They cut out all the struggle of their trying to maneuver this HEAVY machine into the EXACT POSITION it MUST BE IN to ever so easily slide the insert along the cabinet lip right into place. My insert, which BTW was not the acrylic I ordered, did not seem to fit at all! I am debating whether to exchange for the acrylic insert or get the money back on the insert. I'll now make some soapy water to see whether the waxy substance on the extension leaf will wash of or if I must send IT back, too.
We finally got almost all the waxy stuff wiped off the extension top by adding some vinegar to soapy water and wiping it on 3-4 times. I knew this might damage the surface, but since it was already damaged with wax, I took a chance. The last pass, I squeezed the liquid out of the rag onto the top and wiped it around with my hand, to let it sit on the wax for a minute or so. Then wiped it up and went over the top again with a clean, damp cloth. It now is about all off--enough that I don't think it will ruin any cloth. Fingers crossed.
Back to the insert problem, it did help to watch how, in this video, she put the right side of the insert down onto the groove and slid it to the right. So we first got the machine top even with the cabinet top by lowering the machine some, placing a yardstick across the hole the machine comes up in, then raising the machine to where it just touches the yardstick. Next, we slid the insert to the right, as I said above. We worked the machine left and right backward and forward. Time and time again. At this point we can get it almost right, with a little space to the left of the machine free arm.
Ikr! I'm gonna try to custom build my own. I've built my own work tables for upholstery work and cabinets, book cases, etc. Last year I custom built a hutch for my desk, for what my needs are.
