Does Concrete Explode When Heated?

- Concrete doesn't really burn but it can explode if heated to a high temperature. One cause of this explosive force is water trapped inside the concrete. If and when concrete is exposed to extremely high temperatures, like from a fire, that water heats up and the concrete can explode.
Concrete is porous and absorbs water readily; the water may evaporate quickly from the surface layers but the water trapped deep inside the concrete could take days or even weeks to dry completely leaving the concrete vulnerable if heated.
Concrete on its own is not suitable for high heat applications. When mixed with ingredients such as clay and lime (which enable the concrete to withstand hot temperatures) in the right proportions, concrete can be used for high heat applications such as fire pits, fire bowls, etc.

And yet another surprise from concrete. I'm so glad I'm learning the surprises by video exploration, rather than real life experimentation disasters.
Intresting
Great video, I had no idea concrete could explode. Several years ago I poured a little slab inside of our stone campfire ring because it would make it easier to clean the ashes out. Well, the last fire we had a small section exploded, chipping the top 1/4 inch of concrete in a small area of the pit. Can this concrete be sealed to prevent that from happening again or what advice do you have to prevent that from happening a second time.
So, what does one use for an outdoor fireplace
Moisture evaporates and can't get out.... I'm trying out , abandoned termites nest clay an perlite for a bit of fire proofing in my pizza oven dome,,, haven't lit it yet
What about these table top fire pits that people are making? Is there a danger with igniting alcohol or ethanol in a small reservoir within these "firepits"?
What do we use in place of concrete, bricks and rocks in the fireplace? Here in Asia we don't commonly get firebricks and high temperature cement. These days we see countless stoves and fireplace made our of concrete specially from Asian you tubers.
Hi Steve, thankyou so much for your brilliant knowledge. Was wondering how long I should wait to cure my vessels before I put wax into them. I was sealing them after 4 days with a very good sealer. My ratio is 1 cement to 2 sand and to 2 aggregate. Now the vessels are 3 and a half inches high and 4 inches inner diameter. What would you suggest to make them safer. Do you think I'm ok and safe with what I'm doing. Again thankyou for your brilliant advice in your videos. Bless your hands. 🙏
I tend to not do anything with concrete until it is cured. It acts unpredictably when still curing and retaining moisture. Some sealers might work like this, but many will blush and fail due to moisture still trapped within the piece. 30 days with the first 2 weeks underwater would be ideal.
@@creatingconcrete Thankyou again.
Can you do a video on making concrete weights? How to make the strongest version and most accurate weight?
This is one I have been planning to do. Stay tuned!
@@creatingconcrete Awesome! I most interested about the curing. In my mind after the concrete plates set I was just going to leave them in a bathtub of water for 28 days to pond cure? I have no idea! 😂
@@creatingconcrete ooh and if they were mixed with red, blue, yellow iron oxide those would look really nice! Like the Olympics.
@@coloradoretreats pick up a few 5 gallon buckets for wet curing. I am SUPER confident that taking your bathtub offline for a month is not the right move here!
Today same thing happened with us 😢
OH NO!
