  • This short video takes you behind the hoardings to get an inside look at HS2's first pioneering 'green tunnel', which is being constructed in Chipping Warden, Northants.
The tunnel is being built in sections, with a team of engineers working together in sequence to excavate the earth, lay the concrete floor, install the pre-cast elements that form the tunnel structure and prepare the trackbed within the tunnel, on which the high-speed HS2 trains will run at speeds of up to 225mph.
Unlike a normal underground tunnel, the 2.5km (1.5 mile) Chipping Warden Green Tunnel in Northamptonshire is being built on the surface using a pioneering off-site manufacturing approach to speed up construction and improve efficiency.
A relief road, which was completed in summer 2021, has helped to take HS2 vehicles - and other local traffic - away from the centre of the village of Chipping Warden.
Construction of the tunnel, designed to blend the high speed railway into the landscape and reduce disruption for communities, is expected to be complete in 2024.
Chipping Warden is one of five ‘green tunnels’ that are being built on phase one of the HS2 project, which is designed to improve links between London, Birmingham and the north, help level-up the economy and provide a low carbon alternative to car and air travel.
