Shche ne vmerla Ukraina" (Ukrainian: Шче не мерла Україна, or "Ukraine's [glory] has not yet perished") is the national anthem of Ukraine. The lyrics constitute a slightly modified original first stanza of the patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer from the region of Ukraine's capital, Kiev. In 1863, Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and a Greek-Catholic priest composed music to accompany Chubynsky's text. The first choral performance of the piece was at the Ukraine Theater in Lviv, in 1864. The song was first the national anthem of the Ukrainian People's Republic, Carpatho-Ukraine and later the independent post-Soviet Ukraine.

There is a historical frontier theory. According to it, Ukrainians are a frontier people. Ukraine is on the edge of Europe and has always been the first to meet hordes from Asia. Also, Turks and Greeks sailed here through the Black Sea (according to the legend, the tomb of Achilles is located on Snake Island). This created an incredible mix of cultures. The position of the country gave both huge opportunities (the power of the kingdom of Rus in the 9th-13th centuries) and huge problems. Timothy Snyder calls this area the "Bloody Lands" because the number of wars and conflicts here was enormous.
The people living here have developed the ability to quickly organize in the face of danger (remember the image of a Cossack in folk paintings. There is always a horse, spear, saber next to him) and adapt to new conditions. Therefore, it is not surprising that the anthem speaks of defending one's land, and the text seems to be addressing the enemy.
Enemy attacks in Ukraine were so common that we have a diminutive form for the word "enemy". As if this is something ordinary, familiar, something that is always there. This form of the word is used in the national anthem.
It's amazing, but you became immersed in geopolitical news thanks to the CZcams music channel. Tell me this a year ago and I would have laughed.

Geographically, Ukraine is located in the very center of Europe. also in Ukraine there is a sign of the geographical center of Europe, recognized by the whole world.
But since there is a very good climate, a lot of living creatures and the best land in the world in terms of fertility, many neighbors wanted to occupy these lands and fought among themselves and tore Ukraine apart, and the ethnic people suffered from this, who from the 1200s partisans and fought for independence , after their country was occupied.

The anthem is actually shorter then those translated subs. The anthem itself is based on a poem of Pavlo Tchubinsky. This anthem used to be one of the offcial anthems of Ukraine National Republic back in 1917-1920. BTW according to Wikipedia there's an official translation of the lyrics of the anthem made back in 1917:
Nay, thou art not dead, Ukraine,
    See, the glory's born again,
    And the skies, O brethren,
    Smile once more!
As in Springtime melts the snow
So shall melt away the foe,
    And we shall be masters
    Of our homes.
Soul and body, yea, our all
    Offer we at freedom's call-
    We, whose sires were mighty
    Cossack braves
PS The last part of the translation, displayed in time when they were singing the last part twice (We'll fight together for freedom from the Syan to the Don, We will not allow any others to rule in our Motherland) is the part of the poem that was excluded from the anthem in the version of 1992. I dunno the real reasons of that, but it seems, that one of the reasons was that Ukraine has already lost its territories since 1920, when its eastern border was way farther to the east at the Don river, including the now russian cities of Rostov, Voronezh and Belgorod, where even now ethnic ukrainians live.

