I particularly like the idea of turning the pots to 10 and back a few times even the ones we don't use to sort of "exercise" them. Like old cars!

Great video! Deoxit is magic in a bottle. It's revived pots, pedals, and all sorts of solder joints.

Do you have opinions on the various ranges of tolerances between the different brands of pots and if it affects a guitar's tone in any meaningful fashion?

Great video. Thank you. You covered when pots go bad, but what I would love to know more about what makes a "good" pot vs. a "bad" one. When purchasing a guitar, I often hear from the salesperson that "This one has good pots". What does that mean? What do "good" pots do vs "bad" pots? Or, the salesperson will say "Yeah, this is made in Indonesia/China/Korea" so it's solid but not great. You may want to change the pots and maybe even the pickups". Why change the pots? To what? How much should I expect to pay?

That's the best serious talk I've ever had on the topic of Pot. I loved the pun and the video, but quick question my strat has volume pot being scratchy at the level 10 and If I strum and bump it the signal craps out, do I need a new pot or should I exercise the pot and work with it, I'm currently unemployed and trying to find the cheapest solution....bummer eh...I have a pot to replace it, EVH but I don't solder yet...

Pots on a guitar are like brakes on a car: wear and tear parts. They are not meant to last forever. The only difference is that higher quality pots will last longer before requiring replacement.
Personally, I replace pots as soon as they start scratching noticeably. It's cheap and easy to fix if you can do some simple soldering. You can temporarily band-aid fix a scratching pot with some deoxit or contact spray but that's only good for for a few weeks until the pot will start scratching again.

its Dunbar, or done bar,, isn't that a saying, hey I really dig your videos, thinking about a Japanese Vintage StratoCaster? Any thoughts> oh yeah pot going to be replaced but I can't decide between 250k 500k and I want one that can last and I swell the volume on if I feel so inclined. I'm not gentle on guitars...probably still alive becuase of guitar and my affinity to put all on the emotions into it, even the terrible ones, like anger, and frustration, but the funny thing is the most frustrating thing is when I can't play, work, and after work its hard to play for more than a half hour, becuase if I don't, the whole night is shot, sorry for rambling, listening to lord huron "the night we met". and its hitting the heart strings and I'm just rambling, sorry, NO EDIT MAN!!!!!! just a ramble WOOO, thank you for your videos, I dig em!
      YOU rock! @@GarysGuitarsUSA

Hi Marc, what would you’re diagnosis be of a volume pot on a brand new Prs Se SS that won’t shutoff at
0, sound continues to come out as if it’s still on 10.
Sweetwater sent me another SS but I actually like the first one better.
I’m thinking about asking them to take something off the price but wanted to know how much a replacement pot would be to install? Thanks for any help.

It's likely a defective pot. Unfortunately getting the guitar that you like better back will be impossible. If we were to fix it in our shop it's usually about a total of $30 including the part.

@@GarysGuitarsUSA Thanks for the info. I actually haven’t sent the original guitar back yet, so I may just see what they say about taking something off the price and keeping it.
