Some thing I read in interviews about avatar:
1. character customization is a thing
2.walking is in first person while mounts are in third person
3. plant have interactions which is why the game's in first person
personal opinion:
I played horizon forbidden west and we all know that that game is beautiful in third person. Before you ask what this has to do with avatar: If your near walls in horizon your camera will be pulled in a first person view. One thing I noticed in this mode was that I was able to focus more on the beauty of the world and that seeing you character can be a bit distracting. So I don't mind first person view in avatar.
The devs said that it's like stepping through the screen into the world of avatar and they want to deliver a immersive game that the player can interact with. For that reason they chose first person.
