    I'm probably in the minority of people who played Rogue before Black Flag. Absolutely fell in love with it and completed it 100% - I even asked, "Why bother with Black Flag?"
    When I got BF for free in the run-up to Origins, I ate my previous words. Sure, Rogue has a special place in my heart, but The Caribbean is more gorgeous and Edward's story is one of the best-written.

    • @Basisreallycool
      @Basisreallycool Před 2 lety +11

      I too, played Rogue fist and, I too, massively found black flag to be far superior when I got around to it. Rogue had a fast paced story sure, but that meant you were hurried from mission to mission, making the ending to an already short game come sooner. Black flag had a leisurely paces story with just enough urgency that you felt you could explore a little in between missions. Whilst you may argue that rogues gameplay was more refined, it means nothing if you don't feel inclined to truly test it. The whole plot of Rogue was a poor attempt to get audiences interested and the new, introduced, characters felt borderline bad. Take the dude in the cowboy hat for example, who the was he? I'm sure I knew at the time but he and the others lack the memorability of black flags characters.
      Its a testimont to how good black flag is when Edward sits down and sees his dead friends drinking and you feel his emotion. Shay feels too detached in comparison.

    • @Largentina.
      @Largentina. Před rokem +3

      I agree 100% Also, when it comes to little environmental details and and the way Edward reacts to the geometry of landscape is definitely superior. For example, you know how when you go up to the corner of a wall in AC games, and you walk towards it so the character leans on it on and tilts his head to look around the corner? Well, on BF and Unity the characters react to whatever is beneath their feet dynamically. So if there's a rock or curb underneath he shifts his body weight accordingly.

    I really like both the games..but i think in case of ac rouge the story is somewhat cool because it was the first game where a thought crossed my mind that the assassin's are not always nice and the templars might be right this time.
    Only if ac rouge's gameplay was a little longer it would have been so underrated....but got to say Edward kenway has a better personality..🙂

    Assassin's Creed Rogue accomplished a lot by using pre-existing Assassin's Creed assets. Assassin's Creed : Liberation is another example but nobody talks about that as they executed it horribly.. It is slightly unfair to compare it to Black Flag, a fully fledged game with arguably many more new assets than Assassin's Creed III, although the gameplay of Assassin's Creed felt the same until Assassin's Creed Unity. I can give you a small last of some things Rogue took.
    -Naval combat system from Black Flag
    -The entire Davenport Homestead map (with some modifications)
    -The eagle compass from AC Multiplayer and the whispering noises from Multiplayer as well, I believe.
    -AnvilNext Engine from Black Flag, I believe.
    -Naval Fleet missions from Black Flag
    -British uniforms from Black Flag (slightly redone though)
    -Legendary ships (but some come with fleets now)
    -Man-o-war models, from Black flag (some man-o-war and legendary ship models were redone and used for Rogue)
    But Rogue fixed the small things we hated.
    -Introduced a faster and sleeker ship that felt arguably stronger than the Jackdaw.
    -A chance to see how the Homestead looked before the events of AC III (not much different)
    -Naval Fleet missions which you do not need wi-fi for (pirate gamers, arise!)
    -There was a glitch in Black Flag where you could dock the Jackdaw just before entering the legendary ship stage. You could then jump onto the ship, kill all the crew aboard, and destroy it with one shot. It was patched in Rogue.
    -Tailing missions were drastically reduced
    -Gave you the charge ability in the beginning of the game.
    and some other changes.

    It is worth looking around the Abstergo Entertainment building for memos and QR code sticky notes, getting files and information to flesh out the modern day setting and from the perspective of Abstergo to boot. Black Flag has a excerpt of the novelisation as one of these firewall minigame rewards. One memo in Rogue points out they’ve reused the Animus interface from the Edward Kenway project, and another mentions Arno from Unity. If you’ve read the books or played later games a lot more of these emails make sense.

    I'm really glad that the deciding factors for the plot were the length of Rogue and Achilles' character because I hear valid reasons for why both plots should get the point there. Edward's journey is a dream really (at least for me) as a young guy, being the captain of a crew, going around partying and not having a care in the world in your forties like life finally smiling on him after working hard his whole life, it's really relatable to a guys goals in life as an underdog so you want him to rise up the ladder. And Shay's story is a great addition to the whole Templar-Assassin conflict, the theme that neither side is all good or bad, which is great for the fans out there looking for something more related to the series' premise as a whole even having a direct impact on the other games III and Unity. It's a tie, but yeah, the short story brought Rogue down just a bit.

  • @jbcatz5
    @jbcatz5 Před 2 lety +7

    Black Flag’s theme of change is reflected not only in Edward’s development, but in the world he inhabits. The dream of piracy is becoming less and less of a reality as the British take more control, to the point that when Jenny at the end asks if they’ll see pirates Edward sadly says they’re all gone. He had to leave it behind so he could progress as a person and in his position.

