I wanted to make a companion video to my favorite metal genre/subgenre video by talking about some of the genres that don't (usually) click with me all too much for one reason or anything/genres I have some criticisms of. What would be your picks for the genres/subgenres that no matter how hard you try, usually just isn't your cup of tea?! I can't wait to hear; as well as your thoughts of this list and if you agree or disagree! I'm always down to discuss and find new recommendations to change my mind because I simply love music lol. But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

The only metal genre I absolutely don't want to touch is NSBM. I don't even care if the music is good or not; why would I want to listen to a genre that's built around the adoration of an ideology that is racist, ableist, homophobic and transphobic to such a degree they actively tried to extinguish these kinds of people when I'm trans and have autism myself? I'm not one to hate anything but this is an exception.
Modern metalcore: I grew up on 2000's metalcore but modern metalcore sounds bland and uninspired to me. Don't get me wrong, there are some great bands in that scene but overall from what I've heard it's not for me.

I absolutely love gothic metal, consider it my favorite niche within metal, and even flew from California to Germany just to catch Draconian live, but I totally get your complaint lol. It's easily the least "metal" subgenre around and definitely has no idea how to be concise. It also doesn't help that most of the best gothic metal bands (The Gathering, Tiamat, Katatonia, etc.) seemed to stumble into the genre, were great for reasons that had nothing to do with being metal, and left the genre as easily as how they came in. But there are some bands that do have the heaviness to back it up without being too polished, namely early Tristania (people forget how nasty that tone is), 90's Katatonia, some Novembre black metal sections, and turn-of-the-century My Dying Bride (The Dreadful Hours especially). And people forget how much gothic metal influence is in Agalloch's music too!
Anyway, as to my least favorite metal genres: Probably glam or drone, but more controversially: Every time i listen to a traditional heavy metal album, they will have one or two songs that kicks up the speed and goes full USPM and I think "this sounds great, why can't they just do that again?" and feel disappointed in the entire rest of the album.

I am also a huge fan of power metal but I can see what you mean with your points in this video but I am glad you at least like Blind Guardian that is one of my favourite bands. I also have not dived too deep in gothic metal but there is one I like that is more symphonic metal they have relativly short songs with one exception. The name is Blackbriar only has 2 albums and three EPs just got signed to a record label and I have seen them live six times. In my opinion they are really good at building atmosphere in their songs, my first reactions to one of their newer tracks that I heard live was: "wtf this is so creepy, I love it." Which is about Bloody Footprints In The Snow which is one of their longer tracks at about 5 minutes. They sing about folklore and sometimes very personal things, The Seance is about feeling ignored disguised as a song about ghosts.

Even as someone who can definitely enjoy and vibe with some Power Metal, enough that you could consider me a fan of it, I 100% get where you're coming from with your criticisms. I love what the subgenre is trying to be but I also feel like it has a really bad tendency to blend into itself and just wind up repeating a lot of the same stuff. Power Metal is something I enjoy when it succeeds at being original and actually does something that will stick with me.
I think one of the biggest reasons a lot of Power Metal falls into that trap I call blending into itself is because they go for those fantasy and/or sci-fi themed lyrics you talk about, which can absolutely work and sound beautiful, but a lot of Power Metal tries to achieve this by just throwing either vaguely fantastical or vaguely futuristic sounding lyrics together without any actual coherent meaning, so there ends up being no actual story to tell with something of value in the lyrics, instead we just get LARPer mumbo jumbo trying way too hard to sound cool.

@@TheMetalTempestYT It's for these reasons that I actually think one of the better Power Metal acts I've heard was Rhapsody of Fire in their earlier days. To my understanding their first several albums were telling a consistent story about a hero simply known as the Warrior of Ice going on a quest to defeat evil and defend his homeland, it's easier to appreciate the music because of this, there is genuine meaning to the lyrics and not just a theme for the sake of a theme.

