Jimmy Page is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer who achieved international success as the guitarist and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin.
Page began his career as a studio session musician in London and, by the mid-1960s, alongside Big Jim Sullivan, was one of the most sought-after session guitarists in Britain. He was a member of the Yardbirds from 1966 to 1968. In late 1968, he founded Led Zeppelin.
Page is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time. Rolling Stone magazine has described Page as "the pontiff of power riffing" and ranked him number 3 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. I actually met him and had quite a long chat with him several years ago in a hotel in Spain. I was in awe - and he was so down-to-earth and amenable, a really natural guy. One of the most memorable moments of my life - he even autographed my Fender Strat. And no, Jimmy, I have not sold nor will ever sell that guitar.

He is a joy to watch play, but I am definitely biased. I did get to see Jeff Beck one on the "Loud Hailer" tour- and he was nothing less than fucking amazing. It's like the guitar is a part of his body, one white Strat the entire night, no effects, just his guitar, and amp.I was really fortunate to be there. You could tell there were a lot of guitar players in the audience the night I saw him, everyone's jaws were in their laps. It was inspiring. Cheers!

Jimmy has really changed since I saw him 43 years ago at The Checkerdome(arena) in St. Louis Mo! Lessons learned that night:
    1. He really is THAT good.
    2. John Paul Jones is the secret sauce behind Zep.
    3. Robert Plant was not only a phenomenal vocalist... he was a natural entertainer.
    4. John Bonham really liked whiskey. Bottle of Jack Daniel's next to his kit. Of course he killed on drums.
A night to remember for this then-17 yearold. 20th row center. These were my heroes.

No one really questioned his guitar playing abilities back then. That's more of a modern fallacy that he was only a good studio musician. Much of this is due to his style that may come across as "sloppy" in an age of post editing. To the point, modern music has become artificial and souless. I mean real talent isn't necessary scarce. It's just not welcome or even needed. Oh you can't sing? No problem. You don't play an instrument? No problem.

@@Justafeller Agreed! That's why my cover band is 'old school'. If there are four way vocal harmonies ... we sing four harmonies with NO harmonizers, backing tracks, etc. Same with all guitars and keys. No pace to hide. We, a band of four, took on 'Stairway' and 'Free Bird' last year because, as you are probably aware .... there is always that one guy that yells out "Play Stairway" or "Play Free Bird". Well we performed both last year and the crowds. went. wild. Now both are often on our set list. Few can believe that we would take these on-- especially in the vocal and guitar departments. Fortunately we have a gunslinger of a guitarist and a vocalist who does a very solid Robert Plant. All good. All fun. Keeping it real ... as best we can.

That was a fantastic speech, interview, and question answering session. I was a loyal fan in 1968 when they were viewed by the main stream media as too far on the fringe to be worthy of any notice. We were all young then. I bought the albums and went to the concerts. I loved it, absolutely loved it. It was a great time and a great band.

Thank you for posting this fascinating interview. Well first of all, what a special man and gentleman Mr. Page is. I was never a raving Led Zeppelin fan, but I just read Pete Townshend’s book, “Who I Am,” in which he writes about Jimmy Page, and I am currently reading Glyn Johns’ book, “Sound Man,” in which both authors highly praise Page’s expertise in music. And so I have been interested in how Mr. Page got started in music, his session playing (it seems he was the English session playing equivalent of Wrecking Crew’s Glen Campbell or Tommy Tedesco), and various stories about his career. I am one of those who thinks that his live solos in Stairway are about the best Guitar playing that’s ever been recorded. The reason for me is that when he plays live, I feel that I can hear the emotion and the life experience in is performances. Being that open to self expression is quite a human feat. He is just downright an impressive man.

I can find one case where he did have a (mutual consent) relationship with a 14-year old girl (Lori Maddox), so i do not understand why our pious Pope is using the plural here ("14 year old chicks"). And i also wonder if our pious Pope would have been so disciplined himself. Jimmy was 26 at that time and they just fell in love ... It can happen, and she actually appears to be quite adult, so think it is a gross exaggeration to call him "a paedophile" (Conan 1812). And why call Lori a "groupie tramp"? How can you speak in such a negative way about persons that you do not even know?

jsilence418: It is a totally different case, because there was no mutual consent and Spacey tried to rape the person involved. See: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/30/kevin-spacey-anthony-rapp-apologises-accused-sexual-advance-14-year-old-boy
"Anthony Rapp claimed he was left traumatised after Spacey lay on top of him during evening at actor’s apartment 31 years ago (...) He said Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk ... He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold."
The case of Jimmy Page and Lori Maddox was totally different. As Lori describes herself, they fell in love and had a relationship for three years with mutual consent.

The contrast between Jimmy's humble genius and the self-satisfied but stale Oxford host is stark. My friends were not out of our minds being so in love with Led Zeppelin as kids in the 70s and early 80s. It was always a special moment when we discovered the next album. These young people are just as absorbed with Led Zeppelin today as we ever were. Jimmy was disappointed when it ended. He could talk about his career forever and I could listen forever. Jimmy Page is a treasure. He dodged the subject of JPJ. Maybe I'd rather not know.

As for Jonesy, I think there is overall a huge mutual respect between him & Jimmy.
Incidents like the "he's out parking the cars" quote from Plant, as I understand it, were quite rare but OFC unfortunate. But then Plant has always had a snarky/sarcastic sense of humor, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised (let alone shocked) when we hear those types of stories.
