- I show how to do the annual maintenance on my push mower. This includes changing Oil, Spark Plug & Air Filter on a Troy-Bilt TB110 push mower with a Briggs & Stratton 550EX engine.

I used an oil siphon and never considered tipping it over since you have to drain out all the gas. I use synthetic oil since it a better lube and want the mower to last. I also use an E3 Spark Plug which doesn't require gapping and lasts for many years. The muffler is the spark arrestor. You were smart to use the anti-seize, most people skip that step. What I have also learned is to lubricate the cables since having to had to replace both of them after they froze up over the years. I also learned to use some belt dressing on the drive belt. Thanks for your video.
What do you mean by lubing the cables and what are you considering to be a drive belt on this?
So here’s the problem with not having a drain plug for oil: Solids in the oil collect at the bottom of the case due to gravity, and fluid transfer pumps are ineffective at removing those solids (e.g., fine metal particulate, dirt). It’s more of an inconvenience, rather than a flaw in design, as you can just physically tilt or invert the unit to evacuate its old, dirty lube from its fill hole.

You can also add a little dielectic grease to the spark plug top to keep that protected and conductive
Thanks for this video. Exactly what I needed to know. I followed every step and was able to take a used mower I bought, which was this exact model, and perform the annual maintenance on it (with the help of my son). Bought this used mower from a neighbor at a great price so that I can give it to a needy family who has been using a weed trimmer to cut their entire lawn. Now I know that what I am giving them is in great shape and should hold up for them. Thanks again!!
Awesome! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I can't believe that all "Newer" mowers don't have an oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine. I have a 1999 Craftsman and a 2001 Craftsman push mower and they have the drain plugs as well as some of my buddies mowers have the drain plugs. I hate turning anything upside down that has a float; especially in the newer B&S plastic carbs.
Great video
Thanks! Stupid engineers. Screwing technicians over all the time because they don't have common sense.
@@becausestuffbreaks
Agreed; I could never figure that out or why the engineers moved the drain plug from the bottom center of the oil pan on a 2006 Chevy 4x4 to the side of the oil pan so that the oil would shoot out onto the passenger side wheel on a 2011 Chevy 4x4 but engineers are going to engineer I guess
Good point about draining oil on later Briggs&Stratton. About 3 years ago wasted better part of day searching for drain plug on Briggs&Stratton bought new just the previous Spring. Finally Googled the issue and discovered B&S decided that drain plug(on bottom of engine)was superfluous--on some models. Kinda' aggravating but your tips are very helpful in any case!
I have approx 300 hours of run time on this mower (7 years worth), and it still runs like a champ. The weed whacker (TB) was junk : lasted three weeks, and now I have had a straight shaft stihl, but the mower is great. Have given two tune ups so far, about to do a third. I use premium 93 Octane (10% ethanol) only - and the TB110 has done me just fine. I wish we had non ethanol fuel in PA.
I've had mine for 6 years now and still running great. I need to give it my 2nd tune up this year.
I'm in pa and non ethanol pumps in my area.
Well done! I'll bet this engine & mower will last for many more years, with this maintenance. Where I live, spring and autumn can be chilly, so I like 5W30 full syn oil. My Snapper with Briggs & Stratton older flathead style is a 2007 model, so it should have plenty more years to go. My son-in-law has an MTD like yours, same OHV engine, purchased in 2015, and I think the engine is quieter than my Snapper. Overall, I like that style of MTD mower like yours - not crazy expensive to purchase new, and with maintenance, it can give long service.
Straightforward and very clear presentation. Thank you for a very good explanation.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks man! I was looking everywhere for the oil drain plug and couldn't find one. The Briggs and Stratton website shows a dude using an oil siphon pump and a jug. Figured there had to be an easier way! Cheers!
That's odd that they would show someone with a siphon but in the manual, tell us to drain the gas and then drain the oil by tipping it over. Thanks for watching!
i live next to a cougar
thanks to this video i was able to fix her lawn mower and trim her bush
Nice
Same exact lawn mower as you but they put a model series a and b manual in mine and nothing else. Wouldn’t have been able to do the maintenance if it hadn’t been for your video. Thank you.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for taking the time to explain each step in detail...this video was very informative for me.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I did it all by myself! Now I know how to do it & can maintain it every year!
Sweet! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for this video! It was tremendously helpful. Especially because regardless of the price, I keep everything that serves a purpose in top shape.
That's good. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for the tips. She’s up and running like new and I now know how to do a routine maintenance.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and glad I could help.