Like You feel about Nu Metalcore, that´s exactly how i feel about Deathdoom. Love me my Doom, love me my Death, but in combination, it almost always fails to click with me. Strange, but, well, if you just mix together the worst parts of both genres ... it just fails more often that not.
Other genres i cannot get into are:
    - P*Grind - Strage because i do love Goregrind and most other grind subgenres
    - Power Metal - Just can´t stand any cheese on my Metal, which is why a whole lot of Symphonic and Gothic stuff falls flat too, but Power Metal is kind of the tip of the iceberg in this sense, ... and then there´s this hypermasculin thing and the glorification of warriors / war, that turns me off so badly. Sorry to Helloween, You were my first love in metal and You will always be.
    - Practically all of Black Metal, except in DSBM there were moments where it clicked with me, and the first Mayhem is good, but otherwise ... I just can´t stand this "We are so dark and evil" attitude. I want my Metal pissed off, scream the shit out and then it´s gone; with most of the Black Metal i heared i feel worse after listening. I don´t want that. Dwell in Your darkness if You will, i won´t come with You. Get over it. Oh yeah, and as an anti dogmatic thinking person, dogmatic anti christianity is about as attractive to me as dogmatic christianity. Get over that too.
    - Melodeath - just boring

  • @Stevie-Steele
    @Stevie-Steele Před 23 dny +1

I think our favourite and least favourite genres aren't defined by the BEST bands but rather by how much we can find enjoyment from a "mediocre" example of that genre.
For example - I LOVE music in most Metal subgenres but Metalcore is near the bottom of my favourites because I just can't tolerate listening to mediocre Metalcore anywhere near as much as I can tolerate listening to mediocre examples of my favourites - Trad Heavy Metal and Power Metal.
Speaking of Trad and Power - I feel like there is a whole spectrum of bands that are called "Power Metal" which might appeal to people who think they don't like Power Metal.
Bands like Iced Earth, Virgin Steele, Crimson Glory, Slough Feg, Jag Panzer etc. etc.
They're all in the "US Power Metal" side of things, and I feel like that's generally a big rougher and more aggressive.
The thing I love most about Power Metal is the feeling of fighting and defiance.
Power Metal that feels "triumphant" in a way that feels "unearned" mostly rings hollow for me - that's why a lot of Euro-Power don't resonate with people - it's just too "happy".
Power Metal isn't music that people actually RELATE to emotionally - it's music that people ASPIRE to emotionally.
I actually prefer music that brings out an aspirational and motivational side of myself rather than relating to or resonating with feelings I have.
So in the best Power Metal - I feel like it's music that does battle with the darkness, as opposed to the embracing of darkness that comes with other Metal subgenres.

I don’t really dislike any subgenre, but I think some subgenres are less capable of producing catchy stuff given certain conventions and pressures to remain marketable within the scene among all the other bands playing the exact same style.
Strong agree on black metal. The loud minority of elitist nerds will hate on me for it, but I much prefer bands like Panzerfaust, Necrophobic or Schammasch to raw black metal or whatever is considered trv kvlt these days.
As for doom metal, I think there’s a lot of potential there but I think they should utilize more of the many tools they have at their disposal. Tempo changes can make a doom song sound super heavy.
A lot of “brutal” subgenres try to out-brutal each other which often ends up with a monotonous wall of noise and blastbeats that is simply boring to listen to IMO.
I have a love/hate relationship with prog metal, since it can get far too preoccupied with “being prog” to the point of sacrificing listenability and innovation.

  • @lordender_kitty_official

A lot of modern metal music, while not all of it is bad, mostly just feels boring and like it's trying to be popular. Stuff like metalcore just feels like someone tried to make metal but listened to way to much pop and stuff like that. It just feels like a pop band tried to turn into a metal band. And don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good modern music, it's just that a lot of modern metal just doesn't hit like the 90's and earlier. Death metal also just sounds like it's trying to be cool and scary but when i can't even tell that they're speaking english and their voice just doesn't even sound cool, why would I bother listening to it? Some stuff that I love is actually some songs off of the Aske album by Burzum but the difference with that is that his screaming sounds fuckin' sick. Specifically the song Spell of Destruction. It's got a slow, groovy riff and it sounds like the screams of the souls of the damned or some shit. It's awesome.
Also, I've noticed a lot of good music coming out of Australia in recent years. It's not all metal; there's a lot of good psychedelic rock and stuff, but, for instance, the band Battlesnake. They're a heavy metal band from Australia. They released their first song in 2019 I think. Nightmare King. It's awesome. They're probably super underrated in my opinion and they're probably my second favourite band (just below King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, who are also Australian). Check them out. I think they said in an interview once that the way they started was they were watching some people playing in the tv and one of them said, "We can do that better", and proceeded to, in fact, do that better. lol.

The Black metal vocals. I'm a Death Metal guy, I love my guttural growls. Layer it with high screams ie. Deicide then that provides some evil sounding vocals.
