  • Somehow I found this video on my computer. Sokolov is one of my favorite pianists of all time. I also love how he interprets this particular piece. Enjoy!

    Grigory Sokolov is wise enough to get out of the way and let Bach and Siloti speak. This requires great humilty, which is also evident when he takes a single bow at the end of a performance and then leaves the stage without any fanfare. Pianists like Yuja Wang could profit from Maestro Sokolov's example. It takes a certain maturity for soloists to accept the fact that it's all about the music, with the musician serving as a dutiful midwife for the creation of the composer.

    • @SabatSch95
      @SabatSch95 Před 5 lety +4

      Sokolov has long been at the point where he doesn't need to prove himself. Younger pianists still feel the need to "show off", Sokolov clearly doesn't care about that. Yuja is technically brilliant, but I doubt people will remember her for her musical interpretations.

      космическое одиночество. Быть может, схожее с одиночеством человека, принявшего
      решение провидца, каким мы сегодня видим Э.Г. Гилельса 1966 года. Вряд ли стоит
      сравнивать две интерпретации. Уверен, что Гилельс «присутствует» исполнении

  • @jona2967
    @jona2967 Před 8 lety +77

    I just don't know what it is that makes me so extremely emotional about this interpretation. I compare it to Gilels and see that Sokolov playes the piece much straighter / less romantic. But as soon as he plays the first note I start crying. I can't explain why. Its pure magic! Gilels playing is also nice to listen to but maybe he is trying to do more out of the piece- its musical structure is actually quite simple (but of course genius) and I think Sokolov shows us the perfect rendition of this simplicity. Not too much but also not to less. He's a true master...

      Agree. It’s difficult to explain why it is so beautiful. One way I could possible attempt to describe it, would be the notion that there is a sense of hopelessness, something is lost not romanised. In essence, he is saying goodbye to something that no longer exists. I think this is achieved through the tempo and “cold” way he plays it. This gives the piece an almost tragic, rather than romantic feeling

Sokolov is in his own element - unique to him unknowable way to get under one`s skin, stay there and tear things apart gently only to put everything back together just as gently with the sense of deepest resolution. All in 3 minutes. This is art.

    If you're a pianist and have played this, you know how easy the notes are and how difficult it is to make them sing. Gilels used this as an encore over decades and, to my way of thinking, set a high standard. Great as Sokolov is in baroque (c.f. his readings of Bach's Kunst der Fuge) the opening bars here feel a bit stiff. Then he relaxes beautifully.

    This is NOT a "song," It is a "PIECE." Okay? A PIECE of music. Do not refer to it as a "song," A song is something that is SUNG. By humans. So tired of this. I hear Beethoven's symphonies being referred to as "songs," ("Oh, I love that song by Beethoven, you know, the fifth!") and I want to strangle them.
    They are "Preludes," "Quartets," "Trios" "Sonatas" "Polonaises," "Symphonies," "Concertos," "Fugues," "Serenades," -- WHATEVER! -- But NOT "SONGS!" Unless they are specifically SONGS, then they are not called "SONGS," OKAY????

    • @gwedielwch
      @gwedielwch Před 9 lety +1

      ***** I think you will find that the correct English translation of the German word 'lied' is the English word 'song'. All German-English dictionaries give the English word 'song' as the most appropriate translation of 'lied'. My point was a point about the English word ' song'. Not about the German word 'song'. The English word 'song' (like the German word 'lied') can be a song with words and without. Indeed, it can also be a poem which has not been set to music - the Biblical Song of Songs, or Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience.

    • @gwedielwch
      @gwedielwch Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Yes - I completely agree with you - arguing about the meaning of words is unlikely to help anyone appreciate the music. We usually know what another person is really trying to say. Correcting the way they say it is often simply an unnecessary distraction. Sometimes it can be unfriendly, or aggressive, or arrogant. (There is, I think, an example earlier in this thread - which actually provoked my first comment). I agree - let us concentrate on the music!!

      а что тебе в этом слышется? Мне слышется : правой рукой пробуждение желания и надежды, а левая рука демонстрирует решительность действий , которые растворяются к финалу ,толи .из-а недостаточной агрессии, толи из-за избыточной деликатности. Финал обидный и трогательный , а могло бы все закончиться победным апофеозом. Ну , нет хепи энда! И всплывают воспоминания из собственного жизненного опыта...

      @@user-uo4qv4ec7q А мне во второй части слышатся как падают тяжёлые и горькие слёзы Силоти в тоске по Родине.

    Why the heck did Siloti write the third measure DIFFERENT than what Bach wrote? He could have just kept the 16th notes as Bach wrote. But he didn't. I see no reason for the change.

    Zu schnell und zu hart! So sehr ich Sokolov bei anderen Komponisten mag, aber seine rusische Art zu spielen entspricht nicht Bach.

      Heinrich Kaspar Das Stück ist ja eine Überarbeitung von Alexander Siloti, deshalb seine romantische Interpreatitionsweise. Sonst würde es Sokolov ganz bestimmt anders spielen.
