  • Today I'm making a simple top by hacking a dress pattern into a top! The fabric is from Tessuti Fabrics and was a remnant - only 85cm! What do you think of the outcome?
    PATTERN: Burda 4005 c. 1994
    This pattern was my Mum's, but pretty much any dress pattern would work for this kind of hack.
    Fabric: navy linen, viscose, elastane blend from Tessuti Fabrics www.tessuti-sh...
    Buttons: from Spotlight www.spotlights...
    Overlocker thread: from The Remnant Warehouse theremnantware...

    My sewing machine is a Bernina B215 which isn't made anymore, but this machine is the closest one available now - Bernina B325:

    New fan from Québec. I am roughly at the same sewing level as you and one game changer item I bought is a mannequin. So much better than trying on myself! I also find that I can be more creative. This being, I love your videos and how you are not afraid to experiment.

    Sooo cute!! 💖💕Five buttons was definitely the way to go! Thanks for the great tips about the buttonholes. Being done with a project right before it's finished is so relatable, good on you for finishing it!!

    Great top Steph, I love the way this turned out.
    Tessuti is a fab store and a gorgeous remnant is irresistible.
    I find Burda so on trend in their magazine patterns, I subscribe and flick through each month. But never actually make any of them, sewjo MIA.

    I don’t know anything about sewing, but perhaps you could put two subtle darts in the back to create a bit more of a fitted shape? But the loose drapiness is lovely too

      I think I'm okay with the looseness too. I plan to make the full dress version soon so I'll tinker more with the fit then. Thanks for watching!

    ❤How fabulous that you can share patterns with your mum!!! I'll have to see if you've done a video on how you got started sewing. That would be very interesting. I bet mum's proud. (Burda is difficult for me. You did great!!! I hope you find more fabric. Pants would be perfect if the fabric would work; otherwise maybe a skirt or shorts? Beautiful job. So glad you did 5 buttons.) xxx ❤

    Thanks for the heads up about the seam allowance on Burda patterns. I've just bought one and didn't realise this important point!

    That looks lovely. I'd be inclined to look for a bit of navy grosgrain ribbon to make a tie for the back. The fabric looks luxurious and your finishing details are on point.

    5 buttons are great... looks much better, i.e. sophisticated... btw. Burda patterns are a a bit of a mess and they always turn out being too wide but too short. You really need to add some extra length at horizontal lines, if you don't have a standard (German) height (men=178 cm; women=168 ? cm). With Burda patterns, I started to baste the main parts together to check, if they actually fit before sewing and serging.

    • @WelcomeToSteph
      @WelcomeToSteph  Před měsícem +2

      Thanks for the tips on Burda patterns. I'm too impatient to baste but maybe I need to start 😅

    • @HerrnSchaf
      @HerrnSchaf Před měsícem

      @@WelcomeToSteph so do I ☺. I use my sewing machine for basting... longest stitch length and reduced thread tension... it's a compromise (hate basting 🤭)

    • @WelcomeToSteph
      @WelcomeToSteph  Před měsícem +1

      @HerrnSchaf oh that's how I baste too when I absolutely have to. I'm really impatient 😅😅

    Re: loose fit idk about contemporary patternmaking but the vintage ones r always gonna have WAY too much allowance for movement. When I was learning construction my very old teacher was telling me to ad an INCH at each side??!!! For a KNIT while actually I would need to subtract that amount from my body measurement instead. The rules were based off ppl not being used to jersey ig so people expected the freedom of movement we get from tshirts today. That’s my theory at least. So every pattern u assume was done in the times of ur parents definitely expect it to be extra loose and especially if ur extra tight on fabric don’t worry to sacrifice the allowances and don’t try too hard to make them even cuz I’ll most likely end up cutting them off at the end. Also re:cutting them off at the end - a good idea to actually start from fitting before you do any or at least most sewing (leave out the side seams and try the piece on) so u adjust the fit before finalizing the garment. I usually start with connecting the shoulder seams and if necessary attach some panels together but honestly it turns out best when I just pin it first so I know where to move those seams right from the beginning to avoid hours of unpacking and redoing

    What's the purpose of Burda not including a seam allowance?

    • @WelcomeToSteph
      @WelcomeToSteph  Před měsícem +1

      I have no idea!

    • @velvetvert9431
      @velvetvert9431 Před měsícem +2

      When you adjust a pattern you're not supposed to do it from the seam allowance but from the stitching lines, so this gives you the stitching lines if you're, say, blending between sizes. Also you may wish to add a different size of seam allowance depending on the seam finish you're planning, or you may need to skimp the seam allowances if you don't have quite enough fabric.

    • @WelcomeToSteph
      @WelcomeToSteph  Před měsícem

      The more you know! That must be why Burda also has different seam allowance to different components.
