Every time I need to leave this world for a bit I watch 'Grey Gardens' and hang out with these wonderfully eccentric woman for awhile. They are great company and I love Little Edie's giggle!
If it makes you feel any better to know, she eventually moved to Quebec for a time before her death, and was able to finally learn to speak French fluently. :) Love her.
She is not Nuts. Basically she is saying that her Relitives couldn't handle her eccentricity. She was brighter and had more personality than her family members, so they simply couldn't handle her because of that.
T Her mother and her obviously had a kind of codependent relationship but I think the main reason LE left the city was because of her Propecia. She was so beautiful and even did modeling, so to lose her eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair must have been very, very hard for her.
I've got to say, she was very naturally beautiul for a woman if her age, these days even celebs in there 40's after plastic surgery don't look as good as this! Her voice, her accent, mannerisums, and everything about little Edie was beautiful, and this film probably without her realising it made her famous than she would have ever been. The camera and her audience love her who can blame them. She's unique x
Adore Little Edie with all that magnetism and personality that is unmeasured. She was in the worst of living conditions and bound to her mother out of love and still she outshined the brightest star. What a woman!
I only discovered Greg Gardens a week ago, and I have watched it 4 times now. I just can't get enough. Little Edie has such a good heart. I just wish she was alive to see the appreciation.
from my understanding, after her mother died and she sold grey gardens.... her fans arranged for LE to perform at a night club in nyc..... the reviews were horrible, but her fans hid the reviews from her. they were real fans! so in a small way, she did become a star. then LE lived in florida and would do these glamour poses in public (cafe? beach?) people would whisper... "who is she? retired movie star? european royalty?" the answer.... Little Edie.
I feel like Little Edie had such a beautiful personality and heart, and if she'd had a chance to really show it and follow her dreams, she would have shone so bright. She seems so earnest and truthful to herself even though she's going through so much, and even though she had an unhealthy relationship with her mother that limited her in other parts of her life.
Little Edie was extremely smart! Oriental Philosophy was one of her majors in college! And she could read abd write in French. Probably couldn't speak it because of her severe Hamptons accent. Intelligent woman.
Princess Chewie it’s a very unique mix of old- school upper-class Long Island, mixed with the Mid-Atlantic accent which many finishing schools for ladies taught at the time as the appropriate way to speak in public. You hear this accent is many old movies, most notably from starlets like Katherine Hepburn. Not surprisingly, Jackie Kennedy had a very similar accent, albeit much less exaggerated, as she went to the same types of finishing schools as Little Edie.
@@jonathanl9229 they still teach this "Mid-Atlantic accent" in theater schools today. I wonder if they teach it at any finishing schools today. Lana Del Ray speaks like this at times, especially when reading her poetry. I don't know if it's because she likes the "50's dreamgirl gothic" persona or if it's from her own upper crust NY background.
she definitely has a high IQ just never grew up cuz she was spoiled that happens to a lot of people my family so I can relate it is what it is what a great movie thank you to the maysles brothers
She and her mom were severely depressed. Their story is tragic. But she's such a sweetheart. There's not a bad bone in her body. They were dealt some bad cards in life and had no choice but to play those cards until the day they died.
That's what the Beals wanted. they were living for being filmed. This clip makes me so happy for some reason tbh. Little Edie Beals is my patron saint.
It is actually an incredibly valuable antique Tiffany brooch!! It came out later they made ends meet selling their Tiffany collection off piece by piece
Anyone who is even HALF interested in Grey Gardens..Purchase the box set if you can. 2 documentaries.. I have owned mine for 6 yrs. Really worth the ",investment"..
I absolutely adore these magnificent women, there is a little bit of them in every women whether we like it or not! So go ahead ladies, be a STAUNCH CHARACTER!
I love little eddie..a ray of sunshine in a dark cloud.she woulda been my best friend..years took their toll..but she stood strong..an proud..I admire her.
she was a old galpal of Big Edie's, who occasionally visited - apparently she wouldn't allow herself to be filmed. that's what the film makers said in the Director's Commentary on the GG dvd.
English literature Oriental philosophies and years of French.. what a girl j'adore the way she strays off into her mind when talking about the french such beautiful intonation... love love love! Beautifully observed a good choice, thanks!
I remember seeing a pic of Edie not long after her Mother had passed away in Studio 54, with a top on which she was wearing upside down! but that was her quirky dress sense, she's fascinating.
When my back is up against the wall of Life, I summon Little Edie to my shoulder and she repeats 0:20-0:52 to me again and again and again. She even includes the finger jesture and the head towel pulldown. The imagery really seems to work. I wouldn't have wanted to find myself on her bad side, that's one thing for certain.
Big edie never allowed little Edie to develop as a woman, she was always in control and little edie was never permitted to have a relationship with anyone else. Strange? Disfunctional?Bizarre? Yes, all of these, but, there was a unique love and bond that will never be understood by anyone else. I think they both knew they were trapped in something desperate and self defeating. Big and little Edie never knew how to take care of themselves in many ways, yet they maintained their diginity.
I love her comment on French! I am the same way I can read and write in it, but when it comes to speaking it I can raely make it through a conversation without a mistake!
I met Little Edie after her Reno Sweeny's Night Club Debut in 1977 Greenwich Village and set next her cousin Lee Bouvier Radswill -------yikes but she was very intelligent .
Love this woman, such a sad story. I didn't at first watching these snippets of the 1975 documentary. I thought, "what a nut", but learning about her life, I can see she was a victim of her domineering parents, and just tried to be free in her mind, when she wasn't allowed her freedom in her life.
yes! i LOVE it. LOVE IT! and i wonder: was she always a little odd i.e. mad, or did her mother make her so by living alone in that house with her for all those years? she utterly fascinates me. and her sense of fashion was DEAD ON, if you watch the rest of the documentary. brilliant woman.
she is the bomb.....and the first person i want to have a dirty martini with in heaven....and we can do the VMI marching "sawng" ....tagetha! !!!!!!!!!
Ohhhhhh thank you thank you thank you for posting this. I LOVE this rant of Edie's, and quote it on a nearly daily basis. Yes, I realize how lame that makes me sound.
her brothers Bouvier and Phelan inherited all the money and had successful careers and had to be shamed into paying the utilities by Jackie O, isn't that just horrible, knowing your mother and sister are freezing in the winter and not even a dime to help them, the rich are really just too much
They didn't inherit ALL the money. Their father, Phelan Beale, lost it during the stock market crash in 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression. Do some research.
So glad they existed before the internet. Being online would have destroyed their unique existence. Fascinating.
Absentee Childhood you’re wrong
They would absolutely have a reality show.

I know exactly what you mean. Watching Grey Gardens is so soothing, its like an escape.
Absolutely!
well put. 💫

I love this documentary. I have seen it about 6 times but never get bored. I love Little Edie, I would have loved to be her friend ❤️💕
IN DEALING WITH ME, THE RELATIVES DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY WERE DEALING WITH A STAUNCH CHARACTER.

Jiszelle N nah, she is batshit crazy.

She did once her mother died
she did a cabaret in new York late in life.It did not do that great but she seemed happy just to do it
She does shine.
All the Edies shine.
I adore Little Edie. I wish I would have met her at least once... : / RIP beautiful lady :)
It's a typical aristrocratic accent of old money families from the Northeast, particularly in New England.
"So I went and told some thing about the family" - hahahaha
AintThat SomeShit lmao
I love when she tugs on her head wrap by her ears
LOL! I love when she tugs down on her towel for emphasis! She's the best!!
So I went and told them stuff about the family...hahaha. God I love her.
