That was Great! I've been having the best time watching these interviews with the legendary tough guys I grew up watching... Jay Miller, Dave Brown, Larry Playfair, Brad May, Domi etc... All of them come across as really cool guys with some hilarious stories... Lyndon Byers, Basil McRae, Shane Churla, Craig Berube, Marty McSorley, Rob Ray, Kelly Chase, Tony Twist, Darin Kimble and Gord Donnelly were all tough as well.. A very different game back then...

Great interview with a well-spoken man. You can tell that each of Nilan and Playfair had utmost respect for each other. Nilan understands that Playfair was a force out there. Fans overlook Playfair as one of the best fighters ever. People consider Rob Ray as the Sabres' ultimate fighter, but Ray can't hold a candle to Playfair. In fact, Ray has said many times that he holds Playfair in awe - for good reason. By the mid to late of Playfair's career, when a scrum would occur when Larry was on the ice, Larry would skate to the middle of it, and say, if anyone wants to fight, they have to fight me. The scrum then broke up. Few wanted any piece of him. Even when Playfair didn't win, he put a hurting on the opponent. Playfair was one of the only true policemen out there. Most fighters, particularly guys like Nilan, went looking for fights in order to stir things up and act as an assertive force to open space for his teammates. Semenko, for example, was a blunt force object sent out to bludgeon a path for Gretzky. Playfair rarely looked for fights. Rather, he stepped up only when opposing tough guys tried to bully his talented teammates. It's a shame he hurt his back and nevet got the chance to win a Cup.

One of those guys that you don't hear about as much but Playfair was a big-time heavyweight in his day. A very good fighter who took very few losses. McSorley, Nystrom, and MacClellan are notable ones I can think of off of the top of my head. I heard a story that he one-punched Rich Sutter in a game, really hurting him and afterwards being sick to his stomach when he went to check on him. It was in an interview on the old Fried Chicken's Hockey Fight Site. Can probably find it on the Wayback Machine site.

Not enough people ever saw how enormous Larry Playfair was. I loved having him out in Los Angeles in the mid 80s. A few times he didn't dress and would just be sitting in the stands with a team mate or two. Totally chill and nice guy. LA was a great place to watch NHL hockey in 80s before Gretzky came to change the fan base

Larry lived in the Buffalo suburb of Grand Island when I lived there. Met my wife there as well.
He was one of many Sabres who lived there. Rick Dudley, Ric Seiling etc.
Met Larry at the local TruValue hardware and first thing he said was " Hey Partner!" like you knew him for years.
As personable as can be and a fine citizen on the local level.
Yet Don Cherry used to warn guys to leave Playfair alone because he can hurt people, just stay away!!

Knuckles ... another absolute gem of an interview! As a older Habs fan, I have a much better appreciation for you and all of your contemporaries (friend or foe) who played the game when you did. I was very impressed with Larry as a person and a player. You mentioned that we, the fans have better access to the former players and that the current players aren't as available. This is true to some extent, but since many of us are from your era, we prefer to hear your stories. For that, through your podcasts and Cameo videos, I am deeply indebted.

Larry always needed goalies and he was a couple years older in Elementary school road hockey, so I'd play goal to get in the game. Larry and his brother Jim were nuts about hockey and always played road hockey winter, spring and summer. I played on his brother Garvin's team. Man everybody loved all the Playfairs. I think Jim won't admit it but Larry's career was a huge detriment to his career. How could it not be in a time when good enforcers were a huge commodity. For the guys expected to fight it was a nightmare. Had to be. It got even worse as the enforcing became more specialized with the athletes training for it in boxing, weights etc and they became bigger like Derreck Boogard and John Scott. You can see Jim fight on here. He led with his jaw, so to speak by trying to keep his head out of reach, which sticks your jaw out. It got nailed especially with Joey Kocur. It was a good thing Jim opted out of fighting because he simply couldn't fight. Larry was a natural.
