I think this might be my very first comment on CZcams. I watched this movie at the theater with my then boyfriend two years ago. We hadn’t even planned on going to the theater that day, and we bought the tickets so randomly we didn’t even know it was a French movie. But we ended up having so much fun and we loved the movie. I loved the song so much and kept listening to it on repeat for months after that then eventually sorta forgot about it. We broke up two months ago and I just found myself searching for the song and crying my heart out listening to it. I miss him so much it physically hurts my heart. We were together for 9 years. Idk why I’m writing this here but I just needed to share this with anyone.. I hope he’s doing better than me.
I hope everything gets better for you. This movie is so bitter sweet and painful...like all losses of our loved ones 😢
7 years for me! You are not alone.
Best wishes! You sound special.
Why have you broken up. What a waist. I.feel sorry for both of you. Any chances of restarting your love? Don't waist your life and spoil your future. Call that silly man back!
I sorry for that,, i’d recommend not watching this movie ever again cuz it’ll destroy you
I grew up thinking people really did this sort of thing in France, weeping and singing together in a cafe over a glass of vermouth....
I still do it.
All the time -- 24/7 ?
they do. vermouth and port has that sorta influence on people
If it's my last day alive, and I'm in France, and in a relationship - fuck it, it's happening. My last act.
Turns out they mostly run away from violent Algerians.
The voices were dubbed (as is often the case and nothing wrong with that) but for naturalism of the mouth and throat movements the actors were asked to sing along during filming. Michel Legrand said "they sang like crows".
Visually and musically the film was a work of art.
Still beautiful ❤❤
Crows are beautiful, too!
I think both actors were dubbed because they couldn’t sing. Singer Danielle Licari dub for Catherine Deneuve and singerJosé Bartel dub for Nino Castelnuovo (Italian actor originally).
Possibly the most beautiful couple ever on screen in possibly the most tender moment. I have lived with this music all my life. It’s still heartbreaking. This is not a movie, it is elevated beyond that. This is art.
we watched this movie in french class today, such a beautiful song.
Good practice...slow

🎉 I also saw it in college... It's a movie masterpiece "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" .. 🏆 VERY POWERFUL LOVE STORY THAT WAS TERRIBLY SAD.... CATHERINE DENEUVE BECAME A HUGE STAR IN FRANCE WHEN IT WAS RELEASED 🎉
What music… what emotions…
Captives me every time I watch this

I was living in Provence at that very time, and one of my dear friends, a beautiful young man called Henri, was so devastated at being conscripted to fight in Algeria, and I never saw him again. Don’t know what happened to him.
I'm so sorry for your loss
😢😢😢
LA LA Land doesn’t even come close to this masterpiece.
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling had the chemistry of golems compared to these two.
David Chazelle is a fan of this movie and he clearly took some elements of it for La La Land
In his film, Jacques Demy tackles a large number of important subjects in French society around 1960 : The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the first films to evoke the Algerian war (from 1954 to 1962), a taboo subject in France. Jacques Demy places the Algerian war at the center of Geneviève's misfortunes. Even if the war only appears implicitly, with Guy's departure, his letters and his return, it is still war that ultimately plays the leading role, determining the future of the two heroes. Very few French works give a place to this event, however significant in French history. The Algerian war is not mentioned in all its aspects, since it is not the subject of the film, but precise details are given, from the point of view of Guy, a French soldier: the long duration of military service, but also : « Last night a patrol was ambushed and three soldiers died » (the letter) - « A grenade attack was frequent » (the return) - « The sun and death travel together ».
So heart wrenching and beautiful!😢💔
This movy is the love of my life, y was 17 years old and my dear love called Guely was 15 Now Y have 73 and still remenber Guely from this movie
Masterpiece of a movie. First saw this movie 27 years ago. It has stayed on my mind since.
I was so happy he found someone
Legrand was born in Paris to his father, Raymond Legrand, who was himself a conductor and composer, and his mother, Marcelle Ter-Mikaëlian, who was the sister of conductor Jacques Hélian.Raymond and Marcelle were married in 1929
I recently completed a book titled 'Love From Paris' and the characters from the story who are Emmanuelle and Henry reminded me of both of the characters in this movie....such beautiful love stories❤️😢

