to hate the show just because of all the things people said about it. If you're reading this, give that one over hated anime a chance, it might just become your favourite of all time.

      @Lawly_  Před 9 měsíci +1

I think people ignore the changes he made on those around him and the world in general in bleach, but like I said, Ichigo represents coexistence and acceptance. That's why him, as someone who is part everything but doesn't directly align with any category, has such a big effect and change on the people and world around him. He's the epitome unity and represents the possible future in which everyone can live at peace

We just don't know it yet. In the rest of the anime, the monsters are the people inside the walls (the Jaegerists). So Eren actually becomes a monster twice in a way 🤔.
First, he can transform in a titan i.e. the "enemies" of Paradis. Later, he becomes a monster by commiting a worldwide genocide.

In my eyes, Naruto fumbles a lot with its scaling and a bit of inconsistency of themes through its characters, and I was not able to get into One Piece. As much as people praise it, the length, and overall tone for me is too goofy. I personally prefer bleach as well but that’s not a fact. Who has the better manga is subjective because of the different level of exposure of each series. Bleach was more mature and violent than the others so it didn’t get picked up buy Cartoon Network jetix or toonami until really late after the anime had gone off air in japan so that means the only way to see it was through adult swim giving it a niche more tight nit group of fan base than the others due to the facts that it’s not a series that could be easily censored like Naruto and one piece. This made bleach less marketable to kids cutting its audience in half.

Bleach's story is so underrated because most people will take bleach as another shonen where they expect ichigo to become a overpowered character trying to ensure his goals and the world goes around him, i took bleach as that and didnt really enjoy bleach as a whole because of the points you said like the 20 episode introductory, arrancar being another ss, and fullbring arc being trash, but my opinion changed completely after i rewatched it for the second time. i rewatched arrancar arc recently and started to take interest in these character analysis and after watching dbzimran i started to become very interested in the story and all the points that you listed became important aspects that i started to appreciate. For example i realized that the world of bleach is fucked up, ichigo in the world of bleach cant become ambiguous because attaining status in the world of bleach (mostly the afterlife) will set you up to another person's pawn and Ichigo was one of them. Ichigo despite being the protagonist is just another pawn for another person's ideology and the story doesnt surround him but rather the people around him and you'll then understand that the people ichigo is fighting for is no better than the villainm.Anyways, bleach is my personal favorite out of the big three because of its very dark and mysterious story and complex characters.

We can trace back this blueprint to Devilman too ! Becoming a half-man half-demon to fight other demons, the dark/edgy aesthetic... maybe it is even the origin of all, i don't know.

Maybe the reason Bleach seems more influential is because the concept is more portable and easier to clone? One Piece is really hard to replicate, because the concept is basically "Assemble of crew of unique individuals on a ship, then explore a huge world with powerful antagonists". You'd need to spend a lot of time fleshing out a large cast of characters, creating a really deep setting, and you'd also be competing with One Piece itself which is still running. Not to mention its freaking huge so it just takes a long time to build up the sense of "an epic, longrunning journey" that One Piece has. I don't feel like I've seen very many (if any) "One Piece clones" in recent years even though it's a very influential and culturally significant manga. Naruto I can't speak to as I haven't read/watched in detail.

I liked all the bleach arcs, and fullbring was amazing. I liked it because it was fresh to bleach, and the plot was interesting, and watching a shonen main character lose resolve in the way he did. it was all super well done. It begins ichigo's acceptance of himself, and shows how much hes matured since soul society. GInjo also served as an interesting fallen hero villain, which, fallen hero villains are some of the best in anime.

The lost agent shinigami arc felt like a thriller series and I liked the developpement Ichigo gets. At first it was weird after the whole aizen stuff about the soul king which later gets expanded and it was a great character arc for ichigo before the big war arc where his character peaks once again with the blade is me.

I recently read all of Bleach for the first time in last year (never watched the anime). I LOVED it. It was VERY flawed and my biggest complaints are the enormous supporting cast, dragged out fights, and that eventually every arc just has the same plot. But the art and characters still had me so invested and I'm a sucker for the "Superpowered Evil Side" trope
After Bleach, I went on to read Jujutsu Kaisen up to the introduction of the US and Chainsaw Man through the end of Part 1 and found myself feeling burnt out on all the repeated tropes. Of course they have their differences, but it was hard to ignore.

shoujo manga will never be popular in the west and that's by design. shounen is simply a "bigger" demographic, since people will always buy series with flashy fight scenes and cool characters. shounen battle manga will always be popular, regardless of how tired the genre becomes.
most western anime fans tend to think of shounen battle manga tropes when they think of anime/manga, and it's a shame because that's not accurate at all.
men tend to avoid shoujo because they think an ENTIRE DEMOGRAPHIC is made up of exclusively the romance genre. shoujo isn't popular because men won't read it, but if women want to read manga, we HAVE to read shounen because that will always be published, despite having several manga magazines made for women... it's a shame.

0:10 JJK does have "Captains" though, they're called Teachers 👀. I'm not that far in the story (because I'm anime only and haven't started season 2 yet), but the Principals look more like they're there to run the schools than to actually fight curses… Same thing for the elders. Perhaps the elders could be compared to Squad 0 🤔? They never fight alongside the "Captains" (Teachers), they only fight when the Soul King (the World or something?) is in danger?

No joke, fullbringer arc is top 3 arc in my opionon. Leaving necessarity for the plot aside, it's beautifully constructed, we have tension, we have emotions, to they point where Ichigo straight up considers murder. Everything slows down, the tone of the story becomes darker. Kubo has taken his work and turned it into a thriller/drama that keeps the suspense going until satysfying revelation, plus fight with Ginjo is visually stunning.

It seems like Bleach was the Dragon Ball of it's generation in terms of what it inspired. Sad that it didn't share the same kinda success, and that Kubo had to rush the ending.
For those who don't know Bleach being Big 3 was true in Japan for a short time but didn't remain popular over there. It's remained popular in the west but Shounen Jump operates off week to week sales in Japan, and other markets are not a factor. So when it dropped to 8th, 9th and eventually 11th most popular in the reader polls it got the axe.
Also Bleach is a the pioneer of anime drip because, Tite Kubo was literally fashion designer before he was a mangaka.

the ironic part about bleach that despite i respect the hell out of it for how infruential it is for the modern anime landscape, and pushed the eveloped on manga and anime art style. it was my least favorite from the big 3 because i never get into the characters or story (since it was mostly an excuse to find dragon ball battles), similar to the matrix i respect its impact i don't really have the need to revisit it like the other animes.

I have always felt that Bleach is for a mature audience, hence it's not as popular as the other two which are more lighthearted in terms of delivery. Watched and rewatched Bleach many times already and there are still moments where I needed to think deeply just to truly grasp what the mangaka was trying to say. It was satisfying yet disappointing at times because you're not sure if you really understood it the way the author wanted it to be understood. So I like it more than One Piece and Naruto because I like the mental gymnastics of it but I will also understand why many anime fans wouldn't choose this to be the better anime of the 3 because of the same reason.