It loses some points for basically ripping a city from AC3 to an extent, though New York is still a cool location, but I actually enjoyed the river valley and North Atlantic for their variety. The icy waters could be quite stunning, and I love the close quarters of the river valley, and all the little villages and settlements were fun to explore.
    I don't dislike Black Flag's open world at all, but after a while it can seem very "one tone". Havana feels more developed than Kingston, sure, but beyond that one location feels much the same as the next. Rogue wins out for me purely on variety.

Also I love you videos man I’ve been watching a alot of them recently since getting back into AC Unity and you make me want to go replay all of my favourite games again since its been so many years :)

    I agree with everything you said in this video. I love Rogue it’s probably my favorite game and Shay is my favorite protag but the game was messed up with having to borrow so much from Black Flag which had the time out into it to make that game good, and yeah it’s a good game engine which lets Rogue play well but I do enjoy the small differences in the gameplay which lets us be a Templar with flipping the assassination target missions which are very repetitive and I get bored rather quickly of them but now having to hunt the assassin instead.
    I enjoy the differences with the navel combat with the plucker gun, trail of fire and fire shots instead of the other gun, fire battles and chain shots. I enjoy traveling through both games but with the different environments you have to handle the ship more in the tighter space as well as you now being able to be boarded.
    I enjoy the small differences but does it make it the better game, I don’t think so. If they took the time to develop the game instead of working on both Unity and Rogue at the same time both games could have been better

    I bought the Rebel Collection for Switch, which has BF, Freedom Cry, Aveline, and Rogue, and played through BF (92% completion because I just can't bring myself to sail to all of those tiny ass islands with chests on them lol) over the course of about a month. Planned on going straight to Rogue next and started it only to find out that it is literally the exact same game as BF, just set in the north Atlantic. After realizing that, I decided to move on and play Unity instead. Played Unity for a few days until I noticed that AC Origins was on sale for like $8 on ubisoft, so I went ahead and bought that one and started playing it on Nvidia cloud streaming using my Joy-cons on my iPad (which actually works extremely well and gives me even better graphics and fps than my Switch did, surprisingly).
    I absolutely hated it at first just because I had just come off of playing the Ezio games, AC3, and BF, which are obviously very different game experiences (I just got my Switch in May and have been playing all of these games for the very first time, which has been a great experience) from the newer games. I was initially extremely overwhelmed by it, and I kept getting killed nearly instantly in Origins for so long until I got the hang of the combat in the RPG AC games and leveled up, but now I am actually really enjoying it a lot.
    Like I said, I'm a relatively new gamer and totally fell in love with the gameplay of AC2-BF, so all of a sudden dropping into an RPG was a huge change for me, but now that I am used to it I'm no longer overwhelmed and feel like I have a pretty good grip on it. I know people love to hate the RPG games, but I honestly think it will be seen as a great move that the series made at that point in time, especially now that we are about to see a return to the classic formula with Mirage. That said, I do still prefer the classic AC formula over the RPG stuff, and I very much plan to play Rogue at some point since it is basically like an extension of BF, which I absolutely love.
    All in all, I'd say it's a good thing that we AC fans have so many options. I mean you gotta admit, doing something like making every game just a re-skin of previous games, like Rogue basically is, got stale. Absolutely still worth playing, and I do look forward to playing through it at some point, so it's a good feeling knowing that I have another great classic AC game waiting for me when I am ready. Idk why I wrote all of this, I guess I just had some AC thoughts I wanted to get out lol. But yeah, Black Flag kicks ass, and by extension, Rogue also kicks ass too. It's a good thing that we have options in this series and that everything isn't all just the same game in a different setting.

    As you say in every video, I think, at least most of your videos… That these things really are subjective.
    And for what it’s worth I agree on many of the points about Black Flag, and that Rogue takes almost everything of its gameplay from Black Flag.
    But to me it comes down to the characters. I really enjoy Shays journey. I loved Black Flag, and loved the story with Edward too!
    I’ve played the heck out of Black Flag!
    But Shays story is so good, but it got too little screen-time, or in other words; didn’t get fleshed out enough.
    Shay really wanted to believe in what he did, and what he was fighting for, and he did.
    But he also was able to think for himself as an individual and not as a part of a structure or a machine.
    He wasn’t just a cog in a machine, which I feel many assassins and templars are.
    He is a human being with a conscience that weigh down on him when he does something that feels wrong to him.
    And he listens to that and acts upon it, first verbally, and when he is not heard he does what he thinks is best to avoid more disasters, and even though he himself betrays the brotherhood, the brotherhood betrays him.
    The story is something special!
    Shay meeting a man like Monro, and yeah… I can go on and and on.
    I really like this story! And prefer the story to Balck flags story.
    And to me, the story is what carry the whole game!
    Therefore I’ve never been able to play Oddesy… x)
    Still haven’t played Valhalla, and being off and on with Origins since it came out… xD
