I was married to an abuser who was also a minister turned pastor, and the church supported him, knowing he is like that, (I wrote a book). Now he's remarried and someone else's problem child. Black churches as a whole don't address it because they're doing the abusing.

For those who think "Pastor gave up the word of god" or "glory to god pastor" or "very clear word" all I can say is if you wish to dialogue using reason I would love to as I think this pastor is a part of the problem when it comes to domestic violence.
Often "crazy" & "hysterical" women are that way because of the patriarchal attitudes towards them. To any with patriarchal attitudes why don't you brush up on how Jesus treated women (as equals) then think again. As far as women choosing to marry fools - often there are no warning signs that your future spouse will become abusive. Frequently the abuse begins after the abuser is certain he has control over the victim (a pregnancy is a common starting point) and abuse is very subtle at first (verbal & emotional) and, as we are taught to forgive we tend not to pay attention to the warning signs. The abuse escalates over time and will not stop until the abuser is made to take responsibility for his actions. This is where the church fails: it creates a climate where not only the abuser has no need to take responsibility for his actions but actually gets justification for them.

You do not stay in a relationship where there is abuse. So many women are dead because few only read a few verses. There are around 100 verses explaining abuse in our bible. If he beats you run and let the pastor marry him.
Adam was formed first. God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he them. Genesis 2:5&6 There was not a man to till the ground and the lord god formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Man and women was already created than he formed man first and then the women.
Btw ex is first in row of the worship team singing and praising his heart out but why has no-one quoted to him and yay why hasn't he read himself where God says that if you have unrepented sin in your life then your worship is an abomination? Seems only scriptures these types have a thorough knowledge of are the ones that involve wives submitting. In abuser speak submission usually means not questioning him even if it involves sin or stating your needs because your needs are not important and go against his (more important) need to control. This is very serious and the church is not taking it seriously. There's not only the issue of the damage DV does to the victims but the perpetrators themselves are in spiritual danger but the church hasn't the guts to do anything concrete about it - at least from what I've seen so far. Let's pray for all involved.
I suffered a miscarriage following a beating from my church going upstanding member of the community etc. ex-husband. Scripture was used by him to justify his behaviour and the pastor asked me what I'd done to provoke him. HUH? Guilt to keep me in my place when he was clearly the one who needed to learn to keep his hands in their place. Christians call abortion murder so what would a miscarriage due to DV be? Yet he was not called on it. I got out after I discovered his teenage son was abusing my 6 year old. I reported it to the authorities & the boy and my daughter got help. An ugly feud with my ex and his ex (they took sides together against me hahaha beautiful "Christian marriage") ensued and not only did I nor my child not get any support from the church but I was accused of having acted in vengence. I don't remember if I disclosed the name of this pastor, although the authorities wanted to know: child abuse is to be reported and this pastor had got on my case for doing just that. How warped must one be. But these days I wouldn't think twice. Beware pastors. Oh btw: zero compassion for the victims: a dead unborn child, a traumatized child as well as myself and a teenager who, if not helped, would have begun his own spiral out of control. Should have been a wake up call for all involved but as long as the church justifies and protects abusers it won't happen. But God is watching and the church will eventually be held accountable for not speaking up and taking a stand against these crimes. The church enabled my ex and is therefore JUST AS GUILTY AS HE!!! DV: hideous crime which has many repurcussions and ramifications down through the generations if not stopped. Am glad that at least I saved the lives of two young people who would have lived out a life of lies, addiction, misery and abuse had I not acted. I was crucified for it, though and to that I say SHAME SHAME SHAME on the church. You wonder why the world doesn't want what "we" have? You think the world is blind? Think again!
Sounds to me like this Rev. is saying that men are better at reasoning than women. This type of message aids abusers because it makes women question their own judgement also when women try to report abuse they're not taken seriously. This type of reasoning fuels abusive behaviour because it gives one group a justified reason to assert "authority" (aka control) over another. My ex used to pull this argument on me all the time. Fact is it's a fabrication and not true it's some mythical fairy tale - if you don't believe me search the scriptures and tell me where it specifically says women are poorer thinkers than men. Yes we're wired differently but some women are better thinkers than men. Our emotions and intuition have the upper hand because God gave us this as a tool to help ensure the survival of offspring. Example: how can a woman know from a baby's cry what the child is communicating and a man can't? Men and women are wired they way they are for SURVIVAL in the physical world. Men's superior body strength and mental focus are for provision and protection whereas a woman's intuition is to ensure survival of offspring. We were always meant to work as a team - created to complement each others strengths. It is the weakness of men that they cannot recognize this and as a result are usually the culprits of most marital strife. This theory about men being given headship because they use their head better is not only a fairy tale but also a dangerous one for the implication it has in cases of DV. I encourage this Rev. to use his head a bit better by doing better research and dispelling harmful myths if he is genuinely interested in making a difference. One thing that annoys me is mental laziness - if on top of mental laziness you expect to be respected for being more rational simply because you're male and therefore endowed with "better" reasoning then not only is it an insult to women but also to our Creator.
Thank you, this is not a wholesome message honestly. There are errors and misconceptions here and there . Who told you that men don't feel? Who told you they are not emotional? When their very lack of emotional expression is the very disease that sentenced them into self inflicted prison .....and the by-product of that is the rage displayed. I ran across this sermon while doing some research...all due respect Rev. Anderson but you present in need of some Domestic Violence Education to challenge some of your thinking and teaching on this topic. I believe that if you do a complete proper study on Domestic Violence you may change the way you preach and realize how some of what you taught was out of ignorance/not knowing on the topic. Some of what you said was spot on, other things were way off base and displays misogyny, spoken hopefully out of ignorance/not knowing of the topic from which you speak. From one minister to another I challenge you to revisit this topic, seek revelation and then preach a new message to your congregants.
Men don't have nothing to say when there confronted by their wives with concerns in his own marriage, but if his buddies got some juicy info about another couple's marriage they got opinions and solutions, but don't know how to fix there own situation at home. Selfishness is what it is. Prideful.
Adam chose to disobey period. Eve did not make him do it - if he was so intelligent and ruled by his head then it stands to reason he knew perfectly well what he was doing (see? I know how to use reason though I'm a woman.) But then what happened? Sin entered his heart and so rather than fess up and take responsibility for his actions (aka repentance a word mentioned hundreds if not thousands of times in the Bible) he blamed Eve and this has set the pattern for relations between the sexes ever since. The curse came after these events so can't say this is how God originally set things up because He didn't. Abusers are well known for not taking responsibility for their actions. If they did and were sincere and genuinely repented there wouldn't be a problem. The problem is that they don't and church "reasoning" (aka justification) only helps perpetuate the crime. Listen up preacher: taking responsibility for your actions is what real men do. That's what manning up really is not throwing one's weight around and lording it over another because of some perceived authority you think you were given. Boy sure lotta folks gonna be in for a few surprises on judgement day. Hope there are women in that church who are reading this and are giving my comments some thought. If so I'd urge you to talk to this Rev. and if he won't listen get out and change church. These attitudes fuel and form a foundation for abuse and you are being set up. Ignorance is NOT bliss! Peace.

