Hello, i LOVE your channel's name! I've been at this since 94 in Times Square NYC, my mate Richard painted on Young Street in Toronto back in 92 - STOPPED Young Street. Personally, when I use canvas, I apply gloss white over it and let it dry overnight then paint away, or for a different Bob Ross style wet on wet paint straight away! (LOVE BOB) Also, the paper I use is Carolina 15 point one-sided gloss paper (think photo paper without the silver halides), hope this helps. Also this is MUCH cheaper than poster board and much easier to frame afterward
too- most paper dealers will get this for you. All the best Simon

I like the poster board from Walmart. It's a 6 pack of 22x28 for like 5 bucks. I cut them into 11x14 and or 22x14. I find the art skill ones thinner than I like to use. Canvas are great to paint on but storing them is way harder. I can fit 500 posterboard pictures in a portfolio. Not so much with canvas 🤣 they take up alot of space

The rust 2x is great paint for its thickness, epic texture creation etc, but for shadow work and mist effects using a cheaper brand with much finer particles due to heavy solvent components is the go. Also, rust 2x is great for stars but if you don’t do several off target flicks first to rid the excess the stars end up way to big instead of fine specs. I’m no expert just wanted to share my experiences and thoughts with the community of artists we belong to. Great vid and thanks for taking the time to make it. Canvas is more challenging in ways but makes for a better wall piece as poster board/card looks naked without a frame and glass in a frame casts glare so canvas always holds most appeal

I love canvas. I do all kinds of stuff on canvas, but I was really expecting the spray paint, which, admittedly, I have almost no experience with, to just die on the canvas surface, but the finished product looks very realized, refined, and nuanced. It is never going to look as dynamic or "alive" as the glossy surface, but I have to say I think it comes out ahead in the side to side comparison. Maybe I have a bias in favor of canvas, but I can only report what my eyes are telling me.

to save some money when you are just starting out the poster board from dollar tree works ok, just make sure to use the opposite side from the one with the barcode, for a $1 you get two 22" x28" pieces which you can cut in half for paintings and/or stencils. Also, as sprayers who rely heavily on stencils and texturing, we tend to exert more pressure on a canvas then a traditional brush or pour artist so I think the solid board canvas gives a more predictable result then the stretched canvas, especially at the larger sizes we usually paint at. One thing i haven't tried yet but am planning to is to apply my own coat of gesso, the store bought canvas's are supposed to already be gesso'd but i don't think they have very much. just a side note, the dollar tree has recently started selling both stretched and solid art canvas's, the largest is only 8x10 but it's something cheap to practice on, Ive done a few acrylic pours and chain pulls on them and they work ok....

The paint soaks in more with canvas than poster board but it’s still quite workable. Probably take 20% more paint to get similar results. I would skip the gesso if using rustoleum as it does have a primer in the enamel but that’s just my two cents. Clear coat might be work trying but I’ve never attempted that. Thanks for the comment

I was quite happy with how the canvas turned out. It's a little more costly on material and I would love to pick up poster board just to give it a try, but I am pretty happy with it.
Also rust-olium here is €11.99 a can so if you have any other brands that might work I would greatly appreciate that.

I know this is an old video but poster board is everywhere and always has been. It's one of the things that immediately comes to mind when I think about elementary school that's how popular poster board has always been. Anyone having issues I'm sorry but there's something wrong with you. Any store with an art supply selection WILL have it. Walmart, Walgreens, Target, Grocery stores, craft stores like Michaels etc. I've even seen it in small corner stores for inner city school kids to easily find. That's crazy thinking it's not available.
Anyone who builds models knows why the glossy side of the poster board IS the correct way to use spray paints on paper over a coarse/matte surface.

I work with both myself but when I work with canvas on occasion and I found that if I prepped it with a coat of white paint and let it dry overnight, sometimes I will put a a second coat.I find doing that reduces saturation into the mesh. I also tried a wooden canvass as well and found if coated it as well it seals the wood and reduces saturation in to the wood. I would like to hear what think of that technique.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already in the comments or if it's common knowledge regarding canvas painting, but canvases need to be prepared before painting. You don't need anything fancy, just spread an even layer of white acrylic paint making sure to get full coverage. This will help stop the over absorption of paint and give you a smoother working surface as well.

Not really necessary when painting with Rustoleum Painters Touch as it’s paint and primer in one. You need a bit more paint to fill the grooves but no need to gesso or base coat first.

@@Aerosotle Thank you for clearing that up as thats something I did not know regarding Rustoleum brand. I am new to the spray paint game, I mostly paint with acrylic and recently began using Montana brand spray paints as that's what's mainly supplied where I shop. At this point in my career I always drop a base coat with an acrylic and foam brush for any canvas I sell. Also thank you for the video as well, it was quite helpful

Comic book backer boards are also an option. The size is smaller but the material is quite similar.

In australia i searched for a month to no avail until finally i found Image Science Advice who sent me a sample.
    I purchased 50 A3 size 680 gsm posterboards.
These have a satin sheen both sides and are perfect for spray paint art.
My thoughts on canvass, I've found because of the textured surface the planets outer circumferences arent as sharp or defined especially on large moon etc like dinner plate size.
Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist.

Shipping is expensive but when you work out price on each board its ok.
The boards arent flimsy and are archival so theres no acid in the paper.
      Happy painting.

@roger perner I am new to spray painting and also having difficulty finding the right surface in Oz (SA). A lot of confusion is over the name of the board. Are you talking about the backing board for prints from them. Or a different product.

I try and use paintbrushes with spray paint and it makes them super crusty I use paint thinner on them then it makes them really puffy and the brush starts falling apart is there anything I can do?

I just use a rag to squeeze out excess paint from bristles .
Let it dry it will go hard but next you use it work a little of the new colour into the bristles, the hardened paint softens, you then wipe paint out again and bobs your......
      Thinner maybe too harsh.
I used cheap brushes once, after bristles littered my painting i bought proper hair brushes.
Trying to learn cardboard "brush" technique.
      I can't keep a flow going though.

Like em both but I think the canvas is a nicer thing to hang up for display. More artsy farts than like a poster. :)

Late to the party here! I'm in Ireland. Any Irish artists know what poster board is called in Ireland? No one stocks it here. Is it Bristol Board? Also can this type of spray painting be done on photo paper? Thanks in advance for any responses!

My poster board never had that nice glossy reflective finish. Like a mirror. After I do my painting and put the clear gloss spray over it, it never had that nice reflective finish. Is it my paint or the poster I’m using? What do you need to use to get that glossy reflective finish?

    • @Aerosotle

I use Art Skills Heavy Weight board. It does have a gloss side. Then use Rustoleum painters touch. Be sure to get gloss as they have other finishes as well (Matte, Semi Gloss)
