Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was laid to rest in his hometown Mashhad today. Tens of thousands of people thronged the streets to pay their respects to the late President. Raisi, Iranian foreign minister and six others, were killed when a US-made helicopter crashed near the Azerbaijan border. Former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed the US sanctions on aviation parts for Raisi's demise. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also accused the US, saying that "US sanctions are taking lives." This comes as Iran faces longstanding foreign sanctions, dating back to the 1979 revolution, which has made it difficult for the country to maintain its aircraft systems.