Indeed, since the 1200s, Ukraine has been torn apart by its neighbors for many centuries, and Ukrainians fought for many centuries not only with Russia, but also with Poland, the Ottoman Empire, the Mongol-Tatars, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. each of them tried to snatch a piece of land from the Ukrainians. At the time, only Russia and Hungary remained with imperial ambitions. but Hungary is a small country - it lost its colonies and they have a very small army, but it periodically does nasty things to Ukraine, as it has ambitions for the part of the West of Ukraine - Transcarpathia, where ethnic Hungarians live - descendants of former colonizers. but since the country is small and few in number, they do not really pose a big threat. Besides, this is a NATO country.
They will not go to Ukraine with a war, although the other day there were statements by their foreign minister that, if necessary, they would send their troops to Ukraine to protect the ethnic Hungarians. But Russia poses a real threat to all countries and peoples that were in its occupation. Ukraine really at the beginning of the 20th century was 50% larger than modern Ukraine. Then, after the collapse of the Russian Empire, Russia piece by piece occupied the young state of Ukraine. Ukraine just got freedom and did not have time to rebuild, create an army and acquire connections, Russia then simply crushed the number of Russian soldiers, drowning Ukraine in blood. At that time, no one helped Ukraine, there was no military equipment, factories did not work, and Ukrainians were also starved. and the population had different political views. For example, only in the first 30 years from 1917-1947, the Western part of Ukraine managed to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ukrainian state, then as part of Poland, then the Soviet Union, then in the German occupation, then again as part of the Soviet Union, respectively, among the Ukrainians At that time there were different political preferences and the population was scattered. But after the occupation of Ukraine by the Soviet Union, the Russian authorities annexed part of the regions of Ukraine to Russia, and in the rest of Ukraine they put their puppet government, because they understood that it would not be possible to completely colonize Ukraine because of the freedom-loving Ukrainian character, and therefore there was the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. This was the beginning of forcing the Soviet Union.
but there was partisanship, which is still hysterical in the Russian government. I read the archives. The USSR collapsed thanks to the partisans. in our time, all military schools of the USA study the experience of Ukrainian partisans - after all, this was the first army in the world without its own country. and not only that, they raised partisanship and patriotic spirit in all the republics of the then USSR. that is why nationalism broke out in all the republics of the Soviet Union. Ukrainian partisans had their own underground mail, their currency - bofons, their awards and orders, and they cooperated with Ukrainians who were all over the world and held meetings and councils with them, as well as with ethnic Ukrainians who were in the power of other country in parlament
Hence, as a result of the sanctions of the Western countries imposed on the USSR, and the outbreak of nationalism in all the republics of the USSR. their goal was the Free State of Ukraine and freedom for other peoples of the USSR, who would live in their own countries and govern themselves. in 1991, after the proclamation of the act of independence of Ukraine, the last partisans of the 40s came out and declared that they had achieved what they had been fighting for all these years. Only at that time there were from 20 thousand to 500 thousand partisans, since Ukraine was torn apart for many centuries, because different Ukrainians had different political preferences ..
Wait, but nov in Ukraine, such partisans are 95% of the total population of Ukraine, since Ukraine as a state has taken place and has existed for 31 years. Because Russia has already lost to Ukraine. they then could not cope with tens of thousands of partisans, and now there are tens of millions of such partisans. And yes. By the way, now new republics are already being formed on the territory of the Russian Federation. Kuban, Vonozhe, Belgorod, Bryansk Republic (Starodubshchina), Kursk, Taganrog, Novgorod Republic. they identify themselves as suburban Ukrainians. These are ethnic Ukrainians with ethnic Ukrainian lands that were cut off at the beginning of the 20th century. They want to go home to Ukraine.

Thanks for review. I agree that if you will consider old version (written in 19th century), message to only one enemy. However, modern version is a more universal. We fought not just against Russian-Golden Mongolian hoards, but also against Poland, Hungary and Turkei (old name Turkey). There were also short periods (up to WW1), when driven by different empires or kings we fought against each other. Therefore, for me Ukrainian anthem is rather a symbol of hope and kind of small flame, which was ignited by our ancestors and keeps burning through centuries. It mentions our past and postulates our future. I hope that in future every single Ukrainian will have this flame burning in their hurts all the time.

@@natmaren989 It _was_ equal in strength with the Reich. Its planning was bad, its strategy of depending on the Maginot Line to buy time for the French to get to the Ardennes forest (as if eight months of declared war was not enough) was even worse and their tactics did not redeem their strategy. By the time of the surrender, the French Army lost two of its three million soldiers, 500,000 killed and the rest imprisoned. Usually it's the invader that suffers 3:1 KIA, here i,t was the French.
It did not help that there was a large segment of French society not unsympathetic to fascism and anti-Semitism and who preferred Vichy "Work, Family, Country" to "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity." Russia's goal in Ukraine is to wipe Ukraine off the map and disperse its people across the empire. It's no wonder that Ukrainians fight harder and against worse odds.

