    Luxembourg middle-distance runner Josy Barthel put his country on the map and into the record books at the Olympic Games Helsinki 1952, creating a bit of a confusion for the local organizers..
    The most famous Olympic Records are presented in entertaining packages using recreations, animations and a mix of other visual methods: bit.do/EN-OTR

    How.... Why.... Did they forget the national anthem, it's so nice.

      They were not prepared for it! No one even had an inkling that a guy from Luxembourg could win,so the orchestra improvised a 'national anthem' on the spot.

    0:20 Actually I am very surprised that Canada won gold back then. Usually the USSR dominated ice hockey until the pros were allowed to compete.

      Well it was not yet the 1960 Olympics, before this the country was trying to establish its hockey team, everyone in USSR well the mostly Russian part played Bandy at the time a similar sport but enough different that the sports do not quite match up for very top level competition. Now Mostly all Russian's that are pro's play in a famous outdoor hockey league that most are from Russia.

    This was a highly controversial race both on the day and for decades afterwards. Josey Barthel's sudden improvement in performance so late in his career owed more than a little to the methamphetamines with which he had been experimenting. Of course the use of performance enhancing drugs was not illegal at that time (cf Harold Abrahams in the Paris Olympics 100m - coached by the notorious drugs specialist Sam Mussabini) though even then it was not really in the spirit of the sport.

      Is the drugs story true ?

    • @blanco7726
      @blanco7726 Před 3 lety +2

      It’s likely, but there’s no proof. Just like it’s likely for probably all the contestants in that race. In the 50s, athletes took these drugs like athletes today take an energy drink.
