Carmelo got his start as an entrepreneur as a franchisee with College Pro. He built on that experience to start his own house painting franchise and grow it to 130 locations across North America. Find out how he started and scaled his business in this interview.
Starting through the College Pro program opened the door for Carmelo to become a business owner without a huge up-front investment. It also gave him hands-on experience in door-to-door sales and introduced him to the exterior house painting industry. He’ll share his biggest lessons from this first entrepreneurial venture, along with some surprising ways it’s helped him to grow Spray Net.
The key to Spray Net’s success is their unique painting techniques. Carmelo developed his own paint formula after being told by industry experts that what he wanted to do wasn’t possible. He’ll talk through the steps to develop his unique exterior painting solution and how it gives him an advantage over his competition.
Carmelo was still in school, and still running his College Pro franchise, while developing Spray Net. That’s a lot to juggle at once! He’ll share the strategies he used to stay organized and manage his time when he first launched the business. We’ll also hear how his day-to-day life has changed now that Spray Net is an international franchise. Organization and systems are just as important for a business as for its owner, and he’ll explain how he developed scalable, replicable systems that set Spray Net franchisees up for success.

I love this story! I'm a 30 plus year craftsperson and 60% of what I've done is residential painting and I am very impressed w this young man. I did things the way "it was always done" back in the day. I accidentally got into epoxy and specialized hvlp glazing and been happier w it since.

Now this is an excellent interview, well the last 2 were as well, but this is in my wheelhouse. I never get too much into painting unless it's for my established clients because there's always someone willing to undercut you on labor and use the cheapest possible products in my area. But he's changing the game by offering these custom products, so it's much much easier to sell your value proposition because he's already distanced himself from the competition. Great work all around on this one.

@@UpFlip for sure! My kitchen cabinets were a dated, dinged and slightly damaged. Had Spray-Net come quote us on painting them.... The team was great! They came in, and literally transformed my entire kitchen! headache free, fast and affordable. Pretty much a no brainer.I compared the pricing to replacing, and they were substantially cheaper...and the finish of the cabinets looked as if it were brand new!

I really enjoyed this episode. It is great seeing such different types of businesses (even if only out of curiosity rather than having an interest in being in such an industry) and I really appreciate that you make an effort to seek out such variety. I also really like this guy as he comes off as a very sensible person who has his head screwed on and also does not appear to be a hipster (something that always rubs me up the wrong way, lol) or a narcissist. Also, Paul...I loved how your face lit up when mentioning you have 3 children because yes, that is a big deal. How wonderful and god bless you.

Great interview 👍. One question. At 6:56 count on the video, you can see the painter spraying primer on the glass tile backsplash and electric plugs. Is that part of the cabinet resurfacing?
This is actually a different product from what we use on cabinets. Like all of our custom coatings, this one was specifically formulated for backsplashes which require specific properties. Not only does this coating have 100% adhesion on ceramic but also looks and feels like it. Same gloss, hardness, washability and water resistance!
That painter definitely should have covered up those plug sockets fully though ! This is what would worry me the most about franchising.. Hoping that everything is always as it should be, hoping that your distant teams are doing the right things all the time. Still, amazing you were able to come up with a coating that mimics ceramic so well. Amazing interview, sky is the limit for your team. @@SprayNetInc

Are they fixing existing roofs or painting. What is the roofing solution they are applying?
We have formulated a patent pending proprietary roof coating that adheres to existing asphalt shingled roofs and adds a new layer of granules to prolong its life as well as change its color. Not only does it reinforce the roof but it's done in a fraction of the time, cost and mess to replace a roof. Like all of our services, it's a more cost effective alternative to replacement.

Unfortunately our products are exclusively for our franchise partners and what gives them their competitive edge.
I’m wondering how a franchisee would go about if they need one more gallon to complete the project. They can’t just drive to a local paint store to order more paint.
Those scenarios are certainly covered in the training. They provide a comprehensive guide and training, so you can confidently handle these situations! 👍
They won't let us spray the outside of a house in massachusetts
A process of refurbishing (with paint) looks simple (and cost-effective). But since you are painting old/used stuff...how do you handle e.g. damaged cabinet doors, worn-out handles, damaged roof tiles...like...if original material is in bad shape...if you just paint it, it will still look like s#!t. Do you do all these repairs/fixes/replacements, before painting? I imagine this can really be time consuming (and high service bill at the end) or are these tasks customers domain? With these type of work, there are million details that have to be discussed. And how many % of customers are not happy with final outcome (they were expecting a 'new' kitchen)? How do you handle this situations? Hope i didn't ask too many questions :)
Our goal is to offer a cost effective way to modernize a property which means make it look like new for a fraction of the cost of replacement. We can do minor repairs but if the kitchen (or any other surface) is beyond the point of return, we let customers know we can't Spray-Net their home. This happens very rarely but to make our customers happy, we always make sure to set proper expectations!

Our proprietary coatings are only available through our franchisees. All Spray-Net franchisees go through an in-depth training to be able to apply our coatings effectively, using our patented process in order to provide that factory finish that our clients are after.

I will never really understand why a process would have a patent. Patents on how to do things are probably the most anti-capitalistic things out there. Processes shouldn't have patents and competition should be allowed in order to make companies stay competitive by progressing and evolving their process.
Patents kill competition and causes the one that dominates the industry to stagnate, in which perpetuates the exact thing the guy stated in the video "this is how we always did it".
Agreed that businesses need to continuously innovate, optimize and update to avoid doing things the way they've always been done! Our patents are on our process but the secret sauce lies within the components of the process that we're constantly updating and optimizing. We don't patent our chemistry otherwise we'd have to divulge our formulas. Instead, we've patented certain processes that are only possible to execute with our proprietary chemistry anyway. This helps us quickly demonstrate how different what we're doing is. Hope this clarifies!

Typically for painting you have to be a licensed contractor. Does that mean a prospective franchisee already has to have years of painting experience and have their license?