Reverend I encourage you to take a fresh look at Genesis and read it again in a different light. God did not give Adam authority over Eve because he was created "first". Adam and Eve were created as one being at the same time. Then Eve was taken from Adam's side and God fashioned two beings out of one. God did this so that Adam would have a companion just like all the other creatures had companions. God fashioned Eve because Adam wanted a companion she was made from his very own flesh she was not fashioned second as a separate creature that he could lord over as his divine right. The issue of headship (N.B. that a man has over his wife and does not apply generally to men over women) came AFTER THE FALL it was not present when God originally made mankind!!! It was necessary for God to establish an order because sin had entered us. Don't get how being wired differently has anything to do with anything except that it's used as poorly reasoned justification for why men have the right to be in control of the marital relationship (aka abuse). Yes God established an order (N.B.) after the fall not before. However scripture says nothing about God establishing this order because Adam was a better thinker. Actually it was pretty dumb of him to eat the fruit - at least Eve was tempted but Adam just mindlessly went along with it just because Eve handed him the fruit so where did he leave his brain then??? How do we know it wasn't only after the fall that God gave men better reasoning seeing that Adam obviously needed it as he had failed his homework? Duh God gives you one simple instruction and can't even do that? So many assumptions and adding to scripture which we are told NOT TO DO. Men wake up and take responsibility for yourselves if you expect your women to respect you. Act like real men instead of whining and blaming women for everything.

What a minute pastor according to the bible God hates divorce according to the book of malachi and marriage is until death according to Romans chapter 7. In the case of domestic violence separation not divorce is in order and the victim should pray for his repentance and until then she should be celibate.

Btw ex is first in row of the worship team singing and praising his heart out but why has no-one quoted to him and yay why hasn't he read himself where God says that if you have unrepented sin in your life then your worship is an abomination? In abuser speak submission usually means not questioning him even if it involves sin or stating your needs because your needs are not important and go against his (more important) need to control. I suffered a miscarriage following a beating from my church going upstanding member of the community etc. ex-husband. Scripture was used by him to justify his behaviour and the pastor asked me what I'd done to provoke him. HUH? Guilt to keep me in my place when he was clearly the one who needed to learn to keep his hands in their place. Christians call abortion murder so what would a miscarriage due to DV be? Yet he was not called on it. I got out after I discovered his teenage son was abusing my 6 year old. I reported it to the authorities & the boy and my daughter got help. An ugly feud with my ex and his ex (they took sides together against me hahaha beautiful "Christian marriage") ensued and not only did I nor my child not get any support from the church but I was accused of having acted in vengence. I don't remember if I disclosed the name of this pastor, although the authorities wanted to know: child abuse is to be reported and this pastor had got on my case for doing just that. How warped must one be. But these days I wouldn't think twice. Beware pastors. Oh btw: zero compassion for the victims: a dead unborn child, a traumatized child as well as myself and a teenager who, if not helped, would have begun his own spiral out of control. Should have been a wake up call for all involved but as long as the church justifies and protects abusers it won't happen. But God is watching and the church will eventually be held accountable for not speaking up and taking a stand against these crimes. The church enabled my ex and is therefore JUST AS GUILTY AS HE!!! DV: hideous crime which has many repurcussions and ramifications down through the generations if not stopped. Am glad that at least I saved the lives of two young people who would have lived out a life of lies, addiction, misery and abuse had I not acted. I was crucified for it, though and to that I say SHAME SHAME SHAME on the church. You wonder why the world doesn't want what "we" have? You think the world is blind? Think again!

