      Like the exterior, some of the interior. Not good or practical from passenger point of view. Good for commute or city driving! Not for long drive on motorway! Would have been better if had range of 200 plus miles ! 125 miles is just for local drive.

    I already got mine. I love it. Power & range & size enough for me. I commute maximum 100km / day. But my average it 30km. Low weight & luxury cabin, perfect combination.
    I have 3 problems:
    a. from B pillar on ear level, there is a humming constant noise
    b. the back visibility sideways, because of the tiny rear door is limited, and a bit annoying in the city traffic
    c. the charging cables have no reservoir in the trunk under the floor mat
    Everything else is A+ for me.

    Here in the UK the MX-30 had not so good reviews because of the short range, but I think it is a great alternative to smaller city-focused EVs like Honda e and MINI Electric which have similar range and price. Also you have the benefit of Mazda's great design and a taller crossover-style. However it is not a practical alternative to more expensive crossover EVs like Kia e-Niro and Peugeot e2008 because of small range and small rear seats. Many people in cities still prefer a crossover so I hope Mazda MX-30 will be successful. Great review by the way, I like how much detail you put in and use common sense to make conclusions.

    A very competent and fair analysis review of the MX-30 by Thomas. Thank you. I’m totally smitten by this unique Crossover SUV Coupe styled BEV, and despite the initial reservations about the 35.5kWh Battery range, I’ve completely come to my senses and realised I don’t ever need more than that range in my present lifestyle - I’m perfectly okay with that.
    Home charging is an absolute necessity - unless you live virtually next door to a row of charging stations or you’ve got charging readily available at work.
    Home charging at 6.6kW/h is the key to exploiting this vehicle to the fullest.
    I’ve even considered the MX-30 R-EV over this one - that has a 50 litre fuel tank and a 0.8L Wankel Rotary Generator - giving almost 400 miles in conjunction with the reduced 17.5kWh battery.
    It’s an interesting option - but I’d still rather prefer the MX-30 EV instead - unless I regularly needed to travel longer distances between charger points.
    This IS a car I want. The 2nd hand values are already calling out to me.
    Disclosure: in late 2004, I purchased a 1998 Mazda MX-3 1.6i DOHC Coupe; it had already had 5 owners (all the same family) and had only 33k miles on the clock.
    I drove it for 8.5 years before parting with it at 77k miles. Nothing went wrong. Nothing broke. And it was hands down the most exotic head turning vehicle I had ever owned.
    I still miss it.
    I can see that same quality build in the MX-30 - that’s my next car.
    Thank you for a great review!

    Mazda interiors are really great. They're very good quality and have high quality finishes and good build quality. Even the switches and knobs feel good quality. Better than some premium carmakers. I think Mazda have overtaken VW now for mainstream premium interiors. Usually Japanese car interiors are not great. They're plasticy and cheap feeling but Mazda is different. Whoever is in charge of Mazda interiors, they need to be commended for a job well done.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet Před 4 lety +4

      Mazda would be glad to read this comment. Mazda has spent a lot of research and development into driver interactions. Everything from how a driver can perceive a font (which is one reason Mazda changed to two consistent fonts - one marketing, and one for human interaction), to the position of vertebrae on seat cushions. One part of this branch is what Mazda calls "shokkaku", which translates to "sense of touch".
      Kenta Kubo from Mazda is an associate professor of psychology who was hired to deal with this very problem. Along with several engineers including, Asami Yonezawa they want to answer the question: What constitutes good touch? And how can you measure something so subjective? The point Mazda wanted to determine was what type and amount of force is required to operate any switch and how much feedback should be provided back to make its use ideal.
      Kubo utilised the Russell’s Circumplex Model of Affect, a psychological emotional model to determine how Mazdas switches should feel. Kubo explained in interviews, “Everyone’s perception of touch is different. That’s why we used this model - how much force is needed to get an appealing click.”
      Kubo said, “If a button is too active you become exhausted, too smooth you become bored. We wanted an ‘up’ value that felt extremely pleasant”.
      They developed the new button feel over several years and it was first seen on the new Mazda 3.
      Google "Asami Yonezawa" and "shokkaku" and there are more interesting stories describing how much effort they have gone into.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 Před 4 lety +1

      @@inodesnet Interesting. I know premium carmakers do this with fonts and ergo seats and their switches are tuned to require 1 Newton of force or something like that. Never seen a mainstream carmaker do it. So good on Mazda. The new CX5's interior was really nice when I sat in one. I was very surprised.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet Před 4 lety +2