This is not only a message for the enemy. This is an idea that lives in the heart of every Ukrainian. The idea of home protection. "We'll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom" This is what our ancestors did and what we do when the enemy came. I played in the theater before the invasion and now half the actors who were not soldiers joined the army voluntarily. The other half became volunteers and help. Every chat in the messenger has become a volunteer. People stood in huge queues to donate blood. Ordinary civilians organized street patrols and caught collaborators. When the zoo ran out of money for food for the animals, people bought tickets for the next 4 months, because it was the easiest way to help. In liberated cities, coffee shops feed the soldiers for free, but the soldiers still pay to support the economy. And there are hundreds, thousands of such stories. This means that we are of the Cossack race. This means that we will do anything for our land. Because this land is a paradise for us and a hell for our enemies. And the anthem is an eternal reminder of that.

Thank you for covering this! In fact, official text lacks the reference “from San to Don (those are rivers). Because San runs through territory of Poland and Don runs through russia. This is VERY important, because it demonstrates that Ukraine is a peaceful nation and never had territorial claims to its neighbors’ lands. At some point, these lands were claimed to be Ukraine, but these times has long gone, and we are not looking back.
And one more thing. As a Ukrainian, I would like to correct, that the anthem is directed to the nation, not to the enemies. They are mentioned only to tell that they will vanish inevitably. But for this, we must be ready to make a sacrifice. Thank you for your attention :)

There is an issue in video you reacted on. Current official version of the anthem consists of one couplet and one refrain. In this video refrain sounds twice but text of subtitles looks like it was once and then it takes the text of the second couplet. It can be seen when you said:"What are Syan and Don?" but chorus just repeated the text of refrain. Original song which was taken as anthem, had three couplets and rows with Syan and Don (the rivers as borders on West and East of Ukrainians ethnic territories) are from the second one.

Hey, Momo! On 5:31 you can hear that it just repeats the previous 2 lines, but in the video for some reason, it shows the start of the next verse of the alternative version of the song. This alternative version is longer, and because of the line "We'll stand together for freedom, from the Syan to the Don", it was cut after the first verse in the actual anthem. Ukraine didn't want to have territorial disputes with neighbors, so this line and all the following are not included in the national anthem. And the original song this anthem is based upon doesn't mention Syan and Don, it was added probably by Sich Riflemen approximately in 1920.

I would call say the anthem is more of a pledge.
Also, I think Ukrainians are a bit more nationalistic in general due to that history. My father was Ukrainian but was born in what was then Yugoslavia but even so always identified as Ukrainian and even said I'm Ukrainian. He even told me a story about my grandfather who would get angry if you ever called him Russian.

A week ago, my best friend's mother was killed by a Russian rocket. it happened near my house, she went out to feed the street cats. Her granddaughter does not know about this yet, she is 7 years old. She think that granny had gone abroad and therefore had no contact with her. But soon the parents will tell her everything... You are right, the child will never forget. And maybe she will dedicate her life to restore justice. So that whoever did it, even after tens of years, they were afraid of being found and condemned. This pain simply will not be soothed.

Our grandsons and their grandsons will know the truth. And hope war will not start again

Ukraine's glory and will have not died yet,
Fate will smile on us, brothers of youth.
Our enemies will perish like dew in the sun.
We, brothers, will also rule on our side.
We will give soul and body for our freedom,
And we will show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack race.
Let's stand, brothers, all for free from Xiang to Don,
    We will not allow anyone to rule in our native land;
The Black Sea will still smile, grandfather Dnipro will rejoice,
The dolenka will ripen in our Ukraine.
We will give our soul and body for our freedom
And we will show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack race.
And zeal, sincere work will still prove itself,
There will still be a loud song in Ukraine,
He will fight back for the Carpathians, he will roar through the steppes,
The glory of Ukraine will be among nations. We will give our soul and body for our freedom

Compared to this anthem, the Marsellaise is pretty bloodthirsty.
    Refrain:
    To arms, citizens,
    Form your battalions,
    March, march!
    Let an impure blood
    Water our furrows!
Mexico has a peaceful foreign policy, but if you invade:
Mexicans, at the cry of war,
assemble the steel and the bridle,
𝄆 and the Earth trembles to its core
to the resounding roar of the cannon. 𝄇
Compared to this, Ukraine's anthem is mild.
Also, the last two lines in the text date from an older version of the anthem before independence. The last two lines are now repeated because, as posted elsewhere, they make claims on Russian and Polish land. Now the Poles are friends and Ukraine would not take Russian lands if you paid them.

