The more I listen to the Trade union leaders the greater my respect, the more I listen to the Mps the lower my respect sinks, these Mps have been chosen to sit on select committees presumably because they have some interest in protecting the interests of the general public, in other words they are supposed to carry out their duty of care to us.

Many of the unions are going to sell out the workers with pathetic pay 'deals' that will do nothing to halt the worst drop in living standards since the 1950s. It is not like this in many other countries. Government is to blame first and foremost but workers are ill served by many ineffective unions that are full of hot air and deliver little. The NEU may not reach the threshold for strike action, which speaks volumes about the lack of solidarity in education. Even if it does, it is advocating strike action which will end in a deal close to what the pay review body has recommended and the government has already accepted. The NEU issue is the fact government will not fund it in full which raises the prospect of redundancies in schools. But this is for the union to address not every single teacher it is leading into strike action that will achieve almost nothing in terms of pay.

A number of years ago I was heading home and noticed my bus was at the stop. I ran and just managed to jump onboard as the driver closed the door. Unfortunately the ‘driver only’ bus driver pulled away from the stop while closing the door on my foot. I was lying on the pavement with my foot caught in the door being dragged around 150 metres along the road frantically banging on the side of the bus while trying to avoid the wheel. As I was coming towards a traffic light I fully expected my life to end trapped between it and the bus or mangled beneath the tyres. I was fortunate that the passengers heard the banging and spotted me being dragged and stopped the bus. I consider myself to be very lucky to be alive and have always blamed the fact that there are no longer conductors on buses for that situation. I have no doubt whatsoever that driver only trains are inherently unsafe and that instead of a bruising if this had happened on a train without a guard I would not have survived. We should not in any circumstances give up safety of the public for company and shareholder greed.

"The idea is fundamentally unsafe, would lead to more r_pe, violence, and no help during various accidents."
"Ahh, OK, so is that a no then?"
    "obviously"
"hmm interesting, what about your views on driver only trains?"
    Next up:
"Do you think it's fair that my constituents should have to pay more for the pay increase of rail staff."
"I think that the increase of pay should be covered by reducing the dividends of shareholders"
"I don't think that answers my question"
That's because it's a leading question that is based on BS to try and play into a BS narrative. Unless of course his poor constituents are all shareholders. Unlikely. The question was answered perfectly adiquately, he just didn't like the answer because he came out looking like a moron.
And finally from Mr shark eyes:
    "how long can you last"
"we're in it for the long haul"
"no, but I want specifics. I want to know how long we need to hold your heads under the water to ensure you drown, so we can proceed with the next phase. We don't want to hold you under for longer than that because when the whole thing crumbles and people see the bodies we also want plausible deniability."
"we can sustain this for quite some time"
Mr shark eyes starts to look worried.

This idea that they are worth their wage and the drivers are not is abhorrant. Of course the problem is most of his constituents are on criminally low wages but that's not his fault is it? All he does is highlight other issues they've caused elsewhere as well! The Tories try to pit upper working class against lower middle class. And so what if the wage is higher than other people, the point is they are being asked to do the same work for less remuneration than last year and the year before . Following the MP argument you shouldn't have more money than anyone on minimum wage. Its not a like for like comparison. MPs are paid more than most of their constituents.

Ministry of Funny Walks was a dig at Civil Service mandarins. It was a time when Conservative Party was conservative in outlook - ie, they mostly wanted to conserve things as they had been for years and to resist change or to make sure it happened slowly. While that CP did include the likes of Enoch Powell, it also included Lord Carrington, Willie Whitelaw, and Edward Heath (the very opposite of a landed gentry type). Even the capitalists in that CP were more like Adam Smith than the modern form. They mostly were concerned for the less fortunate even if it was from a patronising attitude and a need to have healthy workers on their farms and factories. Didn't like them at the time but have to concede they were not all malicious, they could talk with 'lower classes' in unions and, indeed, the unions were strong till North Sea oil gave Thatcher the cash to smash them and transform the CP into a neoliberal, devil-take-the-hindmost rabid monster capitalism. Modern CP is not conservative in any way whatsoever so real conservatives have been squeezed out of the party. It has added something to Thatcherism in that they are firmly convinced that they have to add cruelty and jackbooting crushing of everyone who is not their chum. Modern CP is Alan B'Stard in power instead of merely being a fringe back-bencher in John Major's party. They are utterly incapable of negotiation because that type of mindset is completely absent from they way of functioning.

So why can your salary increase and your value is somehow reasonable but it's far fetched for a train drivers salary to increase in-line with inflation? • @ianfromnyc
      @ianfromnyc Před rokem +3

@Jazzmaster Jay If you knew anything about the railway, you would know that driverless mainline trains are not being produced anywhere. Even the DLR has a fully qualified driver (the Train Captain or whatever they're called these days) on board. The DLR also wouldn't pass a modern H&S risk assessment without platform edge doors on every station; it's grandfathered in under 1987 rules. It also operates entirely over tunnels and viaducts and at low speed.
You would also know that a "guard" on the railway is not the same as a security guard, it's a traditional title that goes back to the early days before the railways had signals, when trains needed a "guard" at the back who would show a red flag or torch to any approaching trains in case of a breakdown. The modern term for a guard is a "Conductor" or "Train Manager".
(On a side note, the BTP only have a handful of response units on duty in each region at any given time. Outside of the inner cities, their response time can often be measured in hours. You really expect them to deal with fare evaders and street harassers?)
To have automated trains in the UK, it would require billions of pounds of investment in track and signalling upgrades, and then the stations would all need to be rebuilt to pass health and safety risk assessments (unless the Tories scrap them, which wouldn't surprise me). Most of the UK doesn't even have computerised signals, and much of the country doesn't even have electric colour light signals yet.
