You've been learning Spanish in the wrong place, mate. Get yourself some Spanish talking friends and hang out with them, listen to Spanish music, and watch TV shows, as you will be relaxed, so learning will be easier. Netflix is a great tool as they have multiple language settings, closed captions, and subtitles. School is only helpful for grammar, spelling, and writing of course, it does help, but you won't learn a language solely at school. Keep learning. 😎👍

Ironically, I met a woman who claimed to be from El Salvador, yet had a thick American accent when she spoke Spanish.
The thing about that is a lot of of Latin people love claiming their roots & being proud of their heritage but a lot of them are raised just like any american families. Expect for a couple of things. She most definitely wasn't raised in Venezuela but that great for her.

Just stop it people. Just because she screwed up one word doesn't mean she don't know spanish. I mean she clearly was stuttering as she was telling him the phrase which tells me that it's highly likely that what she was thinking and what she meant to say were two different things.
So to me, she just made a mistake. I'd never conclude or assume she doesn't know her own language because she used the wrong word in a fraction of a moment in time in which we were able to witness. Now if you were around her every day and she continued to use the wrong words or say things wrong, then you can say she don't know proper spanish. But one word, in one moment, on tv with millions of people watching and steve making you laugh....yeah I'm sure we all are perfect and aren't capable of making a wording mistake?
