Dusty was something special in my generation, yes we were radical for those times, but Dusty was someone we listened to after walking along the beach collecting drift wood for our fire, fishing rods out, guitars strumming before a night with friends singing around the campfire we had made. Fish, steaks, potatoes, toast, lots of grog. The cops used to come down & make sure all were ok & sometimes they used to join us for a beer & a song. We always wondered into the ocean with our empty King Browns ( Big Beer Bottles ) fill them up with sea water & make sure the fires were out so that no one would burn their feet the next morning. Simple times as young people with great music. Sadly those times have gone because of a minority , to have a beer/wine now attracts a $200 fine. God help you if you light a fire. What can i say but. Once upon a time there was a tavern. Those were the days my friend.

+bob harrison I remember those days you speak of. Upon graduation we went to Alki Beach to celebrate a little, we had a little fire maybe some beer and soda, police came to check us out just once no hassles among us or from anyone else.... But about this song... when this song was out, young women were ladylike and not hanging all out for attention- their voices held you. girl groups, Eartha Kitt, Barbara Lewis, Barbara Mason, Dionne Warwick, Diane Renay, Mary Wells, and Petula Clark. There were many Folk music was on the rise and Aretha broke into the scene soon. Bless them all they brightened our lives didn't they?

Dusty Springfield, who had heard the Warwick album track, recorded "Wishin' and Hopin'" in January 1964 at Olympic Studios. (The eclectic list of musicians who recorded there include the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles) Personnel for the session included Bobby Graham on drums, Big Jim Sullivan on guitar, and the Breakaways vocal group. Ivor Raymonde arranged and conducted on the session.

Wishin' and hopin' and thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin' each night of his charms
That won't get you into his arms
So if you're lookin' to find love you can share
All you gotta do is hold him and kiss him and love him
And show him that you care
Show him that you care just for him
Do the things he likes to do
Wear your hair just for him, 'cause
    You won't get him
Thinkin' and a-prayin', wishin' and a-hopin'
'Cause wishin' and hopin' and thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin' his kisses will start

So if you're thinkin' of how great true love is
All you gotta do is hold him and kiss him and squeeze him and love him
    Yeah, just do it
And after you do, you will be his

That dress is, at first glance, deceptively simple. It is upon proper review, a breathtakingly exquisite wonder! I wouldn't be at all surprised if this were say, a Dior Couture. I would die and go to eternity a happy woman if I could have worn that dress in my prime to an appropriate occasion. I can't think of anything that would make me feel more alluring, more beautiful, more Feminine Devine!
    (WARNING!
    POLITICAL STATEMENT!
And yeah, because I hate being misunderstood and social media is so well known for that, I wish to point out I could just as easily have said Feminist as Feminine Devine but I chose the latter based on its poetic value and imagery potential, ok? There, that wasn’t so bad, was it?!)
    Ps:
But yeah, the song, no, just certain lyrics are cheesy, pop, and are now widely accepted as outmoded, even unethical, game playing techniques hopefully not used by or promoted to young girls today. But that pitch perfect golden voice?
Definitely an iconic sound of the day. She had a Singular Sound everyone loved.

Sorry to disappoint Kimberley but not all of us think the sentiments expressed in this song are outdated. I am one of those who still cherish traditional values and have no wish to abandon the ways of the natural order of our species that have served us well over many centuries. The social attitudes prevalent in the 1960’s represented the zenith of our social development as a nation and we’ve been on a descending trajectory ever since - as evidenced by the mess in which what is left of our society finds itself in today. Even now, as we make our way through the early 21st century, I still believe it’s not too late to turn back the clock and restore our society to it’s 1960’s heyday and strongly believe that this is what we should do. I fully endorse the traditionalist principles portayed here, live and conduct myself accordingly and would readily encourage other women to reject the socially destructive ideology of the era of “political correctness” and return to being what nature created us to be.
Where I do agree with you though is that Dusty Springfield was a truly remarkable talent. Many thousands of people have released records over the years, different types of music, different sounds and styles, each with their own indivdual attributes. It is a near impossible task to pick out just one person and definitively say "that is the best there has ever been" but in my opinion Dusty Springfield was that person. For me, she was the best singer ever to pick up a microphone and probably always will be. I don't expect to see anyone better in my lifetime.

Liza .1919 You have an interesting take on the 60’s, to be sure. Referring to the multi-faceted tumultuous upheaval of that decade calling for change all across the country as evidenced by scores of civil rights marches; NOW demonstrations where women were only asking for inclusion in (thereby gaining legal protections enjoyed from within) the Constitution & were finally ready to ask and work for what they needed in life, no longer content to merely follow someone else’s template for how they “ought” to live, they wanted a “choice” just like you do, and it was this desire for change which inevitably led to a dramatic rise in divorce because it refused to be met with reason or even compassion, so women decided they had to go; we suffered the shocking news of the Kent State shootings; riots and police actions against citizens, cities burned across this country for two solid years; numerous civil and voting rights reform legislation Finally passed after (only!) 100 years of so-called freedom; anti-Vietnam Nam war demonstrations on campuses and in cities everywhere on a weekly basis intended at educating the public & bringing our boys home from an unjust war in a place no one had ever heard of and couldn’t even find on a map, & for the first time in history more men were coming home without body parts or fully functioning mental faculties, many were also addicts as a result, but all in higher numbers than the actual death count, a “problem” our vets still face today only now the suicide rate is actually higher than the deaths by combat and today’s technology makes it seem so “easy” to just get new and improved arms or legs; then there were the assassinations of some of the greatest social reform leaders of the day, like President John F. Kennedy followed by his brother, Bobby, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers, some of which put the entire country in mourning, some sent people into a great downward spiral losing all hope, and some just got people real, real angry. So many, far too many, countless, nameless others who literally gave blood, sweat, tears, life, and limb to secure their rights for their children’s future. Would you do any different?
So when you called the 60’s “the heyday of social values” it was like hearing a brand new perspective for me. I’d be interested to know what you thought was so wonderful about this period as opposed to what was just swept under the carpet and kept hidden from others due to the very real fear of social stigmas, taboos, being labeled anti-social or just plain weird.
After all, if history has shown us anything it’s shown that being ostracized by society for not falling into line with the morays of the day can sometimes get you into trouble, seriously hurt, - or even killed.
Ps: I love me some Dusty, too, she’s iconic, but the best singer Ever? No. No, sorry, I can’t agree with you there. There are too many other very fine and talented singers. Are you even considering women like Barbra Streisand, Sarah Brightman, Celine Dion, Nina Simone, Maria Callas, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Joanie Mitchell, Billie Holiday, and I know I’m forgetting at least half a dozen of the more obvious greats?!
Look, everybody has a favorite, and I applaud that. If Dusty’s it for you, then that’s cool and I wouldn’t try to change your mind about your own tastes, I just wanted to check to see if you were holding up the spotlight on All the greats, is all.
You should check out Eva Cassidy if you haven’t. She has a crystal clear beautiful singing voice you might enjoy. She does a lovely version of Over The Rainbow! Enjoy!