11:43 it 'cause of the borders, at north we mostly speak russian (before 24th febr at least). At the west people speaks more like "polish" as second language, the country is huge, the only main language - ukrainian, but we free to speak any languge, as the common sence if you are "understandable" to other people it's ok. Do not come with tanks and bad intents and we will be friends.

4:35 the text is wrong actually (lots of Ukrainians also sing it that way), it is not "Upon us, fellow Ukrainians" e.g. "Shche nam, brattia ukrayintsi...", but "Upon us, young fellows" or "Upon us, fellow youngsters" - "Shche nam, brattia molodiyi". But the sound is right

Ukrayiny, not Ukrayina. The translation is correct the transliteration is not, in that part :) It's the difference between "Ukraine has not yet perished" (wrong transliteration) and "Ukraine's freedom has not yet perished, not has her glory" hope that explains it somewhat...

Ukraine is the succesor of a country known as Kyiv Rus. This country neighbours a country named Grand Duchy of Moscow or Moscovia (Russia is the succesor of this country)
During the Mongol invasion Moscovia betrayed its ally Kyiv Rus and colaborated with the Mongols. In return for their betrayel Mongols rewarded Moscovites with privilige to collect tribute from Kyiv Rus in the name of the Mongol Khan.
When the Mongol Empire colapsed the ruled of Mosovia (who was a Mongol) rebranded Grand Duchy of Moscow into Tsardom of Russia and himself into Tsar of Russia. He did this to lay claim to territories and heritage of Kyov Rus’ (the last s is a soft s’) that in the Greek language was names Kyiv Rosia. At the moment if the rebranding he did not control any part of Modern day Ukeaine. The Moscovites at the moment of rebranding adopted the Mongol way of life and their lust to expect the Empire with brut force and tyrany (basically continuing the legacy of the Mongols).
Gradually Tussia occupied half of modern day Ukeaine (estern Ukeaine). Western Ukraine became occupied by Russia only during II WW.
Russia implemented a set of barbaric policies colectivly called russification (the purpouse of which was to erase Ukrainians as a people and nation from history, erase their national identity and make them adopt a new identity called „lesser Russians” a term used till this day by many Russians). Russia implemented slavery on occupied territories of Ukraine that was abolished in 1861. Russification policies lasted up till the moment Ukraine got independence from the USSR.
Despite slavery, bans of Ukrainian language, literature, history, despite severe punishments Ukrainians constantly rebeled against their masters forming an illegal country of run away slaves „cossacks” (litteral meaning of cossack is free man) with a base of operations named Zaporizhian Sich on an iseland called Khortytsia that is on the Dnipro river.
The anthem was written during this time and it gave hope to people that were slaves in their own occupied homeland. The anthem talks about a future where Ukrainians are free from slavery and have a homeland they can call their own and it involved a pledge to lay your body and soul for this dream so future generations may have a better future than their ancestors.
The numbers of people killed by Russia in Ukraine goes in the tens of millions. About 10 million people died during the artificial man made famine organised by Stalin to „solve the Ukrainian question”. Later millions have been expropriated and deported to far away unhospitable lands deap in the soviet Union or inprisoned in Russian concentration camps called GULAGS in the polar regions of Russia.
The determination to fight to the last drop of blood has its roots in the cossack days as cossacks as run away slaves and rebbels were subject to extreeme torture and slow and painfull death if they were cought, to discurrage other slaves from following into their footsteps. This is why cossacks always fought to the death with everytjing they had and why they had a reputation for being fearless. To this day the word „kozak” in Polish slang means someone extreamly brave to the point of being wreckless.
One more curiouse thing are the colours of the Ukrainian batle flag black and red. There is a good photo that explains this choice of colour. On it we can see a Ukrainian soldiers bloodied uniform. Some of the blood spilled on the pach of the Blue and yellow Ukrainian flag. The part of the pach covered with blood has made the flag change colours into black and red.
