    Thank you so much for sharing this video. It must have been a very stressful hour for the marine life, especially tide pool, on the US west coast. God bless the Japanese for all they went through.

    Yachats is one of the most beautiful stretches of coast I’ve ever seen. Been through all of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, New Guinea, and so on. Big Sur, Florida coast, Costa Rica, Panama, Japan. Yachats is right up there. Thank god it didn’t get totaled.

    It's not the height that makes a tsunami wave dangerous, it's the wavelength. That's what makes it seem like the water just won't stop coming.

    • @callmeshaggy5166
      @callmeshaggy5166 Před rokem +2

      Exactly most traditional waves are just splashes. The water behind a tsunami is as high as the wave itself.

    • @Volcano-Man
      @Volcano-Man Před rokem +3

      It is the height the wave or waves surge to and the distance inland.
      All tsunamis behave like shallow water waves, and travel according to V in metres per second equals the square root of gravity - taken as 10 m sec^2, multiplied by depth of water. A normal nice sunny day at the beach type wave will have an amplitude of about 10 metres, meaning its velocity is about sqrt (10×10) and therefore it has a velocity of 10 metres per second. A tsunami caused by a thrust fault along a subduction zone for example will occur in about 4000 metres of water. Hence its velocity in metres per second, is equal to Sqrt(10x4000) = Sqrt(40000) = 200 metres per second or about 720 kilometres per hour.
      Now take a column of water 4000 metres high with a density of 1.1x10^3 kg m^3 - it has a mass of 4400000 kilograms. That column is moving at 200 metres per second, and force equals mass times velocity, so that column now is transferring a force of 880000000 kilograms outwards and there are several hundreds of kilometres following it - all transferring that force. Meaning as it comes ashore the force is massive and irresistible and don't forget it almost always comes ashore as a fast rising tide, not a massive wave as portrayed in Hollywood style docu-dramas. Frightening to witness, and either you run for your life on a 'Everyman for themselves basis,' or stay and try to help you are likely to die. Not a nice choice either way.

      @@Volcano-Man The distance a wave reaches inland depends mainly on the wavelength and the height to which the terrain rises.

      @@Diana_L. I know. It also depends on the smoothness of the terrain.
      I am trying to explain a natural phenomena to laymen, in terms that they can understand. I am actually a geologist, a vulcanogist and tsunamis, and believe me trying to explain to people who want simple answers is not easy.
      Ignorance has killed more people than we will ever know. There is a well known photograph of a person who went out on to the breakwater at Hilo, presumably to see if the 1960 tsunami was as bad as was being forecast. In tbe background is the surf of tbe tsunami as it approaches. One wonders at what point did that person realise the scientists were right and he was about to die!

    This would be terrifying the power of the ocean and how strong the RIP currents are its very scary being dragged out to see my sister and I nearly drowned as kids by a rogue wave in majorca 1991 we saw this sky go so black like night time then all off a sudden we was under water we was hit by a massive wave and swept out to sea my mum I my sister had to be rescued. Coast guards was sent out 3 people on the beach died the wave damaged buildings restaurants hotels up to 2 miles away. Ambulances came my family and I was ok but my thoughts go out to every one who died that day and to the waves in japan and the 2004 earthquake and tidal waves in south asia. It's like in iceland there is a beach there that claimed lives there are signs up on this particular beach saying there is snicker waves that get you when your not aware of your surroundings. I have great respect for the sea ocean because it can really take you away and you are swept away and drown. My thoughts are always with Japanese people with that earthquake in 2011

    ان زلزلوا او احرقوا او دمروا او حطموا او اغرقوا

    ويقال ان صوت الرعد حسبما ورد في الاثر

    هو في الاساس رباني ومن غضب الله الجبار
    ومن شدته انه اذا مر على نهر شقه نصفين ورفع قاعه الطيني وذر ترابه في الهواء
    وكذلك يقتلع البنايات والبيوت والاشجار ومن ثم رميها في مكان بعيد مهما كانت ثقيلة وعظيمة
    ويحمل الجسور والقناطر والخزانات الكبيرة ويدور بها وكانها عود ثقاب ويلفها كالمروحة من شدة قوته العنيفة
    ويحمل معه الحيوان والانسان الى عنان السماء ثم يلفظه خارج الغلاف الجوي او الكرة الارضية وكانها عملية تفريغ اي شفط نحو الفضاء الخارجي
    مما يتسبب بخسائر مادية جسيمة وهائلة تقدر بتريليونات الدولارات
    وهذا غيظ من فيض وهذا بعض ما يجري في امريكا

    Quit being so amazed at the speed with which the water returns to the ocean.
    Coming in at hundreds of miles per hour due to plate tectonics is them amazing aspect.
    Simple gravity is why its goes back fast. The ground is lower, so gravity does its job.
    A plane taking off is amazing.
    Pushing a rock off a cliff, cavemen could do that.
