    Dumping my notes in here!
    Epee lacks Right of Way - Any touch causes a point, no matter if two touches land at the same time. Due to this, try to have as much control of the blade and have as many options as possible. When making an extension, keep arm in a high line in order to hit any possible area on the target. Do not let extended arm stay at shoulder length- will not give as much control.
    All sections of the body are on-target in Epee.
    - 3 principal attacks -
    ~Point-in-line, Lunge, Flesche
    Point in line - Upon opponents advance, extend arm (in a high line) and let them run into the tip. Advance, extend arm (In a high line) and make contact with a target.
    ~Lunge - Keep blade in high line. Apply force from back leg, kick forward with front leg, performing a lunge. Keep arm extended. Make sure your leg hits at the before or at same time the foot lands. Make sure knee directly above/slightly behind the foot. Do not lean past.
    ~Fleche - Running attack. Lean forward on front leg. Once the weight is tilting forward far enough (until you feel forward movement), cross over with back leg and propel self forward.
    The drills are done for 3 minutes & 30 seconds + break repeated. They are all essentially just repeating different attacks. The drills start at 7:25

    Can you explain why you extend the arm before moving forward when attacking?
    It seems that it would telegraph the attack, making it easier for the opponent do parry or counter.

    • @osmfencing
      @osmfencing  Před 3 lety +6

      In the context of the lesson, the action of extending the arm first is intended to reinforce muscle memory to make sure Beginners are able to start the action with the arm prior to moving the feet. Once the fencer progresses beyond that of a Beginner, they are able to combine the extension of the arm and that of the advance/lunge so that there is less telegraphing of the action. When it comes down to learning a new weapon, encouraging effective actions and movements slowly (even if it looks like its telegraphing) helps the fencer develop a smooth technique over time.
      In a general context of extending the arm first, this make the attack faster in that the point needs to travel a shorter distance to the target. In theory this means a parry could stop the attack but, when done correctly, the extension of the arm and the following lunge typically happen rapidly and close to the same time (stepping in/lunging with an arm that is yet to be extended or slowly extending gives your opponent that chance to hit you in preparation/time, essentially timing you out from making a valid hit yourself).

    Hey I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but I am very new to epee and fencing in general but when you lunge is your back foot supposed to stay planted with the entire sole of your foot on the ground or are you supposed to let your foot angle. The reason I am confused is because in the video they angle their foot but my coach told me that you need to keep the sole of your foot planted. I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to point out an error in the video because that is not what I am trying to do I just want to know what the proper technique is. Sorry for the long comment.

    • @osmfencing
      @osmfencing  Před 2 dny

      As a general rule, you would want to keep your foot flat to the ground as this will reduce the risk of rolling your ankle when recovering from the lunge. However, in cases of deep lunges, the foot will drag and roll.

    @bubbahottep8644 Před 2 lety +1

    I notice that the point lands before the rear foot does in the fléche, and often even before the front foot. Is this by plan, or do the constraints of the camera angles compel it? Thank you.

    • @osmfencing
      @osmfencing  Před 2 lety +1

      This is by design. A well-executed fléche should see the touch arrive as soon as the fencer pushes off with the front foot. In some cases, the touch arrives after the foot does, but this is generally due to the distance being too great.

    How does the point in line change with pistol vs French grip ? Thanks

    • @osmfencing
      @osmfencing  Před 3 lety +4

      When establishing line with a pistol grip, you typically experience greater control and stability over your weapon, especially should your opponent beat against your line.
      The French grip is balanced by its advantage and disadvantage while executing a line. If you are holding the grip further from the guard (pummeling), you are afforded greater reach, but this comes at the cost of greater control and stability over your weapon should your opponent successfully beat against your line. However, if you are holding the french grip conventionally with your hand further up the grip closer to the guard, it will essentially be the same as when using a pistol grip.
      In such situations, especially when using a French grip, where your opponent is acting against your blade, the best course of action is to attack. If they are acting against your blade as opposed to your target, you still have the initiative to complete your attack by either stepping in with your point-in-line, or transitioning into a lunge. This can be a direct action, or it could follow a disengagement.

And sabre was just a novelty to me! 😝 All I wanna do is just fence epee! I suck at the other two weapons!
