whereas avocado farming can be lucrative there a few things i would like to point out.
1- Quality grafted Hass seeds will start fruiting after 18 to 24 months. Farmers therefore have to be patient.
2- You really dont need bees since the trees can cross pollinate. You can add Fuerte variety which does help in pollination and increase yield. The strategy of adding bee hives might also bring reveune from honey.
3- You need the local variety to plant the seed and use it as root stock fror Hass and Fuerte.
4- You need enough rainfall or invest in irrigation to succeed in avocado investment.
5- Weeds might compete with avocados and even introduce pests. But they do not affect photosynthesis. sunlight + water+ carbon =photosynthesis.
6- For farmers to benefit in avocado investment they have to consider permaculture which allows farmers to intercrop avocado with other crops suchs beans, coffees, vegies and other fruit trees.

To be honest avocados though being a super fruit and considered one of the healthy foods around. However, most farmers in Central and South America will tell you that avocado farms put a strain on the natural environment such as water scarcity and monoculture. Most of these farms are used to sell the fruit to stores in Europe and they don't pay a substantial cost for the fruit from these farmers, thus tend to lead to bad farming practices in these regions of the world. I am not against this but I would implore that anything that is being done must be examined with real care and not just to looking to exploit lands and natural resources for the sake of money.
Thanks for your observation my friend. Heavy water consumption seems to be the downside. I also learnt from another source, that the price in Europe is not the best. Surprisingly, China seems to be one of the best places to sell avocado. The US market is also very profitable. The idea of avocado farming in this video was to produce in Africa. the cost of production in Africa is very low and returns on investment is very high, The African population is increasing very fast, I mean really fast and so is demand. The price of avocado has more than doubled. The best part is, Africa has good climate for avocado to flourish. however as you said, it should be done respecting the environment. That is a very important aspect.

Good info, my only concern with avocado has been how water intensive it is---it literally creates droughts in the lands wherever they farm it and require substantial water support---I think we will have to limit how much land is allocated to it in Africa -if I'm wrong let me know

Cold pressed Avocado make better oil for cooking and for cosmetic. This is a fuel for a healthy lifestyle sure. You don’t need to buy a tree, you can replant the seed. There is videos on CZcams on how to replant the seed. You need to make it sprout it first. There is many videos online on how to. Who can afford 20usd each tree if you are going to start with so many trees? Maybe 10 usd is more reasonable. If you start as a farmer, you don’t have so much income to start up. You still see your money from a free seed to a tree.

The local Avoca do is very good, the thing is, Hass is a species from Mexico that has been heavily branded. We need to brand our local African species too. The truth is, it's one of the best. Many people out of Africa have never seen the type of large avocados we have here. Those from Mexico are far more smaller.
So again, Hass does very well in West Africa and our local species make an added advantage. We just need to do it correctly.

My parents planted avocados straight from the seed it takes 5 years so i tried grafting mmm i failed 😂 but m comfortable with waiting for them to bear naturally bt some fruits are easy to graft

However, i wish to warn most African would be farmers that most people get into farming due to peer pressure and misinformation that they will become Millionaires or billionaires. Farming like any other business needs passion and knowledge the dollar will follow.
Thats the reason why one Southern African nation that had a chaotic land reform is still suffering economically, and survives on donor food donation. There is food shortage every year because they have land but have passion about farming. Theybare now leasing the same land to so called white farmers.
Another point is avocado farmers in South America are not Millionaires because the western countries do exploit the farmers. Just like they do with cotton, cocoa, coffee farmers

What you need to do is to connect with other avocado farmers in your area. Together you can organize and negotiate with partners in big markets for export. That's how it starts. Another option if you don't want to export would be to add value to your avocado by transforming it into cooking oil, as it is high in demand in Nigeria.

Grafting is attaching one part of a plant to the root-stock of another plant with the aim improving the efficiency of fruit production (in the case of avocado).
The part of the plant that is attached to the root-stock is selected based on desirable traits like; disease resistance and the creamy texture of its parent plant.
Make a vertical split in the center of the root-stock, then attach the scion (stem from donor plant having desirable traits) into the cambium layer of the root-stock. As a tip, always make sure that the scion has a minimum of 2 buds.