      @@SDav21 there are many wonderful differences and quite a few similarities between Japanese and German cultures that make their way from a way they live their life through to how they produce something.
      I spend a lot of time with family in Japan, so I am more familiar with how they live and work.
      I think one particular life philosophy they have I love is to know that perfection is a life goal (i.e. no one is perfect, you get better and improve as you practice your profession or art).
      But they have a black and white, almost clinical approach to how things are done which can unfortunately remove soul and sensation from the things they produce.
      The Koreans are a little more free thinking, but they have always turned to European design centres to put a bit of life into the look of their products.
      Mazda's wake up call was when Ford decided to dump and run to save money back in 2010. It allowed them to completely reinvent themselves which involved a lot of cleansheet, R&D, engineering work on engines (none of them follow the lead from others). They even completely changed the location of engineers and designers to be side by side with new software to ensure that both seamlessly fed into each other.
      But the focus on the human aspect was a master stroke.
      The last time I was at Mazda HQ in Hiroshima (2019), I happened to be there on the day Mazda invited Mazda car mechanics from around the world for a car repair competition (for record, the Australian team won the competition).
      But I overhead some of the US team talking about how impressed they were about feed back loops.
      For one particular issue, from reporting the issue to Mazda in Japan to having a fix be engineered, tested and onto production vehicles took under 7 months.
      That's impressive in itself!
      Some car makers would wait until a revised model to insert a change into the production line. Mazda was treating the production line like a software engineer would code. That's true continuous improvement.

      @inodesnet Před 4 lety +1

      It's interesting you mention the Q3. Autobild in Germany has one of the world's toughest tests on a car; it's Dauertest (endurance test). They purchase cars, drive them for 100,000km and service regularly, then dismantle the car into every single nut, bolt and panel to analyse wear and tear. Since they switched to a new style test in 2014, the Audi Q3 has proved to be their second least reliable vehicle. Two Mazda's rate very highly in the test however. The CX-5 wear and tear was compared to the Q3 stating that the Audi seemed to appear to have worn more than double the 100,000km (i.e. low durability) whereas the CX-5 seemed to have done half the distance, suggesting Mazda had chosen more durable component. To be fair to Audi though, some of their cars actually do very, very well in the new post 2014 rankings. However in the 15 years prior to this, Mazda had a couple of cars that we unique in that they were among a very small number of cars that Autobild deemed to be faultless in terms of reliability (their system rates cars by giving points to cars that have faults, recalls or abnormal wear and tear - almost every single vehicle had at least a couple of things over 100,000km).

    If only Mazda would make this car with a 60kWh Battery, a bit more rear seat and trunk space, and tow hitch option for min. 500kg for maybe 35000€, this would be a huge seller I think. The Exterior and interior looks so darn nice though. Hopefully a MX-50 coming!?

      @@dace8030 I don't care if the range get reduced by more than 50 % with only 500kg load. we only need it for driving 10-100km when driving trash/garden waste to the recycle/scrap station. or buying large stuff like furniture etc. In fact most scandinavians need towing for purposes like these. and it is a critical feature when buying a car. If EV manufactures wants to sell a lot of cars. this is important.

    Kleiner Input zum Thema Fahrwerk:
    Schaut man sich die Impulserhaltung an, wird ein schweres System (das Fahrzeug) weniger stark durch ein sich bewegendes Objekt (die Räder, welche zudem durch die Federn und Dämpfer gebremst werden) in Bewegung versetzt, als ein leichteres System.
    Impuls=Masse*Geschwindigkeit
    Um ein schweres Fahrzeug also ebenso anzuregen wie ein leichteres, müssen die Räder entweder deutlich schwerer sein oder deutlich schneller in Richtung Fahrzeug aufsteigen oder weniger gefedert oder weniger gedämpft werden.
    Grundsätzlich liegen z.B. beladene Fahrzeuge deshalb erstmal "satter" auf der Straße.

    This will be a great second car as range is more than sufficient for most daily needs and if you have a longer range car then the small battery makes perfect sense. Alternatively if you only need long range once or twice a year then hire a car or take the train. The interior looks superb, much better than Tesla and Mazda make sweet handling cars. And the price looks attractive and pretty competitive with ICE alternatives. Given the eco impact of battery production and end of life, plus the weight I think companies like Mazda are correct in getting people to think about the range they need rather than carrying a huge battery they use once or twice a year.

