    I had numerous requests to review Fifine microphones, specifically the K670 USB Condenser microphone - and it sounds pretty good, but the driver issues make it a tough one to recommend, honestly.

    I checked out the cheaper little brother the K669B which go for around $30, and pretty surprised with how that one sounded for a cheap USB mic too. I now recommend it over the snowball for anyone looking into something basic to get started with. No driver issues, it just worked.

    At what point will USB/digital become as good if not better than XLR? if digital cameras can reach the threshold of film then audio will eventually right?

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před 5 lety

      If you wanted to, you could make one right now, it's not a technological limitation. There's merely no point making a high-quality USB audio interface and then putting it into the microphone body, you'll make more money if you sell them as separate items.
      And from my point of view as electrical engineer, there really isn't more than a couple cheap components spared by integration. It just makes no sense. There's a fundamental difference to cameras there where digital image acquisition is completely its own thing from chemical one, but with a microphone to USB, you have the same kind of signal path regardless!

      Time will give you answer.

    • @MaxoticsTV
      @MaxoticsTV Před 5 lety

      The only benefit of XLR is reducing noise by cancelling out electrical interference in the cable ("balanced"). Assuming no interference, there is should be no difference between an XLR and 3.5mm or phono jack mic. A USB mic contains a pre-amp between it and the computer. An XLR mic must first go through a pre-amp and then have that signal digitized for USB. Therefore, I'm sure there are pre-amps in USB microphones that are better than pre-amps in XLR mixers/interfaces. The biggest problem with USB mics is you can't put anything between the pre-amp and the analog to digital converter, like a compressor or limiter. You can use them with the digital signal, but that's not as good as having the analog signal to work with. So to answer your question, USB is as good as XLR/whatever if you can get a clean/optimized signal from the mic without noise or clipping. If you get noise, you may be able to clean it up better with a better pre-amp BEFORE digitization.

    What settings did you use on the mic to get the best quality out of it?

    • @FIFINE
      @FIFINE Před 4 lety +1

      Hi there, though the gain setting is one of the most crucial factors that makes a mic sound different. But the other factors cannot be neglected if you want to have the best sound quality.
      Specific to K670, it's better to have dial at around 60% while computer input at about 80%. But it's not set in stone, you had better to click open any recording software that has voice meter, to have volume not going over -12 dB while you speak to the mic.
      Next it's about the speaking range, keep the mic 3-5 inches away from mouth, the closer the better. If there's an arm stand available, you should be able to easily keep the mic in a close range. Then your voice will appear more engaged in front of the mic, that means it will pick up less bouncing around sound. You will find the sound quality is up for another league.
      Overall the best method to have great sound quality is to setup the use environment (if the mic is not defective). And the treated room can be done with ease, and here's our blog for your reference: fifinemicrophone.com/blogs/news/how-to-make-an-acoustic-treatment-on-a-budget

    • @FIFINE
      @FIFINE Před 3 lety +2

      Um, it's not always the higher-priced one is better (only if you got enough budget and don't mind the spending). If you're going to choose between these two, it's all down to your application. The capsule of K669 is smaller, and you have to put the arm stand closer to compensate for the bass. And without the low-latency headphone jack, you may run into problem when doing podcast and you want to hear yourself in real time. The main difference about the tone is that K669 doesn't give that kind of all-round sound as K670 provides. But there won't be quite noticeable difference if your main use is gaming. And you don't need that headphone jack to hear yourself either in gaming.

      Depending on the loudness of your voice, it could be good to set the dial level at around 60%. Or it would be more precise to click open a software to have the level meter gauge to find the more suited dial setting. Keep the software meter bouncing around -16dB to -12dB, the sound quality coming out should be pretty good.

      If you still get the static when you set the volume dial to 0, I think there's not the problem of microphone. Please try testing the mic on a laptop without charging cord plugged in to see if it's the grounding issue.If laptop is not available, could you bother to have your PC powered by another wall outlet? Next, to eliminate the possibility of a broken USB, just test with another one.
      Then, set the mic dial at 70%, computer at 80% and the best speaking distance ranges from 3 inches to 5 inches. At last, test the mic with different positions on your desk to see if the static is still there.

      As you choose the K670 as default output and enable the monitoring feature on the computer system or software, you will get the audio without latency.

      Since you are confused , we will briefly introduce the difference between three FIFINE products, K669B, T669, K670. First off, the T669 is the update version of the K669B, cuz the T669 get the accessories to have the better sound. For vocal or instrument, K669B still do the job, though may not fit in perfectly. But there is updated model K670, which is quite suitable for that music production aspect, and you can use the K670 to monitor your voice while recordng. K670 has lower noise level and get warmer but still the same clear sound.

      @@becca5703 The K670 cardioid pick-up pattern and the 16mm capsule (2mm larger than Snowball) make your voice more engaged, limiting background sound and focusing on your voice. No need to eat into the mic for radio podcast sound quality. Besides, it is just the USB Plug & Play microphone so you dont need to use with the interface. But if your use environment is not so quiet, and you're more concerned about the noise instead of tone, then T669 with an arm stand is also pretty good for recording or singing.

      It seems that you got lots of static sound. If so, first off, try testing the mic on a laptop without charging cord plugged in to see if it's the grounding issue. If laptop is not available, could you bother to have your PC powered by another wall outlet? Next, to eliminate the possibility of a broken USB, just test with another one. Then, set the mic dial at 70%, computer at 80% and speaking range for around 5 inches. At last, test the mic with different positions on your desk to see if the static is still there.

    Is this better than the k669?

    • @FIFINE
      @FIFINE Před 4 lety +2

      It depends on your use. If it's mainly about gaming, K669 could do the job well. When you main use is recording, K670 is more suited. Not only the relative larger capsule which makes sound more engaged (therefore a bit more bass) but also the live monitoring headphone jack. Unnoticeable latency will come in useful for making music or voice-over.

    MY Fifine sounds better than my xlr mic on a mixer by a long shot. It doesn't pick up half the background noise and does it all for about what i paid for a xlr cord . Don't always think you have to pay a bunch for something that works.As for the drivers well mine has worked on 2 different pc's with no problems what so ever.But hey if your someone that puts more value in having a "pro" name on your mic than if it works just pass this one by because it's not for you.Oh yeah It also doesn't cause a ground loop problem and cause freaking audio issue's with a 2 pc stream setup.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  Před 5 lety

      "Don't always think you have to pay a bunch for something that works" - hence why the one I recommended was specifically based on it costing about the same price and being USB.
      Nothing I recommend or mention has "pro" in the name or has anything to do with that.
      And no, it can't cause a ground loop problem in a 2PC setup because you have no direct way of utilizing a USB mic in a dual PC setup in the first place, so that point is moot.

    Your explanation dynamic VS condenser doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean on a practical level, yeah, that's the kind of behaviour that you can expect, but you know it's technically bollocks, right?
    I mean what would happen if you mounted the dynamic capsule free standing in the middle of a thing, what do you think? OK you'd need some mighty gain, but you'd get the same kind of response to a condenser. Probably would need a bit of EQ, because the frequency sensitivity of dynamic membrane is not exactly equal across its area.
    On the other hand, what if you mounted a condenser the same way a dynamic capsule is? OK you'd get murderous handling noise and you'd quickly run into pressure limits, but otherwise, it would behave remarkably similar!
    And good luck that none of your hardware burned down