Sounds to me like this Rev. is saying that men are better at reasoning than women. This type of message aids abusers because it makes women question their own judgement also when women try to report abuse they're not taken seriously. This type of reasoning fuels abusive behaviour because it gives one group a justified reason to assert "authority" (aka control) over another. My ex used to pull this argument on me all the time. Fact is it's a fabrication and not true it's some mythical fairy tale - if you don't believe me search the scriptures and tell me where it specifically says women are poorer thinkers than men. Yes we're wired differently but some women are better thinkers than men. Our emotions and intuition have the upper hand because God gave us this as a tool to help ensure the survival of offspring. Example: how can a woman know from a baby's cry what the child is communicating and a man can't? Men and women are wired they way they are for SURVIVAL in the physical world. Men's superior body strength and mental focus are for provision and protection whereas a woman's intuition is to ensure survival of offspring. We were always meant to work as a team - created to complement each others strengths. It is the weakness of men that they cannot recognize this and as a result are usually the culprits of most marital strife. This theory about men being given headship because they use their head better is not only a fairy tale but also a dangerous one for the implication it has in cases of DV. I encourage this Rev. to use his head a bit better by doing better research and dispelling harmful myths if he is genuinely interested in making a difference. One thing that annoys me is mental laziness - if on top of mental laziness you expect to be respected for being more rational simply because you're male and therefore endowed with "better" reasoning then not only is it an insult to women but also to our Creator.

I ran across this sermon while doing some research...all due respect Rev. Anderson but you present in need of some Domestic Violence Education to challenge some of your thinking and teaching on this topic. I believe that if you do a complete proper study on Domestic Violence you may change the way you preach and realize how some of what you taught was out of ignorance/not knowing on the topic. Some of what you said was spot on, other things were way off base and displays misogyny, spoken hopefully out of ignorance/not knowing of the topic from which you speak. From one minister to another I challenge you to revisit this topic, seek revelation and then preach a new message to your congregants.

I know how to use reason though I'm a woman.) But then what happened? Sin entered his heart and so rather than fess up and take responsibility for his actions (aka repentance a word mentioned hundreds if not thousands of times in the Bible) he blamed Eve and this has set the pattern for relations between the sexes ever since. The curse came after these events so can't say this is how God originally set things up because He didn't. Abusers are well known for not taking responsibility for their actions. If they did and were sincere and genuinely repented there wouldn't be a problem. The problem is that they don't and church "reasoning" (aka justification) only helps perpetuate the crime. Listen up preacher: taking responsibility for your actions is what real men do. That's what manning up really is not throwing one's weight around and lording it over another because of some perceived authority you think you were given. Boy sure lotta folks gonna be in for a few surprises on judgement day. Hope there are women in that church who are reading this and are giving my comments some thought. If so I'd urge you to talk to this Rev. and if he won't listen get out and change church. These attitudes fuel and form a foundation for abuse and you are being set up. Ignorance is NOT bliss! Peace.

Reverend I encourage you to take a fresh look at Genesis and read it again in a different light. God did not give Adam authority over Eve because he was created "first". Adam and Eve were created as one being at the same time. Then Eve was taken from Adam's side and God fashioned two beings out of one. God did this so that Adam would have a companion just like all the other creatures had companions. God fashioned Eve because Adam wanted a companion she was made from his very own flesh she was not fashioned second as a separate creature that he could lord over as his divine right. The issue of headship (N.B. that a man has over his wife and does not apply generally to men over women) came AFTER THE FALL it was not present when God originally made mankind!!! It was necessary for God to establish an order because sin had entered us. Don't get how being wired differently has anything to do with anything except that it's used as poorly reasoned justification for why men have the right to be in control of the marital relationship (aka abuse). Yes God established an order (N.B.) after the fall not before. However scripture says nothing about God establishing this order because Adam was a better thinker. Actually it was pretty dumb of him to eat the fruit - at least Eve was tempted but Adam just mindlessly went along with it just because Eve handed him the fruit so where did he leave his brain then??? How do we know it wasn't only after the fall that God gave men better reasoning seeing that Adam obviously needed it as he had failed his homework? Duh God gives you one simple instruction and can't even do that? So many assumptions and adding to scripture which we are told NOT TO DO. Men wake up and take responsibility for yourselves if you expect your women to respect you. Act like real men instead of whining and blaming women for everything.

I don't know you guys and gals, but domestic violence is definitely against the Word of God. And I must say more.... almost every man that commits domestic violence is in adultery. And I must say more... every man that believes that woman should stay in a violence environment, has committed any degree of domestic violence.
