    Nice video, thanks. I have a question, by the way and i dont know if it falls under referencing or something else. I am preparing a summary for a certain digital marketing subject, and i am preparing the summary in my own way, and it is just for myself. Now for every concept, i am likely going to go through a variety of resources. So, in my organized summary, where i rewrite points in my own words, what would be an easy method for me to note down or remember where i got that point from? Citations will be really long and complicated, it is just for my purpose to know where i got a certain point from. Is there any method?

    • @helpfulprofessor
      @helpfulprofessor  Před měsícem

      Hey, I don't think there's any super easy way to do this but a common method is to use something like a cornell notes sheet and write the source surname/title on the left column and your notes in the right. You can grab a cornell notes sheet here - helpfulprofessor.gumroad.com/l/cornell-notes

  • @Kamppi69
    @Kamppi69 Před rokem

    The problem is that many people are overreferencing. For example County A attacked country B, which everyone knows. Do I need a reference? From where? From somebody who mentioned this in his article without reference? I need advice for situations when you DON't have to reference. Writing academic text is pain partly because of this.

    • @Kamppi69
      @Kamppi69 Před rokem

      If I jump, I fall back. Everyone knows it. Do I need a reference? Why? Why not?

    • @helpfulprofessor
      @helpfulprofessor  Před rokem

      @@Kamppi69 For the first example - how many references ... my PhD supervisor taught me if there are a ton of sources you can reference, choose the best 3. In APA style, you can list them all in the same brackets (Smith, 2022; Jones, 2022; Thomas, 2022)
      For the second example - If you're explaining common knowledge, consider digging deeper and finding out debate / discussion about the topic. Any topic has a lot of academic discussion about it and your teacher will likely want you to dig under the surface and do deep research rather than just presenting common knowledge. E.g. why do you fall back when you jump? - Maybe some scientists or psychologists can give a bit of detail for an extra sentence explaining the mechanics behind it.

    Sir I am writing a 700 word essay in MLA format. The essay is about a central idea of a specific novel. I wrote my essay by only referring the novel. So how do I write the source. Can you kindly help?

    If I'm analyzing a single book, would I need to cite the author's name after every quote or would once be enough? And what should the reference section look like with only one book but going over several chapters?

    • @helpfulprofessor
      @helpfulprofessor  Před 11 měsíci

      If the one author wrote the whole book, you'll have to cite that same author after every quote, and also once in the end-text reference list.
      If the book has different authors for different chapters, you need to reference the chapter author each time.
      Aim for 2x references per paragraph, and always a reference after every quote.

      You'll need to ask your teacher what style they want it in. There are many different styles, like APA, MLA, Chicago.
      They all vary but a general format is:
      Author (Year). Title. Retrieved from: URL
      E.g.
      Smith, J. (2021). How to feed chickens. Retrieved from: www. chickenwebsite .com