Nice video. Just a note though. You should always leave both wheels on the ground when you drain the oil out by tipping it on it's side. If you lift the back wheels off the floor the oil will run toward the front of the crank case and you will wind up leaving some of the old oil in the crank case.
+max98138 Thanks for the info.
Don't most of the Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engines have an oil plug in the bottom of the engine near the blade?
I wish this one did. I show in the video where the manual tells you how to drain the oil.
Ah understood. Didn't realize some didn't have the plug in the bottom.
Thank you for this very helpful video. It always amazes me when trolls feel like they need to post negative comments that don't help anyone. Pathetic, lost souls.
Kenneth well if you knew anything about engines or mechanics in general, you would know that literally every single thing he does in this video other than torquing the plug is totally wrong or just poor advice
You could also use an "Siphon pump" to pump out the oil. Seems a little easier than tilting the mower on its side. Either way it gets the job done! lol
Thanks for the Video!
+Matthew Groff good idea. I'll try that next time.
It would have to be a real skinny tub though. I have the same mower and tried to use my little siphon pump that I have and the tube is too thick to get down in there.
If you have the right tools, parts, and know-how; it’s super easy! If you don’t then it’s a major PITA.
Thanks for the video! couldn't find the manual you referenced on the troy bilt website so this was very helpful.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
You can also remove the top cover and then the gas tank just pulls right off. Gives you just enough play in the hose to tip the gas out. Just be careful you don't stress the hose too much
Ok. Thanks for watching!
@@becausestuffbreaks Thank you! Haven't really done anything with small motors before. Just really didn't want to start it up this year without servicing it first. Got the mower for my mom 9 years ago and she literally never serviced it and it's still running completely fine. That oil was like syrup 😅
Lol, I haven't serviced mine since I made the video. I need to get it done also.
Thanks for showing a disabled woman.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
If you let the engine run for a minute or two before you change the oil it will Stur up more of the oil sitting on the bottom and it will come out quicker
FYI for people using NGK spark plugs, NGK actually recommends that you DONT apply anti sieze as used in the video here. Just check the gap and screw it in.
You're right. I recently learned that also. I'm going to see if I can cut the antiseize part out of this video. Thanks for watching!
Thanks man! Im going to do all this to my TB 200. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching!
Great! Just did all these after my same lawnmower did not start! But not after I tried more than 100 times!
So... is it working now?
Justin Peters , oh yeah! Great 👍!
@@andyhuang7526 so what was the cause!??
@@code_games634 if you change the oil and filter, spark plugs, the last thing is the bad gasoline!
@@andyhuang7526 hmm and how do you change that out. Because my filter is still good, looks like a lil gas patch on it but that might be Normal. Changed spark plug today..Nothing. Oil is still light looking. Mower is still fairly new 1yr. but won’t start now. Blade deck is filthy though with last year’s junk under. Maybe a lil old mixed with 2 month old gas still in it.
I prefer to remove the Starter Rope from the Handle, Shorten it slightly so it retracts completely inside the housing. If this is'nt done, the rope will quickly deteriorate and break.
Also you don’t need to “change the spark plug every year” just clean it and put it back in it should last 3 years
Great video and thank you for the guidance!
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I liked your video! Thanks for doing it. I changed my spark plug, filter, and used some starter fluid to get my lawn mower going. I had the old gas in there since then! Anyways next step is changing the oil. I’ve watched a bunch of videos. Liked yours the best!
Awesome! Thanks for watching. I had trouble starting mine this year but got it going.
Thanks for the video, good job. Just a tip; when I take my spark plug in/out I use a small extension on my socket. It saves the knuckles.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video. Off to buy oil, etc. Wish me luck!
Good Luck!!
Why do we have to turn the mower on its side? Thanks troy built for not designing a better drain method. Good video bro.
I agree. Guess that's mechanical engineering for you. Guess nobody decided to ask a maintenance technician to look it over at any point.
Great video man! I actually got a good chuckle at all the keyboard warriors here pointing out very minor faults. They must be pro youtubers and mechanics looking up how to service their mower! 😂
Lol. Thanks for watching!
great video, it's very useful!
+Apna Satish thanks.
You can use an oil extractor instead of tipping it over
Thanks!! I'm a female and I CAN DO THIS!!!!!
Sweet! Let me know how it goes. Don't use the silver anti-seize I used. Use spark plug anti-seize.
Tracey Carpenter lol, and they've even sent a couple of y'all to Space too.
of course you can, why do you feel the need to tell everyone....
