Straightening A Bent Chainring

  • I show how to repair a bent chainring (chainwheel) on a bike. I bought this bike used (A vintage Legnano), but it needed some work. The chainring was bent when I got it. The tools I used were a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a VAR Chainring Straightener tool. But the job could have been done with just the first couple tools. I could have used a travel dial indicator as well, but I don't currently have one. At worst, if I was not able to straighten the chainring, then I would just replace it.

    This is exactly the problem my dad's pre-1985 Peugeot P8 has. The big chainring is warped to the extent that the chain just shifts by itself between chainrings as you turn the cranks. The warping happened around 15 years ago and I was always scared about trying to fix it, but I might give your fix a shot. Thanks for the video!

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety +5

      +ECsponger2 Actually I think this is easier and faster since I didn't have to remove and install the chain rings. Also when bending metal like this, you usually have to have to bend the metal passed straight, because it will spring back some. So putting it between flat surfaces like that might not get it completely flat.

    talking about cranksets, it is oddly disturbing to find that the good ones that are like the one on this video are being replaced by a new design that was introduced a few years back, the ugly thing is that it has become really difficult to get the old type, specially if you are after a short 152mm crank arm that features 3 steps (3 gears/rings)... it is just difficult and perhaps a tad more than difficult, now prices, the prices can get to be oddly expensive, so one may end up having to buy the new system by force.... ggg not nice... the old system worked fine for decades and it was simple to customize the new one features a increased price that increases the cost of the vehicle to a point where more criminals are motivated to keep stealing bikes... gggg.... by the way please note that most crank lengths being sold are the 170mm and 175mm, this despite the fact that a ton, (more than half), of the riders are shorter, this being woman or men... this seems like a clear oversight of the ppl sourcing these parts.... ggggg the problem seems to be world wide....

    All fine and dandy until you have to fix the inner chainrings. If it's one of those riveted chainrings, then the only option is hammering or using very thin nosed pliers one tooth at a time. Particularly odious if the outer chainring has a non-removable (riveted) guard, as well. Yeah I know, the only real solution is replacing the whole shebang...

    @zegh8578 Před 3 lety

    How does a bend like this happen? I bought a fairly expensive bicycle a year ago, and just today it stopped working, all of a sudden, the pedals would kind of lock - the chain would fall off, and when I took a closer look, the middle of the three rings was totally wavy, and would constantly throw the chain off itself - for then to catch it back up again, with every turn of the pedal, untill it got jammed, and locked everything in place again (to unjam, i could simply pedal backwards, but it'd re-jam again almost instantly)
    I really expected a pricey bicycle to be able to handle mostly straight roads, without the components bending all over the place...

      You can try, but I think this method might be a little more accurate since you can spin the cranks and see deviation.

    Cheaper and less time using a new chainring.

    You really need to be careful doing this. I've bent a few and they actually came out nice. I'd just swap the chainring. It's really hard to get it straight.

    Bought a brand new Specialized Rockhopper and had a bent chainwheel straightaway. Crappy chinese production.

    Man, wish this was my issue. Mine has 3 gears and is new and the entire ring is bent.
    Good thing I got the dealer to give me 50% off, because the cost to get my bike road ready is ridiculous.
    Don’t buy a Chinese piece of crap, even if it’s all that is available.