Having been 100% EV driver now for the past 7 years, we've ordered the MX-30 to replace my wife's 2017 VW eUP. Yes, the range is so/so, but do you really need 300 km + for the second car? I too thought it will be a deal breaker before, but I tested the car, I have to admit, it's fine with me, it works extremely well, very subtle, sound is very well engineered, nice blend of torque sound that doesn't sound like combustion engine, more like thing from 2020, it's non intrusive and you stop noticing it very quickly, and does what it's supposed to do, giving you feedback when you're accelerating and decelerating. Mind you, that's just my feeling after some 30 minutes of driving... I will tell you more when I get the car next week :)

      Most people are extremely overrating numbers like range and charging speed. In reality for most people those numbrs are irrelevant since they simply charge at night and don't drive more than 150 km per day anyways. For those people a smaller battery is much better. For most people big batteries are a huge waste of resources (lithium production is very harmful and limited).

I used to drive a 2 tonne Daihatsu tip truck and when that thing was empty, it was a hilarious amount of fun to drive and a big part of the fun was the exhaust braking which allowed going deeper into corners before actually braking. • @HeavyMetalorRockfan9
      @HeavyMetalorRockfan9 Před 4 lety +4

      this is in Europe, there is 20% VAT in the price and Japanese cars also get hit with 10% tax. 22,200 Euros before taxes, or 24, 900 USD before taxes. Stateside you're under 27.5k USD with taxes and before incentives ($7.5k federal tax credit, more depending on the state, which is higher in states you're more likely to use this in like East Coast or California). All in all, you're looking at like a 20-25k US electric car with everything all in.
      By contrast a Honda Civic costs $20,650 before tax. A better direct comparison with a Mazda cx-30 which has similar power figures starts at $21,900 before tax. This car has a lot of kit from BSM, ACC, LKA, a HUD, etc. It seems extremely price competitive actually, and genuinely a decent deal. They've also said multiple times they're working on a rotary range extender for the car, if it can bump range to 300-400km (186-250 miles) for an extra $2k or so, it suddenly also becomes a viable longer trip car (don't have to wait for the longer charge time either). The biggest limitation as it seems to be with all Mazdas is interior space/back seat room imo.

    • @dace8030
      @dace8030 Před 4 lety

      I agree, the car looks beautiful, though longer and bigger back seats would be better.
      The battery is way to small. It's not about price. For me, add a 65-80kw battery and give me a 500km range and it would be a much better proposition.

      @@HeavyMetalorRockfan9 Thnx for the reply. I didn't know about the 30% tax in Europe for Japanese cars man. I kind of get it now for example Honda Civic Type R is 40,000 € but in US is 35,000 USD. Now I'm interested in how you got the 22,200 number? Anyway my complaining of the price is not for current situation where federal tax credits are still available cause eventually it's going to phase out. So I don't see the price tag like you do.
      Moreover battery manufacturing cost has dropped insanely in recent years and I think Mazda could fit a bigger battery for the same price but their policy to push the price as high as possible didn't let them to (there is a conspiracy theory here: Mazda put a high price tag on their EVs so that their combustion engine cars sales don't drop like crazy).
      They definitely will offer a version with bigger batteries but who knows for how much...
      You are totally right about the lack of interior space/back seat room in Mazdas in general but this is a mx, not making sense in some sort of ways is kind of in its DNA so I allow it ;)
      EDIT: And if they use the range extender it would make this kind of a PHEV cause now your car has a considerable amount of CO2 emissions.

    • @HeavyMetalorRockfan9
      @HeavyMetalorRockfan9 Před 4 lety

      @@mhmdagd2684 my bad, my math was wrong it comes to 23k not 22k (30,000/1.3 to find original price since original price * 1.3 = 30,000). The federal tax credits work for the first x amount of units sold of an electric vehicle for every company, Mazda is not hitting that target for a very long time, and I don't see it being phased out more rapidly until like 2027. Mazda's argument for small battery is weight savings as well as environmental friendliness, realistically 200km (if it holds up) is plenty for most people on day to day, and I imagine this is being sold as a secondary city car for maybe a 2 car household. They def have room to work with (it's not even a dedicated EV platform).
      I prefer the range extender personally it differs from a PHEV in an important way in that the ICE motor is not driving the wheels, but rather just generating electricity. This seems inefficient but apparently rotaries make really efficient generators and its actually more efficient in city driving because of regen (not like you're going to need it in city driving).
      There's a lot of questionable things about Mazda's decisions here obviously, but overall for how much of a hodge podge it appears to be, it is actually quite cohesive, although I wish they altered their body construction to allow for more space and luggage space to exploit the size of the car (but then it wouldn't be a Mazda :P)