WHYWHYWHY she’s obviously saying she can do it yet some men can’t
Do you have video on how to clean the carburetor on this model lawn mower thank you
Nope. Haven't had to do that yet.
There are a few on here explaining how that's done,in fact I just cleaned out the carburetor on one I have like this one and it runs fine now, main thing is to be very careful as these are all plastic and easily broken.
This was helpful!! Thanks man!!
You're welcome! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
It would be nice to list what air filter was used...NGK plug as OEM for lawnmower? Skeptical.
I have an Amazon shopping list link of parts and tools in the description.
nice and simple. Thanks
+Martín Harvey glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Very helpful
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I forgot to empty the gas. But it is running. Thevgas cap was on.
Is emptying the gas more of a precautionary thing?
Yes. Just a precaution to prevent spilling.
That yell at the end lmao
Lol, thanks for watching!
Great video I have this same mower. What site do you order your parts from? Thx
Link to the parts is in the description. Let me know what you get and if you have any issues.
I missed the air filters replacement
It's in there, but I remade the video, and it's impossible to miss in this one: czcams.com/video/pzsu3A5UpB8/video.html
I hit something with my lawn mower so not thinking, I had turned it on the side as you did and then some liquid leaked out where the air filter is what is it???? Please I need to cut the grass
Does it smell like gas or feel oily? If it's oil you will probably need to replace the air filter and take out your spark plug and wipe it off. It will probably run rough and be smoky until the oil gets out of the system. If it's gas, you may have to let it set for a couple hours with the air filter off and spark plug out to let all the extra gas evaporate. You can also just try starting it and see what happens. The liquid isn't anything bad.
Just tip it on its side to change the oil. Otherwise the the air will get blocked and it won’t flow right
Do you know if the 280 es Lawn mower has an oil / drain plug? Thanks.
No clue. Just look around the base of the engine and look under it to see if there's a plug.
What kind of oil did it come with? I’ve forgotten what oil I’m supposed to use. I’m thinking about switching over to 10w-30
I show in the video what the manual says and what I bought. I don't remember off the top of my head.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, I saw it too late and I drained the oil with fuel in the tank, which you wisely recommend against. Half way through mowing, after the maintenance, I took a break and it would not start after. I pulled the spark plug and a bunch of fuel came out of that hole. The spark plug is black on the gap end. Any suggestions on what to do next?
You can go ahead and drain the fuel and keep the cap off and keep the spark plug out. Let it sit for a couple hours. Then pull the starter slowly a couple times. Then put the spark plug back in and pull the start cable a dozen times like you're trying to start it. It might fire and get the excess fuel in the system out. Then put the fuel back and try to start. Let me know if that works.
Justin Peters It worked like a charm! I followed your steps and it started! It blew white smoke for a while and then worked normally! I really appreciate it!
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I overfilled my oil, still have gas in tank, blowing white smoke...yada yada yada. I’m gonna use these tips and see if I can fix it up. Thanks! Fingers crossed I have luck like this guy!!
Good luck! Since you overfilled the oil, make sure you drain the excess oil out also.
I changed the spark plug, oil filter, oil changed, new cutting blade . For two years I have had to spray starting fluid in the air filter housing it order doe it to start. Smh ! What do you think could be the problem ? I did cleaned the carburetor two years ago but it did not help, so I continued to spray starting fluid to this day. Smh.
Hmm, sounds like a carburetor issue. I can't think of anything else you can try.
@@becausestuffbreaks i think I found out what the problem is, I hope. There s a vdo in stevesmallenginesalon channel on this issue. I just checked my engine is cold and the little metal flap where the air filter is if you remove air filter their little flap is actually open a little bit and it should be completely closed
I found you have to tilt the mower as you are showing because their is NO WAY you can get the oil plug out from the bottom of the engine. They welded a stupid bar right over top of the oil plug. Engineering at its best.
Engineers. Why do smart people lack obvious common sense?
Thanks, this was a big help.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I had no idea gap made a difference in the performance of a spark plug
The little boy looks like he could use a tasty cheese burger. Buy him 4 to go....HAA...HAA...HAAA. By the way, great job changing the oil of that lawnmower. You to can take 4 more to go.
Lol
there should be a plug on the bottom to drain the oil
+John Stpierre that was what I expected but they didn't put one there. I'll quote the manual, "The oil must be drained from the top oil fill tube (E, Figure 10)." Here's another one, "When you drain the oil from the top oil fill tube, the fuel tank must be empty or fuel can leak out and result in a fire or explosion."
