    Hello and welcome to a special 4/20 episode of Weird Music on the glumburger channel. In today's episode, we will be exploring none other than the ultimate weedian procession most commonly known as Dopesmoker, by the legendary lord of the riffs' Sleep. This monumental album (also known as Jerusalem in some circles) sees Sleep completely indulging in their colossal doom music by producing an hour-long recording that just let's the riff play out over and over and over and over... It is a truly phenomenal album experience that is best played at incredibly loud volumes. Fall out of life indeed.

    Matt Pykes guitar sound is something out of this world. When that first note kicks in, is when the journey to eternity begins. Absolutely love rolling a fat one, light up and listen to this album and many others like BullHead/Houdini by The Melvins, Electric Wizard/Dopethrone by Electric Wizard, Capricorn by Orchid, Busse Woods by Acid King, The Art of Self Defence by High on Fire and thr list goes on and on

      I used to feel the same way until I joined the band back in 2018. I think playing heavy noise music kind of opened up the genre to me if that makes any sense!

    Bois baked
    Saw these guys in Tucson. They played the first 20 minutes of the song, and when Pike opened with that second part of the first riff, he kicked the other half of his rig up…. Needless to say, they use *no* dummy cabs.

    I've been a Sleep fan since the early 90s. I used to tour with a band that played a few gigs with then when Holy Mountain had just came out. Fast Forward a few years later and they had already been signed and then dropped by London records over Jerusalem (that's what they were calling it then). I saw them play the early version of it and it's pretty much the whole set when they were opening for Nick Turners version of Hawkwind. They had their original drummer then. Anyway the set was great but weird. A lot of people came to hear them play Holy Mountain material and were a little put off by their set. I remember when it finally got released and at first it got a 50/50 from most people. They either loved it or hated it. I think it was maybe even more like 30 / 70 with 70% of people not liking this long track and new direction. Then they broke up which I think worked in their favor years later because over time they became more popular and sought after as Stoner rock got much bigger. But yeah it wasn't loved like it is now.

      @@stuartfishman1044 It's a parody of Yeats' poem "The Second Coming." I figured since "Dopesmoker" is about a caravan of stoners going to Jerusalem, it would be a fitting quote

    One of those rare bands that made better and better albums as they went on. The Sciences and the live set from Third Man Records are fantastic! New York is another great live album if you can find it. Hail Iommi!

    I love SLEEEP, but they are not the same without Chris Hakius. Jason is a phenomenal drummer, but Chris had such a raw and powerful energy. He was like one of those wind up monkey drummers slamming away on the kit.

    i will always remember how i discovered Sleep's Dopesmoker and thats over 15+ years ago already,
    it was the early days of youtube and i was listening to Suicidal Tendencies's How will i laugh tomorrow and someone in the comments recommended it as an reply that that ST was a 7min+ epic song, so i peaked my mind an put it on
    My mind was blown and since then ive been a fan, i was so kinda surprised that The Sciences came out almost 20years after Dopesmoker was written (so can we claassify that as a comeback album?)

    • @glumburger
      @glumburger  Před 10 měsíci +1

      It definitely felt like a comeback album. I remember being very surprised by its release as I don’t think I was expecting it (much like when Godspeed You! Black Emperor put out Allelujah! Don’t bend, ascend!).
      The Sciences has one of my top favourite Sleep tracks though, I genuinely can’t get enough of Antarcticans Thawed. 😁
