  • First Reaction to Black Sabbath, was no joke: An awesome balance between a strong and powerful vocal to a solid arrangement - this was an awesome introduction to BACK SABBATH which I until today, only knew by name. But now - that has finally changed!! Hard to sit still to this one.

Grandfathers of Heavy Metal. War Pigs is an obvious next. If you want a Punchy version of War Pigs catch their UN-remastered version of their live in paris 1970. Bill Ward, the drummer, takes his kit to school. This version also comes with an extra unreleased verse as well. Peace/JT

War Pigs, it's been mentioned a bunch, and I've liked every one I could see. One commenter mentioned the live version in 1970, Paris. It's just incredible. But also check out the studio version, or a cover by Puddles Pity Party, for a powerful reinterpretation. Or, and this is just me spit-balling, listen to all three, back to back to back. Like a War Pigs mini-marathon.

You are hitting one of the all time great bands and the first and most influential metal outfits. They had 'IT' right from the start, so to properly start your journey with this amazing band, do their first song from their first album, the song that freaked us all out in 1970: the song Black Sabbath, from the album, Black Sabbath, by the immortal band Black Sabbath. Do everything on that album as time permits, even if you listen to it when chilling out, that album will change your view on how they rate such legendary status. And that is just the first of 6 utterly great albums in a row, as good a run as their legendary contemporaries in the 70s. Good luck on your musical voyage, they will blow your mind! They sure did us, enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Great reaction Sabina!! And to think this was their 'throw away' track (it was made at the last minute as a studio request to fill up the album) - became one of their best known tracks!
In all honesty, their first six albums are all masterpieces of heavy metal! So much goodness (and variety) contained in each!
First album (self-titled) is more bluesy (check NIB, Behind The Wall Of Sleep, Black Sabbath); Second (Paranoid) gets darker, with some psychedelia thrown in (check War Pigs, Planet Caravan, Hand Of Doom, Iron Man); Third (Master Of Reality) is when basically 'stoner' metal is born (check Sweet Leaf, Children Of The Grave, Solitude, Into The Void); Fourth (Vol. 4) combines all previous (check Snowblind, Supernaut, Wheels of Confusion, Tomorrow's Dream); Fifth (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) gets some orchestral in the metal (check title track, Sabbra Cadabra (one of my favourites!), National Acrobat, Spiral Architect); Sixth (Sabotage) again combines previous (Hole In The Sky, Symptom Of The Universe, Megalomania, The Writ).
ALL are excellent! Vocals, musicianship, groove - it's all there. Godfathers of METAL! Cheers

Favorite tune : there are so many . "Symptom of the Universe" (give birth to thrash) "Planet Caravan" (an atypic space floydish track) "Snowblind" (both doomy and melodic) "Dirty women" (which contain the most epic guitar solo by Tommy Iommy) . Nearly all the tracks of the album "Heaven & Hell" with RJ Dio as vocalist , would deserve a reaction.

If you loved this, there's an amazing video of them doing "Warpig" at 1970 show in Paris! One of my favorite live performances by anyone.
Black Sabbath is really the primordial heavy metal band. The dark tone of their arrangement is the result of an industrial accident. The guitar player, Toni Iomi, lost the tip of his finger working in a factory. To play, he wore a plastic prosthetic but it required him to tune down the guitar so that the strings were easier to work with. That tuned down sound inspired countless heavy metal acts that came after.

Interestingly, their sound was inspired by pretty much where they were from and their life experiences, working in factories, growing up in a heavily industrialized city, a city (Birmingham) which has always been rough and violent. Which is one of the reasons their music has a metallic, harsh, driving sound and feel and why their lyrics tend to be dark. They almost single-handedly created the Metal genre, which was heavily inspired by Blues music which in turn is essentially a kind of Folk music.
A few years later, a similar situation occurred with the rise of early Electronic music as well wherein they were inspired by the noises coming out of the factories and their surroundings/environments where they grew up and lived. Again, young people expressing how they thought and felt in their own way. Again, at it's core, essentially a new kind of Folk music, although obviously not called that.
Across the pond in Germany, a similar sequence of events occurred as well in that - during the days of the USSR/DDR - being a musician wasn't considered a 'real job' and music was likewise heavily state-controlled, and this led to artists creating their own music/sound with non-musical instruments, which formed the foundations of/became Industrial music.
In all cases, they were or tended to be working class people either voicing their own opinions because they didn't feel they were represented or there was an element of anti-establishment sentiment.
Anyway, I went on a bit of a tangent there, but I just find it so interesting that there are these small, unrelated instances, and yet there are shared commonalities among all of them. It beautifully demonstrates that whilst we may come from different walks of life and backgrounds, fundamentally, as humans we all share roughly the same core feelings, attitudes and responses to things.

Quality band from my home city of Birmingham. This is quality metal. It’s a pity that Ozzy is a shadow of his former self, due in the main to hard drugs, which resulted in the band sacking him. I was lucky enough to see them at The Birmingham Odeon, supported by Van Halen…another fine band. This song is iconic, and provided a template for other bands to use.
