  • The Gloucester to Hereford canal looking at the restoration of the Gloucester canal basin. The canal was granted permission to be built in 1791 and work stsrted in 1793. It reached Newent in just two years in 1795, but didn't reach Ledbury until 1832. It was finally completed to Hereford in 1845 an was closed after a mere 36 years in operation. This was mainly due to the railways proving such a strong competitor being quicker cheaper in most cases and reliable. This was true of a great many canals of the period and in fact the railway companies bought a lot of the competing canals, filled them in and built their railways on top. This was the case for this canal and the canal suffered the indignity of being used for the transport of railway building materials in the early stages.
The plan for this canal is for a full restoration, and work has begun in various locations on small scale digging out, rebuilds and refurbishments although the task is immense. Somehow I don't think I shall be around with my trusty camera to record the grand reopening.
In the meantime I hope to try and film both the canal in its 'natural' state and restoration as it progresses.

Lovely! A very enjoyable walk. The Canal Trust have done a great job. Your historical information makes the walk even more interesting. The film is excellent. Than you.

I found an old map which indicated that the River Arrow East of Hereford - ever so twisty - was used as a through route to the Leominster Canal.

There remains quite a lot of the Hereford and Gloucester canal, even tunnels and buildings though as you said th railways filled in random parts to destroy the competition. At the moment I am contemplating purchase of a place called tunnel cottage with the canal and tunnel in the grounds as a deep water filled cutting. The water is a foot below the top of the tunnel roof and filled with algae

@@ParkinsonsWalks Sadly like many railways the original route has had so much interference I suspect it has no chance of recovery, Should I come to own such a property It would be fun to restore what was possible (it would make the area a lot safer too). Sounds like we are talking the same site, Tunnel Cottage. One advantage of Google Maps a lot of things can be identified from above. Being an ex Mission Planner from the RAF I enjoy gleaning information from satellite shots.

I don't think there are, but you would need to contact their HQ to find out. P.W.
