You’ve just reminded me again Del of one of the reasons I gave it up. Reason being-once you touch other sparks bodge jobs then you’re responsible thereafter if anything goes wrong. You have just inherited all the slap dash electrical work that’s been done in the property. All the previous spark/s will say if anything does happen and it comes back to them “I wasn’t the last man in, it was yer man Del off CZcams” A most unfair situation..
Just a general word of warning, seeing that textured ceiling, it might contain asbestos. Not a high content, it's not as dangerous as some asbestos products but still you should be aware of it if you are doing any work, especially cutting holes through but even removing those downlights could dislodge some material.
I've just this weekend replaced a bathroom extractor fan with timer. The previous sparks had wired the Perminant live to the fan in with the switch live to the fan @ the JB for bathroom light. So, the fan only worked when light was switched on, but didn't run on after the light was switched off😏🤪🤨
I agree George having used it once for the first time. I was quite impressed at the time saving. Going in after someone else’s lash-up is a problem, because the client having paid out once is going to be reluctant to pay out again. However, this client seems reasonable.
The thing is even if you tested the property and all the reading are ok you would cert it as satisfactory. This is the reason alot of sparks would just replace the lights test and go with no other investigation whatsoever.
In Canada, having a junction box in a wall is completely illegal. Talk about a mess. I'm surprised that in the UK, it sounds like you can do that as long as it is done properly. Regulation here requires an access.

Could the client not have been persuaded to have kinetic switching for the kitchen lights? It would have saved butchering the wall & coving