Dear god, i thought i was crazy. I'm sitting in my driveway changing all the bolts on the bottom and yea none of them were oil. also read the manual and thought "this can't be right" good god its a crappy way to do it, so the engine has to be warm but warns you about gas dripping -_- all seems like one big mess. None the less thanks for the video it clears things up!
+Shane Holmes glad I could help.
Maybe the fluid clogged up the fuel line ?
Great video, any specific reason why your using a NGK plug? What was your original plug brand and part number? I was given a TB115 550EX series, 9000 model with a Autolite plug which I think is incorrect?? But have no manual. At 6:34 I see resistor plug 692???
+Timothy Green I went with NGK because that was the only one AutoZone had. When I get home I'll look at the original spark plug and send you that info. Here's the 3 part numbers from my manual:
F5RTC
RC12YC
BPR5ES
+Timothy Green the original spark plug says
CHAMPION
RC12YC
Thanks
I have the same mower, I wonder if TB makes a muffler guard attachment for my 3 year old model, got burnt on it one day while cleaning it.
Great video! Will that NGK spark plug work in my troybilt TB200 self propelled mower?
Not sure. Thanks for watching!
If it's the style of engine yes it will
Did I miss part with the air filter?
Yes you did. At 5:06
I need the pull starter assembly for this lawn mower how can I look for it or where can I buy one
If your lawn is now 3ft tall, you can get universal pull starters for the briggs engines on eBay. They fit but put the pull handle won't be the same (unless you move it over) and the handle will rest by the engine (not by the controls) unless you replace the cord with a longer one.
Parts manual is on Briggs & Stratton webpage for download. This will give you the correct part number for web search or ordering at your local dealer.
5:12 for Spark Plug
What’s the part number on the spark plug?
There's an Amazon shopping list in the description
@@becausestuffbreaks ah didn’t see that. Thanks.
The lawn mower spark- plug literally popped off the engine I have not touch my lawnmower, is this normal, ?
Nope. That is not normal. Did you look to see if it came unscrewed or broke?
I didn’t see you change the air filter
I thought that was the last thing I did?
Don't forget to drink old oil!!!
The oil must be drained from the bottom of the lawn mower. What you are showing is not correct.
This is correct. I even show the owners manual in the video telling to do it this way. There is no drain plug. Prove me wrong.
does it have an oil filter?
+Shades N' Shadows no.
How many ml's of oil does the 550 EX take?
440 ml
Well, I've goofed up. Single on a budget Mom here desperately trying to get the TB110 I bought last year to run. The mower will start if I manually prime it - I used a straw - but, then it shuts off. So, I took everything completely apart again and cleaned it all again ncluding the carburetor. Drained the gas and it now has new gas and new oil. The only problem is that there are these two thin metal rods that attach to the pull start system and the carburetor and for the life of me I can't figure out how they go back on! I should have taken a photo. I'm not sure which one goes where and how. I can't find any diagrams online. Help?
Mary I'm fixing to take my carb off mine to clean it tonight. I can send you a pic if you give me your email. That's the only way I know how to do it.
I don't torque plugs. Just snug em up.
I was the same until I made this video. Just wanted to show the proper way, according to the "engineers"
Which is the proper oil for this model?
SAE 30 any 30 weight winter rating usually does not apply for lawn mowers , so ignore 5w 10w , the next number 30 is what you need , i use left over oil from car oil changes
Not dirty , in case you read it wrong lol ,
You're going to damage you're engine, I use 10w30 sae api sn non detergent power plant oil I believe it's 4 cycle air cooled oil not automotive oil with detergent., I hope this help.,peace from Puerto Rico.
Did you even read the bottle? IT SAYS NON DETERGENT.
You know if the manufacture wasn't cutting corners on a drain plug , it would be less trouble changing oil with a drain plug on the bottom . Tight wads ......
Yep. Thanks for watching!
well said Marshall,,what idiot thought of deleting the drain plug,,I looked 3,4 times for the drain plug underneath..not there!!..WTF..ill make life harder by tipping the mower on its side..(shaking my head)...
you shouldn't use non detergent oil!!
+man9170 I didn't even notice that. Good catch! I'll make sure to use oil with detergent this year.
Did you get air filter at autozone?
I ordered it off Amazon
Oh ok. Thanks.
Which filter did you order? I’m working on my mower this week
Here's a 2 pack cheaper than ordering just 1.

Did he just call the socket a spark plug wrench? o.O
He called a feeler gauge a gapper?
