All the PEDs and B.S. aside, Ben stood up to the mental game that is the Olympics and Olympic final. Lots of drug users have the power and speed but head-case out under pressure. Ben stood tall. Every guy in that final was using.

Bob Hayes would have blown them away on modern tracks and light running shoes

Strongly agree! They should have the PED sprinters such as Gatlin, Gay, and Powell to run on the same track as Bullet Bob did. I am sure their time will be at least 1/2 second to 3/4 second slower. Take the average of the 3 slower times and subtract from Bobby Hayes 10.0 sec. That should be a good estimation of how fast Bullet Bob was. Besides, the Great Bob Hayes was not fully trained as a sprinter. One of his football coaches was openly against him training for the Olympic 100m event. And of course, the Great Bob Hayes did not use PEDs. The only legit sprinter in known history to challenge Bullet Bob is Usain Bolt.

@@benthekeeshond545 Agreed, only Bolt vs Hayes would be a real contest, but 0.5 - 0.75s is a massive overestimation of the track advantage. Manufacturers claim 1-2% improvement per full lap for a synthetic track, so maybe 0.15s, another 0.1s maybe for proper modern spikes and 0.15s for a bit more training and technique improvements that Bullet had. Jesse Owens was biomechanically analyzed with motion capture and turns out even his 10.2/10.3 level in the 30's would have actually put him up with Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake just behind Bolt. The actual humans haven't changed at all really, just the tech. I reckon Bullet would be a legit 9.6 and regular low 9.7 guy. Pretty much untouchable til Bolt comes along with all his freaky mechanical advantages over 'normal' humans. The thing that strikes me when watching Hayes is how he looked so much more modern compared to his contemporaries, just pure power hammering down the track, the grand-daddy of modern sprinting.

@@malligrub A quiet good analysis, yet you're very wrong on at least 1 area: Hayes would gain at least a 0.25 second from training, not 0.15 s - he was a footballer and hardly trained as a sprinter, including up to the 10.06 seconds he ran in the Tokyo; and there he, if he'd had some real competion probably could've clocked 10.00, or maybe 9.98-9.99.
Anyway, I'm also sure that Hayes would've beaten Usain Bolt on any day, and run faster than 9.58 in today's competition.

Carl gave up running with 5 meters to go and did not lean. This is because he felt defeated and was too busy looking over two j k Ames to his right. He def would have broken Ben’s record on this very race when all of Ben’s races were erased. I see him running close to the 9.86 re later ran in Tokyo.

    • @johnnwako2488