Bellísima música.
Great film but very sad
What a movie this is! And who can hear this song with dry eyes?
Not me..
Guy :
Tu m’oublieras !
Guy :
Je t’aimerai jusqu’à la fin de ma vie !
Geneviève :
Guy, je t’aime !
Ne me quitte pas ...
Mon Amour, ne me laisse pas !
Guy :
Viens !
Viens, mon Amour !
Mon Amour !
Bonjour!
This is my guilty pleasure, sometimes leading to shedding a tear. And I don't even speak French!
I can understand 100% without a translation.
@@Kitiwake it means your French teacher taught you well 😃😃
"Une comédie"? C'est un drame, je pense.

The irony is she's worried she'd miss him; not that he'd be killed or wounded in war.
Beautiful.
I hv listen to Andy Williams version, and many versions of just music like Mantovani since the 1970... thank for sharing, only today i know it's from a French film
In this movie, there's no talking at all!. Everyone's singing all through the movie. But this piece is the most heart catching.

A film, that should never been translated to English ❤❤❤ so beautiful ❤❤❤ 🇬🇧 🇫🇷
The desperation of Genevieve is clearly shown in this memorable scene. Guy dodged a cannon ball, not a bullet. And his wife is SO lovely, still deeply in love, but her own person. The last scene of the film shows the vacant shell that she has become in a few short years, while Guy is determined to be happy with his new life. And by the way, "waiting forever" is hardly what Deneuve's character did. She married another man within a year. NEITHER of those two were in love with each other.
0:39 the umbrella (le parapluie) catches his hair
Ok idk what the fuck how didn't I know about this movie I can't get it out of my head
This song sounds better in French. The English version sounds heavier and quite overblown in comparison 😊
Le Grand genius for composing a melody note for note and lyricist genius for translating word for you a song originally composed in Yiddish - genius even though melody and lyrics were written by older, fellow Jewish people.
Am sure your rabbi can give you some phone numbers to consult. Do NOT wait, you definitely need help ! :)
My father confirmed this with his cousin who composed The Man of LaMancha”. Didn’t need a rabbi - my dad needed a cousin who was a well known composer to look at the Yiddish sheet music he found in a specially store in the mid 1960s in New York. My cousin Mitch Leigh looked at the Yiddish public domain song on the sheet music and confirmed. Surprised but he confirmed
@BandintheUSA that's really interesting, what was the original song called? I'd like to look it up.
This is the voice of Danielle Licari, not Catherine Deneuve
I look for any indication of insincerity on her part... No. They were kids, she meant it, but she was just unable to make that commitment. His eventual disappointment must have been wrenching.
An interesting take on her nature.
Are all women like that, do you think?
I never found out, but I think so.
What commitment? Her mother was against them, she loved him. Her mother made her turn against her love since she heard nothing of him and thought how could she raise her baby by herself. The world was a so different back then. To be a single young mother out of wedlock? A catastrophe! The only thing she was able to think, also to protect the lover her life’s baby, was to marry a respectable decent man that adored her and would take care of them. The whole story is a tragedy about situation. They were in love and they would have been happy together, but the world takes us on different paths and we can’t always choose what will happen.
@@mkavonius I have the movie on dvd, and your assessment is correct. 💯💯💯

We were watching this classic film again the other day, but left somewhere in the middle, with many years since our last viewing. I forget what happened with the baby. Could someone fill me in…👶✨? Thanks!
They swear to love each other until the end, mostly her promising to never forget him, to wait for him. And he leaves for two years, when he comes back things have changed. They both move on. I recommend actually watching it. Don’t want to spoil too many details.