40 dollars would go for renting 1 hectare per farming season. In many places. When it comes to actually buying, depending on the location, it starts at 150 dollars.
They might be using those avocados in China to make avocado oil to resell to Africa, hence Africa should diverify the oil that they use to cook.
The thing that makes Europe richer is the facts that they create labour and are not afraid of creating inventions.
Please make oil for export also, i don't believe that they only eat them.
Like a Korean lady was laughing at how they buy oil from Nigeria, refine it and sell it back to them. If Nigerians refined and made various products with the oil and trusted their youths abilities it won't work.

No, avocado takes more water than anything else and leads to drought, if you can find a river or good water supply close by then yes. Leads to much deforestation.
There is no thought the avocado tree consumes a lot of water. On the other hand, other trees are worse. The apple tree and the Hackberry tree are among the many trees that consume more water than the avocado. The apple tree consumes up to 820 liters of water, a banana sucker UpTo 750 Liters. Truth be told.
The amount of water avocado consumes ranks lower than average amongst most fruits and vegetables.
Concerning your second point, I totally agree with you. When starting an avocado farm, it's very important to choose an appropriate location. Locating it near a river is a huge advantage.

You are right it requires a lot of water, most tress do. I think it has to be done sustainably so as to preserve our lovely planet. This starts with chosing the right place to locate the farm. In addition to that, the health benefits are not to be neglected. Many people have health problems that leave them with just a small menu to feed from. I have been in the medical field for a long time now and understand what some people are going through. More to that, it's not good to wait and have a health condition before looking for a solution. The best way to live healthy is to prevent the problem in the first place. More than 70% of our health problems come from what we consume. Avocado is far healthier than many things we consume. Lastly, while it provides us with good health, we can also make some money out of it.
But Farmers remain poor
the thing is, we don't only need to cultivate, we also need to start thinking of transformation or value add. Agribusiness, when done rightly has up to 88 % success rate in most cases. If you want to appreciate agribusiness, you need to compare with other sectors too. its always good to compare two things. more than 50% of all new businesses fail within the first year of activities.

That's a very good reaction Shelton, 3 years is better than 15 years, at least that's the time it took for avocado to bear fruits in the past. thanks to technological advancements, we can now do it in 3 years. One of the reasons why its still very lucrative is that, many people think 3 years is still very long, this makes the 1% who take the risk to make huge returns on investment. As you rightly said, it's unrealistic to an extent for a poor farmer. the waiting time is just going to be "too long". Though to an extent, I think it might work for the poor farmer if scaling and delayed gratification is done correctly.
I avoid to eat any avocados as it is a damaging crop to plant and flying these fruits all over the world to is consumers is adding to the bad eco foot print

The west have to decide whether they want to pay a decent price for the avocados which would in turn encourage farmers in Africa or will they prefer for drugs to flood their streets because farmers cannot make money legitimately from avocados. The taliban it is said are now encouraging poppy growing because afghan farmers get better prices from poppies than agriculture. Very strange times we are living in.

So, what vital food crops or, cash crops will be sacrificed for massive avocado production in Kenya to meet chinese demand for it? Did you bother to think about that before advocating for the mass production of avocados as a cash crop in Kenya?
Pls be very careful about promoting this food crop in very large quantities. I fear it will not turn out well for Kenya and any other african country considering it. This may turn Kenya and other african countries into a massive continent that produces only food crops for China to the detriment of other vital foods we africans need for our survival here at home.
The Brazilians fell for these, when they went into mass production of soybeans for the chinese market to the detriment of her huge diversified forest regions which has always helped stabilise climate change all around the world. Today so much of that has been depleted and is affecting the environment negatively. Is that what you want, depleted massive rainforests all over africa for avocados? 🥑 Take a minute and think deeply about that. 🤔😒😑

We interplant grafted avocadoes with food crops such as maize, beans, sweet potatoes, vegetables plus cash crops. Most farms are not mono cropped.

Please Africans let us farm to feed Africa first. Let us farm to process everything in Africa without selling to USA, China, Europe first. Please sell within Africa FIRST. Otherwise we will not be adding value to our produce & we will not be working for the people that have enslaved us & looted everything from Africa for 500yrs. Africans must never encourage foreigners to come to invest in Africa, otherwise we are working for these investors as slaves which we refuse but when we allow them to invest in Africa then we are volunteer slaves for the foreign investors. More Africans must join their money together to invest in Africa. Tell your family & friends to join money together & buy many hectares of farm land & farm employing Africans to work & earn money instead of selling African land to foreigners. Africans must never allow slavery to continue in our mother continent. Africans working for chinese or american or European companies is slave trade in the Africa continent.
