when a music legend unmatched by possibly anyone dies and they invite you to play one of their songs at the memorial, that's a sign you've got GOAT energy
I was 16 when I watched this live. Cried my eyes out the minute I realised what he was playing. My most favourite song of all time, and he did MJ proud.
Miles Davis in 1985 and SWV in 1993 ARE my favourite covers. Slide guitar, trumpet and harmonica have similar tonal colours. That IS what is important about playing an instrument. Trying playing along with a CD!
@@ilhamrj2599 when I saw this performance live in 2009 when MJ died, that's when I realized he was also a great guitarist. I'm not talking about when this popped-up on my feed 9 months ago.
You don't really need in-ears if you're not singing and just playing your instrument. That monitor in front of him is enough. As long as his guitar is in tune, it's fine. Let's put it this way, a concert pianist doesn't wear in-ear monitors no matter how big the venue is. There might be monitors, but you'll never need in-ears because you're not singing and don't need to keep your voice in tune.
@@cjsmith8319 I think those are like headphones some musicians wear in order to listen to themselves (what they're playing) among all the other instruments
Never heard such a moving piece. MJ created a masterpiece. JM injected more passion and soul into it than anyone else ever could have. Both GOAT’s in their own ways.
The song is a masterpiece, but it’s actually written by Toto’s keyboardist Steve Porcaro and originally played by Toto members. Michael’s vocals fit the song really well, but it’s not an MJ song originally.
When I was a kid my parents had a cabinet full of records that they never played any more. When I learned how to use the record player, I listened to all of them. Thriller was the one record I kept coming back to, and Human Nature was possibly my favorite song on that whole record. I remember watching this live after Michael's death and just blown away by John Mayer refusing to sing Michael's lyrics at the last second, and just knocking this song out of the park on nothing but his guitar. A true class tribute
This was more emotional than "Gone too Soon" performance. The song that made you feel joyful for so many years will now break your heart evertime you listen it. Playing the core song melody just to make us feel that we are missing him. We can only do so much, cover it with the best singers/instruments but the voice is gone forever. Like an echo, Like an art that is still lying arround somewhere but the artist has moved on. We are going to listen to it many times but It won't ever be the same again. Thank you John ! You unexpectedly broke but also won my heart on that day.
@PredATOr 009 isn't it obvious that he didn't play on this version? Four Toto members played on the original track. David Paich: synthesizer Steve Porcaro: synthesizer Steve Lukather: guitar Jeff Porcaro: drums Also, one of the song composer is Steve Porcaro.
@@rs3950 Steve did not even play this version at all, (this is JMs rendition) but I do have to say that Steve’s guitar parts were amazing on the original recording
When Michael Jackson passed away, I was 12 years old and couldn't fully grasp his significance in music and culture. At that time, I was learning to play the guitar, and his departure didn't hold complete meaning for me. However, his funeral became a pivotal moment that reshaped my perspective. I vividly recall John Mayer's rendition of 'Human Nature,' which deeply moved me and made me realize the beauty of my own pursuit: learning to play the guitar. As I've grown, I've come to better understand Michael Jackson's influence on music and how his legacy endures. That funeral moment, even though I didn't entirely comprehend it at the time, became a catalyst for my love of music and commitment to playing the guitar. It's astonishing how music can impact us even when we don't fully grasp its importance in the moment. My guitar journey since then has become a form of expression and connection, serving as a constant reminder of the lasting power of music to bring people together and transcend cultural and generational barriers
I remember watching this in Vegas when MJ died. I was on vacation. It was crazy to say the least. Everywhere was a memorial, every DJ mixed his stuff, all the stations had this on.
My mom was a John Meyer fan( R.I.P. Mom) and I was not but I was surprised when I saw him perform at mjs funeral and I definitely give him his props for being there and doing that song
Still can't believe he's gone. I just watch the 84 Victory Tour the last tour with his bros. (Jackson 5) so good!! Someone actually posted it from Toronto show I saw the Detroit show cuz we live in Windsor it was something I'll never forget as a kid. I had dreams of Michael meeting him with his glove!
This was almost too much when I first saw this, and I still feel that way now. I’ve loved MJ since I was 4 years old, and JM since my early 20s. To see and hear one person I admire perform beautifully for someone else I admire that is gone was too heavy. I’m proud of John for doing this so elegantly and only wish Michael could have been alive to hear it.
Too bad TOTO didn t play it on the funeral... Those guys made the Thriller album and MIchael Loved them. But the record company decided. Anyway, Mayer did great.
The family asked him to play it at the memorial service. It’s an incredibly well done cover and the way he phrased the passages adds small nuances to the song that can only be done instrumentally.
I always had a major problem with how the audience reacted to this and the entire memorial service. They treated it like a concert instead of mourning a human being passing.
nah he doesnt have the pauses like JM does. A good musician vs a good guitarist is knowing when NOT to blaze up and down, giving the rest of the song space to breathe. Sure Asato would have prolly done a more melodic version, but it would just be his notes and his skill. Mayer knows when to let the ensemble take over and when to come in, when to harmonize, just brilliant that this was a one off thing and he pulled it off cuz he's an impromtu whizz.
He would not have. He doesn’t have Mayer’s ability to orchestrate songs, plus he’s a bit more abstract and wouldn’t have been able to keep the pop song..well pop. And I’m not saying he’s a bad guitarist. He’s a really good guitarist, and I really enjoyed Cascadian Loop and 70x7 and a lot of his other tracks, but he’s not on the same level as John Mayer. Perhaps in a technical sense he might be, but again, Mayer is the superior in the orchestration.
M sorry.... I think and respect J the Mayor skills on the Guitaarr.. But he cant Pluck . This ... not even close. He can play the shit out of the Blues.... This is a very Different Soul.... dont fk with it
So, some of the greatest guitarist's in the world consider Mayer to be a genius guitar player, yet here we have rayfonseca1644 saying otherwise. Get on yer bike lad.
He plucks pretty decently and the way that he does it is extremely difficult to replicate even after hours of practice. I mean the guy is playing lead phrases, chords, AND the bass in the first passage. What more do you want from him?
I like how he doesn't say "thank you" or anything into the mic, he just walks off. That was the move for that moment
Funny thing about this is people still won’t give John Mayer his props. He’s a master guitarist and did a beautiful song justice
are u on drugs?????
Yes, I 'am I agree with you
Totally agree. They shouldve let him done the whole thing without band. That took away the magic imo

Ultimate respect he showed MJ here. You can't beat the original version so doing an instrumental with nice backing vocals was perfect for the occasion
That tone is too good
That guitar is literally weeping.
So respectful, no fancy solos
thats not john mayers style, he lets the song breath

Qué belleza, personalidad, sencillez y elegancia! Tan preciosa y preciada interpretación a la guitarra de John
