      Yup! Narayan is Dukhi and Roopa's son, Ishvar's brother, and Omprakash's father. Like the rest of his family, he is a Chamaar.

    The novel "Such a Long Journey" by Rohinton Mistry was banned from the syllabus of Mumbai University in 2010 due to political controversy. The ban was initiated after complaints from Aditya Thackeray, a member of the Shiv Sena party, who claimed the book contained derogatory language about his grandfather, Bal Thackeray, and the Maharashtrian community. Following these complaints, the university's vice-chancellor used emergency powers to withdraw the book from the syllabus, which sparked significant public debate and protests from supporters of free speech and academic freedom.

      It is multi-layered.
      A fine balance is required to survive the city life. Also, a fine balance is required to balance hope and despair, poverty and sustainability in life. If we lose this fine balance, we lose our minds...

    As I said you explained well but I am not sure why is this book liked so much? Is it because it is awarded by West? If you all like this book, I am sure you will also like books about slavery of african people, how they survived and about World War 2 where far worst harassment was done. Also partly all these issues of survival were created directly or indirectly by British who ruled our country.

      Every book is a lesson to learn, I guess. It tells a story which might not be inspiring, but it teaches us how to live and how not to😊

      @@KalyaniVallathvery true but it hurts when particular type of books where India's image is depicted negatively as much as possible, are selected for awards especially by West and many Indians get carried away like Salaam Bombay film !!

    You explained very well, no doubt with some glitches like Dukhi's family including Narayan was killed because Narayan and two fellow villagers showed courage of not getting forced into voting certain candidate set up by thakor.

    The tone of the review is so inapt for the work a Fine Balance is, you make it sound like you are reviewing it for Primary school students.

      @KalyaniVallath  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Sorry for that. There are lots of beginners here who are benefiting from very simple introductions. People from underprivileged backgrounds, people with learning disability and so on always message us saying the simple introductions help them immensely to start reading and understand basics. We will try to maintain a balance. Thank you so much for the feedback.

      @@KalyaniVallath, I understand and appreciate the fine work you are doing here. So, the apology is totally unnecessary. ☺Even though the same book evokes different emotions in people, this book has an overall sombre tone and people should know that. I apologize if it came across as critical of your review, it wasn't my intention.
